Steam breaks concurrent player record as gamers stay indoors due to coronavirus outbreak

2

Yesterday evening, Steam brushed past 20 Million concurrent Steam users mark to settle at a new record high of 20,313,476 concurrent users. This new record is in tandem with people asked to self-quarantine themselves and work from home, due to which more and more people have turned towards gaming.

Steam has the biggest games library and offers hundreds if not thousands of free-2-play games. Steam is also home to various AAA games and leading developers. Currently, the game with most users on steam is CS:GO, which reached more than 1 Million concurrent players mark for the first time since its release in August 2012.

According to Steam Stats, more than 6.2 million players were in-game when steam breached 20 Million concurrent users mark. Although the record for the highest number of in-game players at a time still stands at more than 7 Million, a feat which was achieved in 2018 when PUBG was new to Steam. Going by the pattern we can expect this record to soon be broken and we might even see a new record of more than 8 Million players in-game.

Coronavirus is still at large and a worldwide emergency has been called upon by WHO. As more countries undergo lockdown and work from home becomes a norm, more people are expected to log-in into gaming to pass time and entertain themselves.

Coronavirus: F1 star turns to esports after Australian GP called off

0

This week FIA (Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile) responsible to hold F1 race events held a committee meeting and announced the cancelation of the March 15th Australian Grand Prix as well as Bahrain and Vietnam events been delayed due to ongoing coronavirus concerns.

This announcement was anticipated by many followers and stars alike, as the spread of Coronavirus is still at large and WHO has now announced World Emergency. Amid the turmoil of cancelation of events, many fans are left with nothing to follow other than recycling through the old content of their favorite sports.

Similarly, the Sports Stars are left with too much time to pass as their calendars are suddenly becoming empty. To fill the void, Veloce Esports organized “Not the AUS GP” virtual racing event. In the event, several real-life F1 pros came together and raced against Top Gamers. One such star, McLaren driver Lando Norris streamed his race and was shocked when 70K viewers switched to his stream leapfrogging him to Twitch’s top spot over huge names like Marcel ‘MontanaBlack88’ Eris and Felix ‘xQc’ Lengyel, as well as the RLCS and CSGO’s Flashpoint.

Jamie MacLaurin, founder of VeloceEsports told BBC Sport:

Esports is a very fast-growing and exciting industry and what we wanted to do this weekend is put on a fun race for fans that are without racing in Formula 1. We sat down together and thought people will be without a Formula 1 race and sport in general and they will be staying at home trying to avoid the coronavirus so where better to put on a race than online?”

“We got in touch with Lando and he was really interested.”

Several other stars also tuned in such as Lewis Hamilton, Stoffel Vandoorne and Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois.

Getting these stars onboard didn’t take much time for Jamie as everyone was free and were themselves looking for things to do amid the lockdown. Following Jamie’s footsteps, various other communities also came together and announced virtual tournaments.

Professional Cyclist Geraint Thomas, the winner of the 2018 Tour de France, hosted his own races with other stars, while Simon Yates with his twin brother Adam is organizing daily events with riders from Mitchelton–Scott men’s and women’s squads as well as other teams taking part.

Whereas for Football fans, Real Betis striker Borja Iglesias and Seville left-back Sergio Reguilon fought each other at Fifa 20 after the Sunday’s Seville football derby between Sevilla and Real Betis was postponed because of the coronavirus outbreak.

Valve Cancels Dota Pit Minor and Epicenter Major

Dota 2’s Epicenter Major has been called off by Valve amidst the ongoing COVID-19 Situation across the globe. With a plethora of events that have led to lockdowns, cancellation of events, Valve did decide to observe some safety measures like the cancellation of the Epicenter Major is recently followed by the ESL One Los Angeles Major who met the same fate.

Since past weeks, we have been coming across various events either getting called off or being held with no crowd. The latest incident we could throw some light on would be the Intel Extreme Masters Katowice 2020 where the event organizer was unable to get a nod from the Polish government for allowing the spectators to fill the Spodek Arena who were then forced to conduct the event crowd-less.

The cancellation of these DOTA 2 events might leave a great impact on the teams as they earn a specific set of points from the major which do help them to gain an invite for the annual event “The International” In addition to their Tweet, they added:

I appreciate the concern about the news. I am not arrested and I will not be arrested, much less the fugitive as they are spreading. It is a process of a problem in which my ex-husband had and harmed me, in which he has been solving according to the time. As soon as we parted, he took 100% responsibility. I work with my image, I do live broadcasts daily, I am known in my field, I have a physical address. It does not fit in with what is being judged out there…

shAy was a professional Counter-Strike player for 11 years and last played in Keyd Stars CSGO team before retiring from the competitive scene in May 2019. She has also worked with other Brazilian Esports organizations such as Mibr, ProGaming, paiN, Santos Dexterity, and Bootcamp. shAy also had a relationship with Fer, player of MIBR between 2017 and 2019 and is currently the girlfriend of Jean-Paul, goalkeeper of São Paulo.
