What Rockstar confirmed in June 2026
Rockstar announced GTA 6 pre-orders on June 24, 2026. The official pre-order announcement said the physical version would contain a download code inside the box and go on sale on November 12, 2026, one week before launch, to support pre-loading.

The Rockstar Support email that started the disc rumor
A few days after pre-orders opened, a Rockstar Support email began circulating online. It told a customer that the current pre-order was for the digital version and that a physical copy would be available “during the following months.”
Many fans read this as a sign that a disc version would follow the launch. The email did not use the word “disc,” and some outlets noted it may have been an automated reply.
Around the same time, Polish outlet PPE.pl reported that a disc version could ship in December 2026, about a month after launch. The report cited the leaker Graczdari, who had said in March that GTA 6 would not have a disc at launch.
Reports say the email was misread
On June 27, The Hollywood Reporter followed up on the rumor. Its sources said Rockstar had no plans to print GTA 6 discs.
According to Kotaku’s summary of that report, the sources said the email was real, but the “physical copy” it mentioned was the code-in-box version already announced. “The following months” referred to the months after the pre-order announcement, not the months after the November launch.
Rockstar itself has not made a public statement on the email.
What Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick has said
Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick has spoken about physical copies several times this year. His comments have sometimes been read as support for a disc, but they refer to the boxed product.

The early comments were later understood to mean the code-in-box version, which is a physical retail product without a disc.
On the August earnings call, Zelnick compared game discs to vinyl records. He said physical releases may still appear now and then, but not for large launches like GTA 6. He also pointed out that most games need an online connection and a download anyway.
Rockstar is selling a physical soundtrack, but not a game disc
In September, Rockstar announced a physical GTA 6 soundtrack on CD and vinyl. The game itself is still only available as a download, whether bought in a store or online. Rockstar has not linked the soundtrack release to any plans for a game disc.
How Sony’s 2028 disc decision affects GTA 6
On July 1, 2026, Sony announced that it will stop making discs for new PlayStation games from January 2028. The PlayStation Blog post said games released on disc before that date are not affected.
This means a GTA 6 disc for PS5 could technically still be produced before January 2028. Neither Rockstar nor Sony has announced one. GamingBible reported on September 24 that PlayStation is reportedly gathering feedback from studios and partners about the 2028 plan. Sony has not confirmed any change.
