Rockstar Games has confirmed that GTA 6 physical copies will not include a disc, sparking mixed reactions from the community. As players have come to expect from physical copies, GTA 6 moves away from the traditional approach and will not be providing a physical game disc.
According to Rockstar Games, the upcoming release of GTA 6 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S will include a redeemable code to download the game digitally, instead of featuring a physical disc. They are also planning to make boxed copies available from November 12, 2026, exactly a week ahead of the launch, which will let players preload the game and keep it downloaded for launch day.
This move has triggered mixed reactions among fans, especially the ones who were waiting to get their hands on a GTA 6 Physical Disc, who not only appreciated that a disc saves console storage, but also valued it as an important memento for collectors and fans alike, as many expected Rockstar to continue the tradition established by previous titles from Rockstar, which shipped with physical media and collectable content.
Speculations have surfaced that Rockstar’s move is motivated by the recent leaks, and having the game under close control would avoid any unwelcome troubles. This move prevents leaks and, at the same time, simplifies distribution, but only time can tell if there will be a disc version in the near future.
GTA 6’s standard edition is priced at $79.99, and the Ultimate Edition, priced at $99.99, will be available for pre-order and is expected to shatter all pre-order records that we have come to see from the gaming industry to this day, and this might be the reason for this code-based approach moving away from the disc-based one.
As anticipation continues to build, GTA 6 is expected to find its place as one of the biggest video game launches of the decade, and as the date for pre-order comes closer, we will find out how this decision impacts the game and whether they will stick to this strategy for future launches.
