CS2 Oct 28 Update Introduces Big Head Mode Along With LAR Files

CS2 Big Head Mode is now live in Casual after Valve released a 118 MB update on October 28, 2026. The patch also adds a Hold or Toggle option for silent reload and fixes a reload sound bug. Dataminers found files for a new weapon called LAR in the same update. Valve left Big Head Mode out of the patch notes, and the notes give no details on the LAR.

Below, you can read the full CS2 update patch notes, how Big Head Mode works, and what the files show about the LAR.

CS2 Big Head Mode and the October 28 Update

The patch notes list two gameplay changes and two miscellaneous fixes. The most visible change is not in the notes, though. It is CS2 Big Head Mode, a new mutator that runs in Casual.

In this mode, a player’s head size changes with every kill and every death. More kills make the head grow. More deaths make it shrink. The mode runs on the Casual Defusal Group Alpha maps.

Mutator is a new term in CS2. Big Head Mode is the active mutator for now. Valve teased future CS2 mutators that will affect gameplay.

The update also adds files for a new weapon called LAR. Thour shared its icon on X.

CS2 Update Patch Notes

Valve’s notes are split into Gameplay and Miscellaneous. Both gameplay changes target silent reload. The miscellaneous fixes cover AMD cards and demo playback. Big Head Mode does not appear in these notes.

Here are the official patch notes:

[ GAMEPLAY ]

  • Added an option to switch Silent Reload Mode between Hold and Toggle. With toggle enabled, once the silent reload starts you can let go of the reload button. To cancel a silent reload and go back to a fast reload, you can tap the reload button again.
  • Fixed various cases where the first sound of a reload was audible irrespective if a user requested a silent reload or not.

[ MISC ]

  • Fixed a bug where liquid could render as black on AMD video cards
  • Fixed some sound and UI bugs when rewinding during demo playback

CS2 Silent Reload Toggle Explained

Silent reload lets players reload without the usual loud sound. Valve added the feature in the Rush Hour update on September 22. Until now, it worked one way only. Players had to keep the reload button held to stay in silent mode.

Now players can switch to Toggle. With Toggle on, they can let go of the reload button once the silent reload starts. To cancel it and return to a fast reload, they tap the button again.

The update also fixes a sound problem. Before the patch, the first sound of a reload could still be heard even when a player asked for a silent reload.

CS2 LAR Weapon Files Found

The weapon first appeared in the files on September 22 under the name M14, alongside the Rush Hour update. Dataminers found its stats, including a $4,100 price, 115 base damage, a sniper scope, and 5 rounds in the magazine plus 5 in reserve.

After the October 28 update, dataminers Gabe Follower and aquaismissing found that Valve renamed the M14 to LAR. The files now include a model for the weapon. Dataminers also loaded the model into the game and confirmed animations and a HUD icon.

Leakers describe the LAR as a Winchester-style rifle that reloads one round at a time. Gabe Follower noted that the folder holding the material is named “do_not_ship”.

The September files described a scoped weapon. It is unclear whether the design changed with the name or whether the scope will come later.

What Is Next for the LAR and Mutators

Valve has not announced the LAR or given a release date. The September M14 files were not mentioned in the official patch notes either.

If Valve adds the weapon, it would be the first new gun in Counter-Strike since the MP5-SD in 2018.

For now, players can try Big Head Mode in Casual and the new silent reload Toggle option.
