In Nintendo’s 3rd quarter earnings the company revealed that the sales of Nintendo Switch Family were increasing yearly and this quarter alone 4.8 million units were sold, a year-on-year rise of over 50%.

The company recently launched a cheaper version of Switch named Nintendo Switch Lite which can be credited for increase in sales. Adding the current numbers with the past sale numbers, the Switch Family have sold more than 41.67 million units worldwide since its launch in 2017.

In the report Nintendo’s Chief Executive Shuntaro Furukawa said that the Lite was drawing both existing Switch owners who wanted a second or third device for the family and new users who didn’t want to pay $300 for a regular Switch.

The Switch family is on its way to overtake the SNES (Super Nintendo Entertainment System, 1990) which sold close to 49 million units in its lifetime. With the upcoming holiday season and availability of a cheaper version, the sales of the Switch family are expected to rise significantly and easily dethrone SNES.

Switch is a commercial success for the company, with the Switch selling faster than other handhelds of this generation and to keep the system attractive for potential customers the company also have plans to rework and release old games that are only available on old platforms such as 3DS.

Starting with the release of entries from the Pokémon franchise as soon as next month. Pokémon franchise is one of the most successful IP that Nintendo holds and releasing games of the series will help boost the sales of Switch family specially the Lite version.
