GTA 6 Switch 2 Port Is Up to Rockstar, Says Nintendo President

GTA 6 will skip Switch 2 at launch, and Nintendo of America president Devon Pritchard has made it clear that any future port sits with Rockstar Games and Take-Two Interactive. Asked about a Switch 2 version in a new interview with Variety, she said “that’s going to be a conversation for Take Two and Rockstar” and added that Nintendo had nothing to announce.

Short answer. No yes, no no.

That leaves Switch 2 as the only current console without Grand Theft Auto VI on November 19, 2026, two weeks after Nintendo’s own big holiday bet arrives. Below is what Pritchard said, what Take-Two has said before, which rumors have come and gone, and what Rockstar’s history on Nintendo hardware tells us about the odds.

What Nintendo of America’s President Said About GTA 6 on Switch 2

Pritchard deflected the question to the game’s owners. She neither confirmed nor ruled out a port, and her answer matches how platform holders normally talk about third-party releases: the publisher decides where its game ships, and the console maker announces nothing on its behalf.

The GTA 6 question was one part of a wider Variety conversation that also covered Nintendo’s Zelda plans for the holidays. For Switch 2 owners hoping for a surprise, the takeaway is simple. Nintendo has nothing lined up that it is allowed to talk about.

GTA 6 Release Date and Confirmed Platforms

Rockstar’s launch lineup has not changed since the game was moved to November 2026, and no Nintendo or PC version appears on it.

Nintendo’s November Has Zelda Instead of Vice City

Nintendo is countering with a remake. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time launches on November 5, 2026 as a Switch 2 exclusive, and a Zelda 40th Anniversary Edition Switch 2 console lands a week earlier on October 29.

The hardware base is large enough to make a port tempting on paper. Nintendo’s own figures put Switch 2 at 23.68 million units shipped as of June 30, 2026, and the company kept its forecast of 16.5 million more consoles for the fiscal year ending March 2027. That forecast now has to survive a Switch 2 price increase and a holiday where GTA 6 will pull a lot of money toward PlayStation and Xbox.

Take-Two Has Kept the Switch 2 Door Open Since 2025

Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick said back in February 2025, months before Switch 2 launched, that the company fully expected to support Nintendo’s new console. He also said Take-Two had backed Nintendo hardware “when it made sense for the individual release”, and he named no specific games.

Rockstar has acted on that. The original Red Dead Redemption arrived on Switch 2 on December 2, 2025, with 60fps, HDR and DLSS support according to Rockstar’s announcement. GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2 still have no Switch 2 versions, which makes a jump straight to GTA 6 look like the long way round.

GTA 6 Switch 2 Rumors: What Insiders Have Claimed

None of the claims below came from Rockstar, Take-Two or Nintendo, and so far none has turned into an announcement.

Hartvick’s argument is the one worth sitting with. He told Kiwi Talkz that GTA fans tend to buy whatever machine the game runs on, so a weaker Switch 2 build carries real risk for limited gain. He still called the idea possible, and floated streaming as an easier route.

Can Nintendo Switch 2 Run GTA 6?

Nobody outside Rockstar knows yet. Switch 2 runs on a custom Nvidia chip with DLSS upscaling, which is how Rockstar got Red Dead Redemption to 60fps on it. GTA 6 is a far heavier game, though. Even the PS5 and Xbox Series builds are reportedly targeting 30fps on consoles at launch, and the dense crowds and traffic in the latest 25-minute gameplay leak show how much the CPU has to juggle.

The Xbox Series S is the hopeful part. Rockstar already has to ship a scaled-down version for that weaker console, and that work gives any future handheld port a starting point.

Rockstar on Nintendo Hardware: A History of Late Ports

Rockstar’s big open-world games usually reach Nintendo years after launch, if they get there at all, and outside studios handle the work.

GameFirst releaseNintendo release
GTA 6November 2026None announced
Red Dead RedemptionMay 2010Switch in August 2023, Switch 2 in December 2025

Red Dead Redemption 2October 2018Not released
GTA 5September 2013Not released
L.A. NoireMay 2011Switch in November 2017

GTA 5 took 19 months to go from console to PC. GTA 6 has no PC date at all. If a Switch 2 version ever happens, it would most likely follow the PC release, and Take-Two’s quarterly earnings calls are where the first real hint would surface.

Until then, Switch 2 owners who want Rockstar’s open worlds have Red Dead Redemption natively and the GTA Trilogy through backward compatibility.
