GTA 6 will be capped at 30 FPS on consoles at launch, according to a new report. Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson reportedly told YouTuber Davy Jones that the game is currently running at 30 FPS on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S during development. The update follows the GTA 6 Extended Look premiere on Netflix. Nelson also said the studio has not decided whether a 60 FPS performance mode will arrive at launch or later.
Here is everything revealed so far about GTA 6’s console performance target.
What Rob Nelson Said on GTA 6 30 FPS Lock
Davy Jones, a Brazilian content creator associated with Flow Games, was among a small group invited to visit Rockstar North in Edinburgh. During the visit, he spoke directly with Rob Nelson, the studio’s lead developer and co-director.
Nelson reportedly said that during this stage of development, consoles are running GTA 6 at 30 frames per second. He added that the team still needs to consult with technical staff to determine if a 60 FPS option will be available at launch or added later.
Nelson also said he could not yet share details on resolution or other technical features, including ray tracing.
The revelation lines up with the gameplay shown during the GTA 6 Extended Look on Netflix, a roughly 27-minute segment captured on a base PS5 that ran without visible frame drops.
No Word Yet on PS5 Pro or 60 FPS Mode
It is still unclear whether the PS5 Pro, currently the most powerful console on the market, will run GTA 6 at 60 FPS at launch or in a future update. Nelson did not commit to specifics for the Pro model.
Rockstar has a history of launching open-world titles at 30 FPS before adding higher frame rate options later. GTA 5 did not get a 60 FPS mode until its next-gen upgrade on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. Red Dead Redemption 2 still has no official 60 FPS patch on current consoles.
GTA 6 Release Date and Platforms
GTA 6 is set to release on November 19, 2026, for PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. A PC version has not been announced and is expected to arrive later, following Rockstar’s pattern with GTA 5, which took close to 18 months to reach PC after its console release.
The 30 FPS cap applies to consoles only and would not affect any future PC release. Rockstar has not issued an official statement on GTA 6’s console performance modes as of this writing.
