Valve Encrypts CS2 Demo Chat After Player Messages Leaked

CS2 chat encryption is now live after Valve released a new Counter-Strike 2 update on September 9, 2026. The patch encrypts in-game chat stored inside demo files, using the same rules Valve already applies in CS:GO. According to the official patch notes, chat is now encrypted in demo files using the same rules as CS:GO, and team chat is no longer readable when playing back demo files. Global chat is only readable in demo files when played back through the in-game watch UI. Before this patch, demo files stored chat as plain text. Anyone with the right tool could pull messages out of a public demo without loading the game at all, since demos already recorded a full transcript of in-game chat alongside movement and shot data. Why Valve Encrypted CS2 Demo Chat The update follows weeks of controversy over cstracker.gg, a third-party CS2 stats site. The site builds public profiles using data collected from Counter-Strike matches, and those profiles can include a dedicated chat history pulled from tracked games. Cstracker.gg says the data comes from publicly available Steam information combined with processed CS2 match demos. Players discovered the feature in late August. The discovery spread across the CS2 community on August 27, after a Reddit post warned that everything a player had ever typed in text chat was now public information. One indexed profile reportedly held more than 2,800 messages across 388 matches. Players did not need a cstracker.gg account for their messages to appear, and several streamers and pro players found their own logs circulating online. We previously reported on the exposure when it first went viral. Cstracker.gg has said players can request removal, correction, or restriction of their profile data through its privacy contact, and Valve's own demo files expire after roughly 30 days. That did not stop the archive from growing, since the site kept whatever chat data it had already scraped. Other Changes in the September 9 CS2 Update The patch was not limited to chat privacy. On the map side, Valve fixed various gaps on Cache, fixed a wallbang spot on B site, added a missing competitive CT spawn point, and added additional T spawn points. Valve also reworked map scripting tools. The CSPlayerCamera system was renamed to CustomPlayerCamera, with new GetPlayer, GetMode, SetMode, and SetFollowConfig functions, while IsEnabled, SetEnabled, and SetIsControllingAngles were deprecated. Valve also added an "observable" property to custom_hud_layout that controls whether an observer sees the UI as the spectated player sees it. What This Means for Players and Third-Party Tools Services that previously extracted chat logs from raw demos will no longer be able to read encrypted team messages the same way, unless Valve exposes an authorized method for doing so. Tools built around replay analysis or match-history tracking may need to adjust how they process demos recorded after September 9.
