Steam’s response to Christmas Attack on servers and the caching issue

0

When we reported about how Steam users were severely affected by Steam caching error, there was a very less sign of any external attacks but now, as being reported and confirmed by Steam support themselves. Steam’s response to Christmas attack have left many in curiosity. As it is easy to bring down such a huge corporation by a channeled and series of DDoS attacks.

Below you can find complete statement from Steam regarding the DDoS attack and how it affected the transactions.

What happened

On December 25th, a configuration error resulted in some users seeing Steam Store pages generated for other users. Between 11:50 PST and 13:20 PST store page requests for about 34k users, which contained sensitive personal information, may have been returned and seen by other users.

The content of these requests varied by page, but some pages included a Steam user’s billing address, the last four digits of their Steam Guard phone number, their purchase history, the last two digits of their credit card number, and/or their email address. These cached requests did not include full credit card numbers, user passwords, or enough data to allow logging in as or completing a transaction as another user.

If you did not browse a Steam Store page with your personal information (such as your account page or a checkout page) in this time frame, that information could not have been shown to another user.

Valve is currently working with our web caching partner to identify users whose information was served to other users, and will be contacting those affected once they have been identified. As no unauthorized actions were allowed on accounts beyond the viewing of cached page information, no additional action is required by users.

How it happened

Early Christmas morning (Pacific Standard Time), the Steam Store was the target of a DoS attack which prevented the serving of store pages to users. Attacks against the Steam Store, and Steam in general, are a regular occurrence that Valve handles both directly and with the help of partner companies, and typically do not impact Steam users. During the Christmas attack, traffic to the Steam store increased 2000% over the average traffic during the Steam Sale.

In response to this specific attack, caching rules managed by a Steam web caching partner were deployed in order to both minimize the impact on Steam Store servers and continue to route legitimate user traffic. During the second wave of this attack, a second caching configuration was deployed that incorrectly cached web traffic for authenticated users. This configuration error resulted in some users seeing Steam Store responses which were generated for other users. Incorrect Store responses varied from users seeing the front page of the Store displayed in the wrong language, to seeing the account page of another user.

Once this error was identified, the Steam Store was shut down and a new caching configuration was deployed. The Steam Store remained down until we had reviewed all caching configurations, and we received confirmation that the latest configurations had been deployed to all partner servers and that all cached data on edge servers had been purged.

We will continue to work with our web caching partner to identify affected users and to improve the process used to set caching rules going forward. We apologize to everyone whose personal information was exposed by this error, and for interruption of Steam Store service.

GoodGamer brings charity to Steam for a cause

0

Most gamers spend a decent amount of money on skins, pets, and hats, so wouldn’t it be great if we can also do something good while we are at it? GoodGamer is a new initiative that strives to help the most effective charities in the world through in-game micro purchases. You’d get to choose how much to donate and to which charities which are divided in four different categories – poverty, animals and climate change, meta-charities, and far-future and research.

GoodGamer’s idea is to approach Valve’s managing director Gabe Newell and convince him to implement the possibility for developers and modders to sell charity items in the recently introduced item shops on steam. To do that however they need gamers’ support so make sure to spread the word by liking their page and telling all your friends about it.

NiP roster 2016 is promising

With the new year settling things for new rosters and organizations. Ninjas in Pyjamas decided a new way to pick things up for the upcoming year. NiP roster 2016 is being announced in a very unique format and till today they have managed to make the most in anticipating their fans with happiness and some with, disappointment.

NiP roster 2016

Following the announcement of pyth as their fourth player, NiP has taken a huge unavoidable risk of trading a world-class player like allu with a semi-professional tier 2 player. It is a very ambitious project to deal with as far as the recruitment at NiP is concerned, pyth as a player can be a good aimer or an unsung clutcher, but by taking him for granted and expecting that he’d take down the horses against the first-class experienced players at first go, sounds vague.

NiP roster 2016 now has;

  • friberg
  • Xizt
  • f0rest
  • pyth
  • Get_Right

The fifth player is expected to be Get_Right if everything else remain constant, though there are numerous possibilities if they would trade Gtr for someone else or Gtr himself would feel a need to pass by the ambitious roster would be the question. The Swedish rival, fnatic also recently announced that they’d stick to their current roster for the coming year and would not be experimenting any sort of changes just after the departure of the former IGL pronax from the team.

NiP and its players has been struggling past 2014 in making their way to top the scenario after being knocked down by all of the top teams and failing to beat any of them with severe impacts at the majors. The team, which made a historical run with title of undisputed champions for the longest period in the game are now contesting to test new players every season and this year, supposedly pyth is their branch out for 2016.

Ex-Skyred CSGO is now 24/7 Esports

Skyred CSGO former lineup has now been acquired by 24/7 Esports, the organization announced Sunday.

“This has been a huge undertaking and we as an organisation are looking forward to working with the team for the next year,” said 24/7 Esports’ owner Wei-Ning Yong in the announcement. “The team is easy to work with and hungry for success and this lines up perfectly with our expectations of the team”, he added.

24/7 Esports’ CS:GO roster is as follows:

  • Vu “cLb” Hoang Nguyen
  • Cong “crazyguy” Anh Ngo
  • Hoang “d@rklord” Giang Phung
  • Phu “Rap” Quoc Phan
  • Ngoc “Zac” Thien Nguyen

Skyred’s former lineup first made their major international appearance during DreamHack Open Stockholm where the team played Titan and Vexed Gaming.

At the event, crazyguy unexpectedly made a name for himself as a incredibly deadly AWPer after several incredibly impactful rounds with the Sniper.

Fnatic stays strong on the current roster for 2016

1

Jesper ”JW” Wecksell, of fnatic, took to Twitter to announce the roster for the Swedish powerhouse going into 2016. There have been no changes made and the Swedes will be going into 2016 with the same five players as seen at the end of 2015. It will no doubt be interesting to see how the team develops in 2016, after a fairly significant roster change that saw in-game leader, Markus ”pronax” Wallsten leave the team, replaced by former G2 eSports representative, Dennis ”dennis” Edman.

And fnatic’s strongest multi-national rival NiP are taking different ways to announce the release of the newest roster. As of now they announced 2016 roster starting with friberg as their first player.

Steam user-base glitch reported this morning, thousands of accounts affected

0

Steam reported a general cache error earlier this morning where users were able to see through account details of random users. Personal account data and activity was been visible, no intellectual loss or data compromising has been revealed as of yet.

Positively, no falsified purchases or fraud has been made as the transaction page would alert users with, “You can’t do this transaction on this account”. And making matters much settled, an official Steam representative also responded on the matter and confirmed of re-arrangements being processed.

Steam is back up and running without any known issues. As a result of a configuration change earlier today, a caching issue allowed some users to randomly see pages generated for other users for a period of less than an hour. This issue has since been resolved. We believe no unauthorized actions were allowed on accounts beyond the viewing of cached page information and no additional action is required by users.

Earlier this year, Steam faced a major market glitch where tons of user accounts and transactions were made at unbelievable prices and the moderators tried their best to roll-back the transactions for that current period. But, we are happy that this cache error wasn’t a part of the threatening done by LizardSquad or PhantomSquad who announced that they’d take down the entire PSN and Xbox Live networks on Christmas. Ironically, Steam faced a hour down-time on the Christmas evening.

Man Sues Bethesda Over ‘Fallout 4’ Addiction

0

Sighs … If you lost your “health, job and wife” after a only a three week Fallout 4 bender, you were probably on the verge of losing all those things already. If he wins, Bethesda should be ordered to pay him in caps. Man sues Bethesda over financial and personal life losses.

fallout_4_63529

There’s little doubt that Fallout 4’s gameplay is involving when you can spend dozens of hours on the main storyline alone. However, one Russian man is convinced that it’s too involving. RT says that he’s suing Bethesda for 500,000 rubles ($7,030) for failing to warn that Fallout 4 would “become so addictive.” Supposedly, the man went on a 3-week gaming marathon that cost him his health, job and wife. Had he known how alluring it was, he says, he would have either waited until the holidays to buy the game or avoided it entirely. We’ve reached out to Bethesda to both confirm the lawsuit and get its take on the claims.

There is a history of these cases, and they can even be successful: one American got compensation from NCSoft after he got hooked on Lineage II. There’s also evidence to suggest that certain kinds of gameplay can promote addictive behavior. With that said, there are many Fallout 4 players who’ve played extensively without ruining their personal and professional lives. This man will have to convince the court that he was genuinely addicted, not just lacking in self-discipline. And if he wins the case, Bethesda is bound to pack him back.

Spiidi replaces gob b in mousesports

PENTA Sport’s Timo “Spiidi” Richter has replaced Fatih “gob b” Dayik on mousesports’ Counter-Strike listing.

Although no reason was given for gob b’s removal, Mouz declared that “all four starting players decided to continue without their team captain.”

Spiddi

The modification sets mousesports’ beginning listing as follows:

Chris “chrisJ” de Jong
Denis “denis” Howell
Johannes “nex’ Maget
Nikola “NiKo” Kovač
Timo “Spiidi” Richter

Since the contract with mousesports in Gregorian calendar month, gob b has been below serious criticism for his poor performance despite being well-known as a powerful in-game leader.

Even though he was replaced previously, Spiidi is one among the foremost proficient German players within the scene and might be thought-about AN upgrade to gob b in military capability.
