ESL One New York 2019: What To Expect

The biggest CSGO tournament since Berlin Major is set to start from Thursday at Barclays Center (New York), where 8 teams will fight for a share in $200,000 prize pool. The event will also see a showmatch played on the reworked version of Cache, making it the first-ever live match of the new de_cache.

All the teams are divided into two groups of four, with Group A having Liquid, Ence, G2, and eUnited whereas Group B will feature Astralis, NRG, Faze and Optic. Every single match will be a BO3, with the exception of finals which will be played in a BO5 fashion.

This event will witness the race to No.1 as Liquid and their arch-rivals, Astralis look to grab the trophy and solidify their position in the Intel Grand Slam run.

While Liquid is still the World No. 1 in both ESL CSGO rankings and HLTV rankings, there lies a big question mark on their performance considering their recent results, post player break. Liquid lost to Astralis in Quarter-finals of the Major in a disappointing 0-2 fashion, also losing BO1โ€™s against NRG and Avangar in the Legends Stage. The top-ranked team moreover failed to win the ECS Week 1 NA recently, dropping off to Sharks in the semi-finals. The players have also accepted in multiple interviews that their individual form has taken a dent post player break. The liquid will hence have the opportunity to cement their place at the top with the proviso that they come out on top winning the event.

With that being said, they have to surpass their toughest opponent Astralis.

The four-time major winners will be top favorites to take the trophy as they recently concluded the Starladder major as Champions without dropping a single map in play-offs. Astralis, who won the first season of Intel Grand Slam winner, will also be looking to raise their tally from the duck in its third season to level up with liquid sitting at the top with one point (as they won IEM Chicago).

The tournament will also feature World No.4 NRG, who had an unbeaten run in Major until the semi-finals where they fell short to Astralis. They continued their good form post Major as well as winning the ECS (NA) week 1 qualifying for the main event. Their first match-up will be against Faze, who are yet to announce their fifth player. Multiple reports have already confirmed that coldzera is set to join the squad in their first match tomorrow. A couple of photos have surfaced on the internet courtesy the social media of players showing Faze CSGO Coach Janko โ€˜YNKโ€™ Paunoviฤ‡ and coldzera supposedly eating at the same restaurant and coldzera clicking pictures of the Faze members. Coldzera also took part in a local Lan in Serbia with Ynk and Niko and was reportedly in Poland where Faze also boot camped for the event.

Faze is yet to win a big tournament in 2019, with their only wins coming from Blast Pro Miami and Eleague Invitational. This event will also mark the first big LAN tournament for the young Latvian, Helvijs โ€˜brokyโ€™ Saukants . The latest addition to Faze has been in the eyes of the TOs since he joined Epsilon Esports in 2019 and helped the team win ESEA Season 30 Premier Division followed by an impressive run in Charleroi Esports 2019, with an impressive victory over G2.

The addition of Coldzera, post-NEOโ€™s trial also suggests Niko moving to the IGL role with secondary AWP role circulating between Niko and Coldzera. It’d be interesting to see how Faze performs in the upcoming events with this enhanced firepower.

Another team playing with a stand-in is G2.  Fabien “kioShiMa” Fiey will be stepping-in for G2 in this event. This will be his first LAN tournament since he left Cloud9 following the Katowice Major.G2 have already played IEM Beijing online qualifier with kioShima where they lost to forze in semis.

ENCE will also be joining Liquid and G2 in Group A. ENCE recently benched AlekshiB adding former mousesports player, Miikka โ€˜suNnyโ€™ Kemppi, who is also the only defending champion of ESL One NY. While their recent performances havenโ€™t been great (5th place finish Blast Pro Moscow and 5-8th in Starladder Major), ENCE will be looking to at least make it to the playoffs under their IGL and AWPer allu.

The other local team eUnited, also in Group A, recently added Ryan โ€˜freakazoidโ€™ Abadi after  Kaleb โ€˜mooseโ€™ Jayne requested to benched himself. Although their chances of winning the event are very bleak, they will be hoping to get past the Groups Stage. Another team from  Denmark which will be joining Astralis in Group B, is Optic. They are yet to post a LAN victory since the addition of Renรฉ โ€™cajunbโ€™ Borg. It will be a great opportunity for the Optic line-up to gain some experience against Tier-1 teams.

G2 set to sign huNter-, nexa

It seems the rumours have picked up pace after all and that Carlos ‘ocelote’ Rodriguez will finally have his way. There were reports earlier of the owner trying to poach Serbian duo Nemanja ‘huNter-‘ Kovac and Nemanja ‘nexa’ Isakovic from CR4ZY, something that was confirmed by the CEO of the organisation.

According to French journalist neLendirekt, G2 Esports are set to sign huNter- and nexa. The Serbian duo will replace Richard ‘shox’ Papillon, who is reported to be joining Vitality, and Lucas ‘Lucky’ Chastang, who will allegedly be the other player departing the G2 roster.

The financial terms of the reported move are yet to be revealed. But, it would be a huge blow to the CR4ZY organisation, who have recently managed to make a splash in the CSGO scene with their current roster. nexa will reportedly be the new IGL for G2.

If the move does see the light of the day, it would see a transition away from an entirely French roster for G2. While the arrival of two individually adept players in the form of huNter- and nexa will definitely boost the organisation’s firepower, it will be interesting to see what changes it will bring within the roster, especially in terms of the language used for communication.

Report: Evil Geniuses acquire NRG’s CSGO lineup

Reports are circulating all over the internet about Evil Geniuses lining up a move for picking up NRG’s CS:GO lineup ahead of ESL One New York.

The information came to light on Wednesday, following a report given by Jarek โ€œDeKayโ€ Lewis. According to him, “the talks between the parties are already advanced”.

NRG’s next tournament will be ESL One New York 2019, Sep 26-29. Even with such a close date, the deal can still be sealed today and the team plays as EG instead of NRG.

If the deal goes through, it will be Evil Geniuses’ first foray into CS:GO. They’ve competed in Counter-Strike: 1.6 and its biggest player was Jordan โ€œn0thingโ€ Gilbert, who played for EG for almost four years until 2012.

This move would make another traditional esports organization join the CSGO esports scene.

coldzera joins FaZe

FaZe Clan has finally announced the signing of Coldzera which at this point seemed imminent.

Coldzera is set to start for FaZe in their upcoming LAN in ESL ONE New York. This was no surprise considering the fact that FaZe blatantly failed to keep this signing a secret as we saw NiKo mingling with Cold all over social media, hanging out together, Cold moving to Europe to practice during his bench spell.

Coldzera is a support player and has often had his moments with the AWP, he is expected to fit right in the support role or might play as an AWPer provided FaZe chose a hybrid map based awping style. FaZe clan as of now has 4/5 Players who are proficient with the AWP. Cold for the most part of his career has spent his time with Brazilian squads like Luminosity, SK Gaming and lately MIBR. Things went south with the later which resulted in him getting benched. Cold has since been linked with FaZe and after a disastrous major by their standards, Cold was much closer to join them.

FaZe Clan are Now

  • Nikola โ€œNiKoโ€ Kovacs
  • Hรฅvard โ€œrainโ€ Nygaard
  • Olof โ€œolofmeisterโ€ Kajbjer
  • Helvijs โ€œbrokyโ€ Saukants
  • Marcelo โ€œcoldzeraโ€ David

Coldzera is quite a decorated player with 2 Major MVP attached to his name and winning both Majors as well. He was ranked as the best player in 2016 by HLTV. Cold has been consistent on both LAN and Online events as will likely replicate that for FaZe.

TYLOO completes IEM Beijing team list

After winning 3-2 in the Asia closed Qualifier, TYLOO becomes the last team to enter into the participant’s list for the tournament.

TYLOO took Greater china qualifier and Asian closed Qualifier both to qualify for the Beijing LAN event. The team faced a loss in the Greater china qualifiers 0-2 against Invictus in the Consolidation final and had to fight in for the slot in the Asian qualifiers thereafter.

In this qualifier, they had a strong upper bracket run with beating teams like BOOT, Mazaalai, and Lucid Dream to play the Grand Final best-of-five series with one map advantage because of being in the upper bracket.

The Grand final was against Invictus and was a perfect chance to take revenge of their previous loss against them. The series took all four maps and TYLOO lost the opening two matches, on Overpass (10-16) and Mirage (13-16). The Chinese organisation won the next match pretty convincingly on Dust2 with a score-line of 16-7 and map scored was tied 2-2. The last map train was hard fought by both the teams which concluded in the victory of TYLOO in overtime with a score-line of 19-16 and booked themselves a slot in the Grand event.

TYLOO finalize the list of teams for the Intel Extreme Masters Beijing, 2019 which will happen from November 7-10 and will feature worldโ€™s best teams for the lionโ€™s share of $250,000 and point for Intel Grand Slam season 3.

Finalized team list attending the event:

  • Liquid
  • Astralis
  • NRG
  • mousesports
  • FaZe
  • Vitality
  • ViCi Gaming (Greater China qualifier)
  • TYLOO (Asia Closed qualifier)

Hellraisers builds a team around ALOHADANCE and Miposhka

After two years of absence from the Dota 2 competitive scene, CIS organization Hellraisers finally decide to continue their competitive journey once again along with CIS star player Ilya “ALOHADANCE” Korobkin.

Hellraisers was considered one of the best teams back in 2014 when they had a full Ukrainian stack. But it all started to crumble, later on, jumping forward to 2016 they decided to stop their Dota 2 venture.

With Alohadance wanting to jump-start his competitive career again, HR decided to sign him up and build a team around him.

ALOHADANCE is a well-known player in the CIS Dota 2 community. He decided to take a break in order to become a full-time streamer, but unfortunately, he got banned from twitch.

Despite the ban, Alohadance managed to build a formidable reputation for himself. He used to play a safe lane for Team Empire back then.

Hellraisers look solid with this new lineup:

  • Ilya โ€œALOHADANCEโ€ Korobkin
  • Yaroslav โ€œMiposhkaโ€ Naidenov
  • Dmitry โ€œDMโ€ Dorokhin
  • Alexander โ€œNixโ€ Levin
  • Alik โ€œV-Tuneโ€ Vorobej

Fortnite surpasses CSGO in esports earnings

According to Esports Earnings, Fortnite Battle Royale has taken over Counter-Strike Global Offensive in total esports prize money awarded to its players.

Fortnite has reportedly distributed $82.9 Million Dollars in total prize distribution taking CSGOโ€™s spot despite having been relatively new to the community and falling short in terms of active players compared to CSGO, while the 2012 released CSGO has hosted countless tournaments all across the globe and attracting players from all over the world with an evergrowing fan base. Although it was swift to get ahead of Counter-Strike but they are far behind Dota 2 as the MOBA boasts a whopping $130 million lead ahead of Fortnite. It is hard to get by Dota as the latest Ti9 saw a prize pool of $34 million, highest ever in history for a single esports event.

But with clouds are surrounding Epic Games as although pushing such high figures in terms of prize pool, Fortniteโ€™s popularity has been going downhill ever since as a sudden trend of Minecraft on the internet(PewDiePie effect is still real) has witnessed popular streamers like Myth and CouRage hop in the Minecraft bandwagon and players has been open about lagging issues in three-man squad format which has been a serious issue for EPIC.

Report: coldzera to play for FaZe Clan at ESL One New York

The drama surrounding the final two members for FaZe Clan seems to finally come to an end since signings are imminent as we are two days away from ESL New York. According to Dexerto, the signing of Coldzera and Brokyy are just a matter of time.

After NEO left the IGL seat vacant and GuardiaN being picked up by Natus Vincere, two spots were left and the fans were eagerly waiting for the new faces to join the super team. So far the potential targets were closed down by rumours into three players Coldzera, Brokyy, and Aleksib. Although nothing has been confirmed yet by FaZe but various sources are an indication towards Brokyy and Cold to be the final players to fill the shoes left by NEO and GuardiaN. Helvjis โ€˜Brokyyโ€™ Sauskants will be a stand-in for them for an internally discussed period. The 18 years old Latvian has often picked up the AWP during his time in Epsylon and is likely to do so for FaZe but looking at their line-up a hybrid AWP style like Liquid seems a pragmatic approach.

In a recent picture posted we see NiKo Yanko and Brokyy pose for a photo in front of a reflective surface which also captured a Coldzera like figure taking the snap. Cold is closer to FaZe Clan than ever, this has been a move expected for a long time but as ESL NY is on its edges we are to see the move come through sooner than later. The photo solidifying the rumors that Cold has traveled to New York with FaZe and is indefinitely to stand in for them.

Expected FaZe CS:GO roster for ESL One New York:

  • Nikola โ€œNiKoโ€ Kovacs
  • Hรฅvard โ€œrainโ€ Nygaard
  • Olof โ€œolofmeisterโ€ Kajbjer
  • Helvijs โ€œbrokyโ€ Saukants
  • Marcelo โ€œcoldzeraโ€ David

ESL One New York will kick off in just two days on September 26 and the show will continue till 29th, featuring a prize pool of $200,000 in Barclays Centre.
