Why Sony Is Ending Physical PS5 Discs
Sony first revealed its plan to end physical disc production for new PlayStation games through the PlayStation Blog in July 2026. The announcement drew immediate criticism from fans who prefer owning physical copies of games.
Sony addressed the backlash during its Q1 FY2026 earnings call on July 31, 2026. CFO Lin Tao confirmed that PlayStation would move forward with the plan, while stating the company intends to proceed cautiously given the concerns raised by players.
What Happens to Existing PS5 Discs
Discs released before January 2028 will remain playable on PS5 consoles equipped with a disc drive. This includes upcoming physical titles such as God of War Laufey and Marvel’s Wolverine, both of which are set to release before the cutoff.
Sony has not clarified whether the PlayStation 6, rumored to launch in fall 2027, will support discs purchased before the January 2028 deadline.
Fan Backlash Against Sony’s Digital-Only Push
The decision to end physical disc production has led to sustained pushback from PlayStation fans. Reports indicate that more than 100,000 people have signed a petition asking Sony to reverse the move.
Players have also organized a week-long boycott called PS Blackout, planned to begin on August 23, 2026. During this period, participants plan to keep their PS5 consoles powered off and avoid making any digital purchases on the platform.
