On September 5, 2023, millions of Indian players were eagerly waiting to download Free Fire India. Garena had officially announced the game on August 31, 2023, confirming that it would return to India with exclusive content, local features, and cricket legend MS Dhoni as its brand ambassador. However, just one day before launch, the company announced an indefinite delay.
Today, September 5, 2026, marks three years since the planned Free Fire India launch date, and players are still waiting. Garena has not shared any official launch timeline or major update since announcing the delay.
Free Fire India launch that never happened
The announcement of Free Fire India created massive excitement in the gaming community. Along with revealing the game, Garena also signed an MoU with the Government of Uttar Pradesh to support esports and game development in the state.
Everything appeared to be ready for launch. But on September 4, 2023, Garena postponed the release, saying it needed more time to refine the gameplay experience. Since then, the company has remained almost completely silent about the project and Free Fire India launch date.

Why is FF India still not available?
Garena has never officially explained the exact reason behind the long delay. However, several factors could be responsible.
The biggest reason appears to be Free Fire MAX, which has become one of Garena’s most successful games in the country. Over the last three years, the company has continued investing heavily in Free Fire MAX through regular updates, esports tournaments, creator events, and community programs.
Events like the Free Fire MAX India Cup (FFMIC), Free Fire MAX Asia Invitational, and Booyah Awards clearly show that Garena’s focus has remained on growing Free Fire MAX instead of launching a separate Indian version.
Launching FF India today could split the existing player base. Many players would likely switch from Free Fire MAX to the India-exclusive version, affecting both matchmaking and revenue.
BGMI offers an important example
A similar situation was seen in the PUBG ecosystem.
After PUBG Mobile was banned in India, KRAFTON launched PUBG: New State. However, once BGMI arrived, most Indian players moved back to BGMI, leaving New State with a much smaller player base.
Garena is likely aware of this example. Launching FF India while Free Fire MAX is already performing strongly could create the same situation, where one game replaces the other instead of expanding the audience.
No communication for three years
Perhaps the biggest concern for players is the lack of communication.
Normally, games preparing for launch receive teasers, developer updates, beta tests, or marketing campaigns. In Free Fire India’s case, none of these have happened after the delay announcement.
Three years without any meaningful update has left the community uncertain about the project’s future.
