Sources tell TalkEsport that Indian cricket legend MS Dhoni has participated in a new shoot involving Free Fire players, with information also pointing towards a Google gaming-related component whose exact role remains unclear.
Indian cricket legend Mahendra Singh Dhoni has participated in a new shoot involving Free Fire players, sources familiar with the development have told TalkEsport, marking another potentially significant piece of activity around Garena’s Indian gaming ecosystem.
TalkEsport understands that the production also has a Google gaming-related connection, although the exact nature of Google’s involvement could not be independently established at the time of publication. It therefore remains unclear whether Google is involved through Google Play, as a platform or promotional partner, as part of a wider gaming campaign, or in another capacity. The tentative list of players who reportedly were part of this shoot are:
- Arshil Arsh Ahmed, Revenant Xspark
- Sarvesh Marco, Godlike Esports
- Ayush Louis Jangir, Team Apex Gaming
Neither Garena nor Google has publicly announced a new collaboration involving Dhoni at the time of writing, and TalkEsport has not seen evidence establishing that the shoot represents a launch campaign for Free Fire India. The information concerning the shoot and Google’s involvement should therefore be treated separately from what the companies have officially announced.
The timing, however, makes the development particularly interesting. The official Free Fire India Google Play listing was updated on September 24, 2026, while renewed activity surrounding the long-delayed title has emerged only days later. Garena has still not announced a replacement release date for a game originally scheduled to arrive three years ago.
If the new Dhoni production is ultimately connected to another push around Free Fire India, it would represent one of the most notable pieces of promotional activity surrounding the project since Garena postponed its original launch in September 2023.
MS Dhoni’s new Free Fire shoot comes at an interesting time
The information received by TalkEsport points towards Dhoni appearing in a production involving personalities associated with Free Fire rather than participating in an unrelated celebrity shoot. That distinction matters because Dhoni’s relationship with Garena was originally established specifically around the company’s ambitions for Free Fire in India.
Garena announced the former India captain as the brand ambassador for Free Fire India in August 2023 when the publisher unveiled plans to launch a localised version of the battle royale in the country. TalkEsport reported at the time that Dhoni would headline Garena’s Free Fire India campaign alongside several other prominent Indian sports personalities. The original campaign also involved football captain Sunil Chhetri, badminton star Saina Nehwal, tennis legend Leander Paes and kabaddi player Rahul Chaudhari, giving Garena an unusually sports-heavy marketing strategy for its planned return to the Indian market.
Three years later, Dhoni appearing in fresh production involving Free Fire personalities would therefore be notable even without a confirmed Free Fire India launch date.
What is Google’s role in the Dhoni and Free Fire shoot?
This is currently the most intriguing, and least established, element of the development. TalkEsport’s source indicated that Google gaming is connected to the production in some capacity, but we have not independently verified what that means operationally.
One possibility would naturally involve Google Play, given Free Fire’s position as a major Android title and Free Fire India’s continuing presence on Google’s storefront. However, TalkEsport has found no public announcement from Google or Garena confirming that Google Play is participating in the shoot, and we are therefore not presenting that interpretation as fact.
The distinction is particularly important because references to “Google Gaming” can be used informally to describe different parts of Google’s wider gaming ecosystem rather than identifying one specific commercial programme or partnership.
Until either company provides additional information, what TalkEsport can report is that our source has identified a Google-related gaming component to the production, while its precise role remains unconfirmed.
Free Fire India has shown fresh activity in September
The new information arrives during an unusually active period around a game that had otherwise spent years in limbo.
Free Fire India remains listed on Google Play, with the official Free Fire India store page identifying Garena International III as its developer and continuing to advertise the title’s Battle Royale, Clash Squad and Craftland modes.
The listing showed fresh activity with an update dated September 24, 2026, placing it only days before TalkEsport learned about the new production involving Dhoni and Free Fire players.
Additional community activity surrounding Free Fire India subsequently resurfaced, renewing speculation that Garena could be preparing another push around the project. None of that activity, however, has been accompanied by a new launch date from Garena.
That distinction matters enormously. A Google Play update, renewed community messaging and information concerning a new Dhoni shoot can collectively indicate fresh activity around the Free Fire ecosystem in India, but none independently confirms that Free Fire India is about to launch.
TalkEsport therefore understands this as a developing story rather than confirmation of a release.
Free Fire India was supposed to launch three years ago
Garena originally announced Free Fire India on August 31, 2023, presenting it as a version of the battle royale specifically tailored to Indian players.
The company planned to launch the game on September 5 of that year, with local cloud hosting and storage provided by Yotta Infrastructure. Garena also announced India-specific safety features including parental supervision, gameplay limitations and reminders encouraging players to take breaks. Only days after unveiling the game, however, Garena postponed its launch. The company initially said it required “a few more weeks” to refine the experience before making Free Fire India available. Those weeks eventually became years.
TalkEsport revisited Free Fire India’s extraordinary three-year delay earlier this year, examining what happened to a game that accumulated enormous pre-registration interest but never reached its announced September 2023 release.
That history is precisely why fresh activity involving Dhoni deserves considerably more scrutiny than an ordinary celebrity gaming campaign. He was one of the most important figures attached to Garena’s original Free Fire India announcement and was intended to become part of the game itself through his Thala character.
Dhoni has shot Free Fire promotional material before
There is also an important qualification to the current scoop, Dhoni appearing in Free Fire promotional material is not unprecedented, and his involvement alone should not be treated as proof of an imminent launch.
Garena produced promotional material around Dhoni when Free Fire India was originally announced in 2023, including content connected to his in-game Thala identity. Another apparent Dhoni-Free Fire production generated considerable community speculation in late 2024 after footage circulated showing the cricket icon wearing Garena-branded clothing on what appeared to be a professional production set. That activity was not followed by the launch of Free Fire India.
That precedent is another reason TalkEsport is not interpreting the existence of a new shoot as independent confirmation that Garena is preparing to release Free Fire India.
What makes the current situation more interesting is the surrounding context: information about a fresh production has arrived alongside new activity on Free Fire India’s official Google Play presence and a significantly more active competitive ecosystem around Free Fire MAX in India.
Why MS Dhoni remains important to Free Fire India
Dhoni was arguably the centrepiece of Garena’s original localisation strategy. Rather than simply importing Free Fire’s existing global marketing into India, Garena attempted to associate its comeback with some of the country’s most recognisable sporting figures, with Dhoni positioned at the front of that strategy.
As TalkEsport previously detailed in our guide to Free Fire India’s brand ambassador, Dhoni’s involvement extended beyond endorsement because Garena intended to transform him into the playable character Thala. His involvement therefore remains intrinsically connected to the unfinished Free Fire India project in a way that an ordinary celebrity endorsement would not.
If Garena were preparing to reactivate elements of its original India campaign, bringing Dhoni back in front of the cameras would make strategic sense. For now, however, that remains an interpretation rather than an announced plan.
Free Fire esports in India is already active again
There is another major difference between the Free Fire India announcement of 2023 and the situation surrounding the game today: Garena no longer needs to rebuild India’s competitive Free Fire ecosystem entirely from scratch. Free Fire MAX has continued to serve Indian players, while Garena’s competitive activity in the country has accelerated considerably during 2026.
The Free Fire MAX India Cup 2026 Fall concluded at the Noida Indoor Stadium on September 27 with a ₹1 crore prize pool, providing another major domestic competition for the Indian Free Fire community immediately before the latest activity surrounding the wider brand.
That means any revival of Free Fire India’s consumer-facing campaign would arrive alongside an esports ecosystem that is already operating rather than a completely dormant competitive scene. It also makes a production involving Dhoni and Free Fire personalities more commercially relevant than it might have appeared during the years when the original Free Fire India project seemed largely inactive.
Does the MS Dhoni shoot mean Free Fire India is finally launching?
There is currently no new Free Fire India release date announced by Garena, and the information obtained by TalkEsport should not be interpreted as confirmation that the game is about to launch.
The September Google Play activity does not establish a release date, renewed community discussion does not establish one, and the existence of a new production involving Dhoni and Free Fire players does not independently prove that the shoot belongs to a Free Fire India launch campaign.
What can be established is considerably more interesting than the situation was only weeks ago. Free Fire India’s official Google Play presence has shown fresh activity, India’s competitive Free Fire ecosystem has just completed another major tournament, and TalkEsport has now learned that MS Dhoni has participated in a new production involving Free Fire players, with our source also pointing towards a Google gaming connection whose precise nature remains unconfirmed.
For a project that has spent three years without fulfilling its original launch announcement, that concentration of activity deserves attention without requiring speculation to be presented as fact. Whether the production ultimately forms part of Free Fire India’s long-awaited return, a Free Fire MAX campaign, a Google gaming initiative or something else entirely should become clearer once Garena, Google or the personalities involved begin making the project public.
TalkEsport is continuing to verify additional details surrounding the shoot and will update this report if further information becomes available.
