China eyes to ban PUBG, Fortnite and other games for โ€œpromoting incorrect valuesโ€

China has banned popular video games like PUBG and Fortnite among others, citing the use of โ€œincorrect valuesโ€, including blood, violence and nudity.

The Chinese Governmentโ€™s Online Ethics Review Committee put 20 games under the scanner, and ultimately selected 9 games that were completely banned.

While banning of PUBG and H1Z1 was expected, banning Fortnite raised some eyebrows as it does not really have Blood and Gore as mentioned in the guidelines.

Meanwhile CSGO still remains unbanned, but some of the skins in the game have been censored for depicting violence, like the USP-S | Kill Confirmed, which has the picture of a skull near its trigger.

Some other popular games like League of Legends [LOL] and Overwatch were not completely banned, but the committee recognised some issues it required fixing. In the case of World of Warcraft the chat rooms were found to be too toxic, while for LOL and Overwatch the โ€œoverly revealing female charactersโ€ promoted โ€œincorrect values.โ€

Valve reportedly unhappy with the ESL and Facebook streaming deal

1

Ever since ESL striking a deal with Facebook a year ago giving them exclusive streaming rights for certain CSGO and DOTA 2 tournaments, it has been met with widespread disdain from the respective communities, and finally it seems like Valve is unhappy as well.

Laggy streams, sound and quality issues, and just a general hatred towards streaming on Facebook rather than Twitch or YouTube saw a pitfall in the viewership.

Esports journalist Rod ‘Slasher’ Breslau tweeted โ€œThat marks the end of the final ESL CSGO or Dota stream on Facebook in 2018,โ€ following the ESL Pro League S8 Finals on December 9.โ€

โ€œReally poor viewership all year and Facebook hasn’t proven it can do streaming, to the detriment to both esports. Valve not happy. ESL neither even with $. Correction: Deal runs through end of 2019.โ€

To put this in perspective, ESL Pro League games saw a huge drop off with regular season games getting only about 10k viewers compared to the 60000+ viewers for the previous season on Twitch, while the finals, which saw home team Astralis fight for an extra million dollars, saw a mere 30 thousand views, which was minuscule compared to the 1 million viewers achieved by the ELEAGUE Major in 2017.

While the deal with Facebook for DOTA is now over and is likely to be discontinued, CSGO fans will have to wait for at least another year till the deal expires at the end of 2019.

Cycling Esports Championship comes to Britain in 2019

1

British Cycling has agreed to a two-year partnership with virtual racing and training app Zwift, which will include an โ€œeRacingโ€ national championship next year, open to everyone.

Both womenโ€™s team Canyon-SRAM and menโ€™s WorldTour team Dimension Data have used Zwift competitions to โ€œtalent spotโ€ riders in the last two years.

In 2016 Leah Thorvilson earned herself a contract with Canyon-SRAM, while Tanja Erath did the same last year. Ollie Jones also won a contract with Dimension Dataโ€™s under-23 development team last year, and British Cycling will use their โ€œindoor national championshipsโ€ to help find any potential future stars, too.

โ€œThe esports market is particularly exciting for cycling as it enables so many more people to participate and be active,โ€ Jonathan Rigby, British Cyclingโ€™s commercial director, said on the federationโ€™s web site.

โ€œWeโ€™re thrilled to be exploring this new territory with Zwift to innovate in cycle sport. Their technology and our cycling expertise will together allow communities of cyclists to get more out of riding bikes for competition and for fun.

โ€œWeโ€™re also excited about what this could mean for identifying talent,โ€ Rigby continued. โ€œWeโ€™re proud to have a wealth of gifted riders competing on the world stage and are confident that Zwift technology will enable us to unearth more future stars.โ€

The competition, which is set to start in February or March 2019, is open to all riders, who will have to race through a number of qualifying events before the countryโ€™s best meet to battle it out through a number of different race formats, with a national championโ€™s jersey awarded to the winner. However, to qualify for the finals, you have to be a member of British Cycling.

International Cycling Union (UCI) President David Lappartient told Cyclingnews in September  of the cycling governing bodyโ€™s intention to launch what would be a similar esports world championships.

Astralis beat liquid 3-1 to win ESL Pro League Season 8 Finals

1

Astralis are champions once again after winning the $250,000 ESL Pro League Season Eight-Finals in Odense, Denmark earlier today.

The Danish stars defeated Team Liquid in the best-of-five grand final of the week-long event, winning three maps out of four. Liquid chose Dust II and Mirage as their map picks, while Astralis selected Inferno and Train. Overpass was the leftover decider map from the veto phase.

Grand Final

Astralis vs Team Liquid

  • Liquid won Train 16-8
  • Astralis won Mirage 16-11
  • Astralis won Inferno 16-11
  • Astralis won Dust II 16-10

Liquid dominated Astralis on map one, Train, by securing an early series lead with a 16-8 map win behind a stand-out 23 kill performance from Jonathan โ€˜EliGEโ€™ Jablonowski.

From there, the series headed to Mirage – a map that has become a staple for clashes between the two teams. Astralis were able to level the best-of-five series at 1-1 with a 16-11 win. In-game leader Lukas โ€˜gla1veโ€™ Rossander led the way with 31 kills, helping his team clutch out some incredibly-tight rounds.

For the third map of the series, the two teams loaded into Inferno. The map has held some iconic matches between Liquid and Astralis over the last year – including a 16-12 back and forth brawl in the eventโ€™s group stages. Like they did earlier in the tournament, the Danes picked up victory by a scoreline of 16-11.

Despite taking another tough loss, Team Liquidโ€™s future looks bright. Theyโ€™re the only team to consistently battle against Astralis and put up a good fight in playoff games and best-of-five grand final matches. Going into 2019, the North Americans will likely work on perfecting their brand of Counter-Strike, much like the Danes.

Astralisโ€™ championship win at EPL Season Eight undoubtedly solidifies them as the best CS:GO team in the world in 2018.

Kuku, TNC & The Chongqing Major Recital

0

The Chongqing Major has been the home to the largest controversy in DotA 2 in 2018. Carlo โ€œKukuโ€ Palad, a DotA 2 player from TNC Predator, was banned from attending an upcoming tournament after he made racist comments against the Chinese team during a public game.

Palad was accused of typing the phrase โ€œching chong,โ€ usually used derisively to mimic the Chinese language. Palad did so in a public game with Chinese players in November 2018. However, his team TNC refused to bar him from participating despite outrage from Chinese stakeholders.

DotA 2 developer Valve announced in a statement that it was banning Palad from participating in the upcoming Chongqing Major DotA 2 tournament in China in January 2019.

โ€œTNC has mishandled the situation on multiple occasions, making the situation much worse than it needed to be,โ€ the company said in its statement.

Valve previously criticized Paladโ€™s statements but refused to step in. In its most recent statement, the company explained that TNCโ€™s refusal to discipline their player forced them to change their stance on the controversy.

Epic Store has arrived to compete with Steam

0

Epic Gamesย announced earlier this weekย that it was entering the digital game store business, and just a few days later theย Fortniteย developer is ready to open its marketplace. The newย Epic Store, which will live inside the Epic Launcher app for Windows and Mac, is now live after a surprise launch in the middle of the Game Awards in Los Angeles this evening.

Epic is only confirming 14 titles right now, but its first two to be available right now are high-profile ones: Ashen from developer A44 and publisher Annapurna Interactive, and an all-new game from Bastion and Transistor developer Supergiant Games called Hades. Some other big names include Gunfire Gamesโ€™ recently released Darksiders 3 and indie classics Journeyand Super Meat Boy.

Hereโ€™s the full list of titles:

  • Ashen by A44 and Annapurna Interactive (now available)
  • Darksiders III by Gunfire Games and THQ Nordic (available Dec. 14)
  • Hades by Supergiant Games (now available)
  • Hello Neighbor: Hide and Seek by tinyBuild (now available)
  • Genesis Alpha One by Radiation Blue and Team17 (coming soon)
  • Journey by thatgamecompany and Annapurna Interactive (coming soon)
  • Maneater by Tripwire Interactive (coming soon)
  • Outer Wilds by Mobius Digital and Annapurna Interactive (coming soon)
  • Pathless by Giant Squid Studios (coming soon)
  • Rebel Galaxy Outlaw by Double Damage Games (coming soon)
  • Satisfactory by Coffee Stain Studios (coming soon)
  • Subnautica by Unknown Worlds (available for free from Dec. 14 – Dec. 27)
  • Super Meat Boy by Team Meat (available for free from Dec. 28 – Jan. 10)
  • World War Z by Saber Interactive (coming soon)

While Epic will be going up against the industry-leading Valve, which operates Steam and is the lead distributor of PC games, theย Fortniteย creator does have one very substantial benefit itโ€™s hoping will entice game makers to release titles on its store. Breaking with the industry standard 70 / 30 percent revenue split, Epic said on Tuesday that its store would offer an 88 / 12 percent, which means it will let developers keep more revenue on each sale than any other competing game store. In addition to that, Epic is waiving its 5 percent royalty fee for all games made using its Unreal Engine, which is a huge boon for indie developers who are already squeezed for cash by paying the revenue split fee.

New Battle Royale sees 200,000 concurrent viewers on Twitch for CSGO

2

The hype around the new Battle Royale mode for CSGO called Danger Zone has certainly beefed up, after Twitch recorded over 200000 concurrent viewers for the game shortly after its release at 3:30 am IST on December 7.

This means that the game has reached new highs, with that number being the most since IEM Chicago Grand Finale on the 11th of November. Over half of the views were because of popular Canadian Streamer Michael โ€œshroudโ€ Grzesiek and it was a proud moment for CS enthusiasts as it beat Fortnite to claim number 1 spot, albeit for a short while, despite it launching Season 7 of its Battle Royale pass.

This update officially completes the entry of CS in the hugely popular Battle Royale format, taking cues from Fortnite and more recently Call of Duty Black Ops 4. Although late, the buzz around the game has caught the attention of gamers which has increased its player base, but only time will tell whether this spike will actually sustain.

CSGO Battle Royale MP5-SD Lab Rats Skin; Where to get it

0

In the wake of the launch of the new Battle Royale mode in Counter Strike: Global Offensive called Danger Zone, Valve has decided to reward loyal players by dropping a new skin called MP5-SD Lab Rats when a user plays the Battle Royale mode for the first time.

All prime users are eligible for this drop, while new users will have to purchase the prime status available on the steam store. The offer is only for a limited period of time, and it is expected that it will only stand till the next major update is released.

Interestingly, the name Lab Rats most likely refers to an experiment of sorts, where the users will be the โ€œLab Ratsโ€ on whom the โ€œexperimentโ€ of the Battle Royale mode will be tested upon.

CS:GO battle royale mode Danger Zone reports crashes in opening day of its launch

3

Its been only 12 hours since the new Battle Royale mode has been launched, and already there are several reports by users of the game mode crashing, while others have faced the issue of the game not opening altogether.

According to a Reddit post, this issue was mainly reported by AMD CPUโ€™s, although it was prevalent in Intelโ€™s integrated graphics as well. Molotovs also seem to be travelling an infinite distance instead of exploding mid-air.

This issue, however, seems to be largely limited to lower end PCโ€™s as streamers have not faced any problem since its launch, while majority of the complains in the reddit post are those having older generation setups.
