Today, Guild Esports, the new global esports business, unveils its first highly anticipated apparel collection – PATCH 0.0.1 – featuring graphics by renowned London streetwear designer, Fergus Purcell.

Available now, the limited edition monochrome collection is emblazoned with the Guild logo, exclusively designed by Purcell, most widely known as the creator of the iconic identity for the skatewear label Palace.

PATCH 0.0.1 features unisex hoodies, t-shirts, a cap, and key keyring, all crafted from sustainable materials. The first 300 orders will be delivered with exclusive drawstring kit bags.

The range reflects the Guild’s mission to represent a new level of excellence in competitive gaming, entertainment and culture. The apparel fuses the cultures of street fashion and gaming and raises the bar for what it means to be a part of the booming esports scene.

David Beckham, who co-owns Guild, unveiled the drop to his 65 million followers on Instagram at 13.37 on Thursday, November 12th with a video featuring an exclusive track ‘Run This Ting (Guild)’ by the UK’s Prince of Grime, Yizzy.

Beckham comments, “I have followed Fergus’ work for a while now, and I love the Guild logo and graphics he has created for us. At Guild, we’re on a mission to build a culture of excellence in everything we do, so as one of London’s most iconic streetwear designers, Fergus was the perfect fit as our creative partner.”

Launched in June 2020, Guild represents the future of esports. The Guild is building its roster of top esports athletes to compete in some of the scene’s most popular titles including FIFA, Rocket League, and Valorant. Alongside this, Guild is preparing for the launch of The Guild Academy, a UK-based talent pipeline for esports athletes, based on the traditional sports academy model.

Astralis Launches New Talent Development Programme ‘Astralis Talent’

0

Danish esports organization Astralis has announced the launch of their new talent development initiative through a blog post on their official website.

As mentioned in the post, the new initiative named ’Astralis Talent’ is “designed to create a recruitment platform and training partner for the A teams, as well as contributing to the development of young talent in a professional setting.”

This new development program will operate out of the Copenhagen Headquarters of the org and will focus on games like CSGO and League of Legends.

CEO of Astralis Anders Hørsholt has claimed that they have invested significantly in creating ideal conditions for players to practice and progress in to help it become a possible recruitment platform for the org’s A teams in the future.

By introducing ‘Astralis Talent’, we invite local talent to be a part of our set-up and culture with the ambition to integrate young players into a healthy, competitive environment, introducing them to the life of a true professional.

Astralis Talent is an investment in the future as a possible recruitment platform for our A teams, as well as inhouse training for all players. It is a way for us to secure an even better connection to the local ecosystem and over time, we hope to elevate players into our A teams. This will not happen overnight, though, and we are going to work with the set-up and fine tune the processes over the coming months.

Over time, the Astralis Talent set-up will enable the A-players to stay competitive when not playing for the A team, while letting a selected group of ambitious youngsters take full advantage of being a part of a top professional organization, competing together with far more experienced players.

Anders Hørsholt, CEO, Astralis

Ever since we started, we have had discussions around how to implement talent development into our overall strategy without compromising in other areas. We finally feel, we have the resources and facilities and we have gained a lot of experience, which we obviously did not have when starting out.

Our new A team coaches in League of Legends have brought a lot of experience and ideas and together with zonic, performance manager Lars Robl and the three new talent coaches, we will have an extremely strong group around the teams.

The Astralis Talent set-up is a talent education programme with full access to Astralis Group’s facilities and organization, aimed at integrating the talents into the performance culture of Astralis. For a start, we will most likely have 1-2 players on each team who are older and more experienced, but we aim to work mainly with 14/15-20 years old players. We will include their parents to the degree needed, and we will insist the players continue with school and education.

In year one, we will have a total of 3 teams in League of Legends. In 2021, the A team and the Talent team will be working out of the Copenhagen HQ, while the Academy team will still be working and playing in the Spanish second division. In Counter-Strike, both the A team and talents will be working and playing out of Copenhagen and the talent team will compete in relevant regional tournaments.

It is a move for the future, and it will take time for us to implement the full set-up. Initially, we consider these separate rosters from the A-teams and it will not affect the A team roster size in Counter-Strike. However, over time, it is a clear ambition to fully integrate Astralis Talent into the overall performance and player development strategy, Hvidt explains.

Talent teams and rosters in both League of Legends and Counter-Strike will be finalized by early January at the latest

Kasper Hvidt, Director of Sports, Astralis.

British CSGO pro Owen “smooya” Butterfield has made a public apology to his fans addressing his past behavior which was under fire from the community recently.

“Made too many mistakes in my career outside of the game which have heavily messed with my career in the game,” the 21-year-old said in a tweet. “My apologies to those who have wanted the best for me as well as those who currently want the best for me.”

Previously, Smooya has been a part of renowned esports orgs like BIG and Chaos Esports Club in the past. He was picked up by c0ntact Gaming on a trial in August 2020 which ended in October.

COVID-19: ESPN shuts down Esports Editorials

0

American multinational sports media conglomerate is laying off its Esports editorial staff amid the COVID-19 pandemic, a company spokesperson has confirmed to The Esports Observer.

The division will no longer actively cover esports news, events, and business coverages exclusively. The workforce reduction comes as Disney — ESPN’s parent company — is bleeding money because of the COVID-19 crisis, which has slashed theme park, cruise ship, and movie theatre attendance.

“As you know, we value transparency in our internal dialogue, and that means in both good and challenging times,” Pitaro wrote in the memo. “After much consideration, I have some difficult organizational decisions to share. We will be reducing our workforce, impacting approximately 300 valued team members, in addition to 200 open positions.” The network, which employs roughly 6,000 people worldwide, also released a statement Thursday from Pitaro confirming the layoffs.

We have made the difficult decision to cease operations for our dedicated daily esports editorial and content,” an ESPN spokesperson told The Esports Observer. “We recognize esports as an opportunity to expand our audience, and we’ll continue to do so through coverage from the broader team for major events, breaking news, and coverage.”

Disney CEO Bob Chapek hinted at a possible reduction in staff as the company restructures its media and entertainment divisions into a single organization that will be responsible for content distribution, ad sales, and Disney+.

ESPN layoff memo

Dear colleagues,

As you know, we value transparency in our internal dialogue, and that means in both good and challenging times. After much consideration, I have some difficult organizational decisions to share. We will be reducing our workforce, impacting approximately 300 valued team members, in addition to 200 open positions.

Today is hard because ESPN has always been — and will always be — fortified by its fantastic people. Teamwork, dedication, spirit and grit have built this place and are what make ESPN special. Prior to the pandemic, we had been deeply engaged in strategizing how best to position ESPN for future success amidst tremendous disruption in how fans consume sports. The pandemic’s significant impact on our business clearly accelerated those forward-looking discussions. In the short term, we enacted various steps like executive and talent salary reductions, furloughs, and budget cuts, and we implemented innovative operations and production approaches, all in an effort to weather the COVID storm.

We have, however, reached an inflection point. The speed at which change is occurring requires great urgency, and we must now deliver on serving sports fans in a myriad of new ways. Placing resources in support of our direct-to-consumer business strategy, digital, and, of course, continued innovative television experiences, is more critical than ever. However, building a successful future in a changing world means facing hard choices. Making informed decisions about how and where we need to go – and, as always, in the most efficient way possible – is by far the most challenging job of any leadership team.

And, while it must be done looking through a business lens, it also must be done with great respect and genuine concern for people. We are parting ways with some exceptional team members – some of whom have been here for a long time – and all of whom have made important contributions to ESPN. We’re very grateful for all they’ve meant to us, and I assure you we are taking steps to make their transitions easier. I am proud of the people at ESPN.

Together, we have overcome tremendous challenges and adversity over these past several months and please know that the decisions and plans executed today were not made lightly. They are, however, necessary and I am convinced that we will move forward and effectively navigate this unprecedented disruption. Our Human Resources and Communications teams will continue to keep you posted on any updates, and you’ll be hearing more detail about our future direction in the next few weeks. In the meantime, if you have questions about anything outlined in this note, please do not hesitate to raise them with your leadership team or HR Business Partner.

With gratitude,

Jimmy
