Ubisoft Sued for Shutting Down Crew Servers

A Controversial End for a Pioneering Online Racing Game

Crew was a popular racing game released in 2014 focused on the online racing genre that saw early success only for Forza to get the better of it further down the line which prompted Ubisoft to shut down the game servers and now they are on the receiving end of a lawsuit.

While Crew grew popular in 2014, it could be deemed that the game was ahead of its time. While online racing may be popular now, pioneered by Forza, abandoning an offline and single-player mode in 2014 was too bold of a move.

Following the player count dropping to alarming numbers, Ubisoft was forced to shut the game down in March 2024. Two players did not take this lightly and they were forced to give up access to something they paid for which pushed them to file a lawsuit.

“To further rub salt on the wound, Defendants decided that they would not provide consumers with the basic courtesy of leaving intact the single-player version of the game so that the thousands of consumers who paid hard-earned money for The Crew could at least enjoy some portion of this beloved game offline,” read the filing.

While laws on digital property give certain rights to the developers, this incident in particular may see the verdict go either way. Only time can tell what becomes of this lawsuit, till then Crew servers remain shut.
