Team Vitality lost a Stage 3 series to 9z. They still walked into the playoffs as the top seed. Three days later they were gone in the quarterfinals. None of that is a contradiction. It is exactly what the IEM Cologne Major 2026 Stage 3 Swiss system is now built to do.
The Bo3 rewrite
In February, ESL announced that every Stage 3 match at Cologne would be a best-of-three — the first time a Major has done it. This adjustment elevated the IEM Cologne Major 2026 Stage 3 by making all deciding matches more competitive. Stages 1 and 2 keep their teeth: everything outside advancement and elimination matches is a best-of-one, where a single cold half on Anubis, which replaced Train in the Active Duty pool on January 22, ends you before you have warmed up.
Stage 3 removed that knife. Sixteen teams, all Bo3, eight survive. The logic was that more maps reveal true level, and it mostly held. 9z dropped Inferno to Vitality and then took Mirage and Dust II. NAVI, FUT and The MongolZ all played competent Counter-Strike and all went home anyway. Notably, under the IEM Cologne Major 2026 Stage 3 format, a bad map became survivable. A bad three weeks did not.
Buchholz does not forget
Swiss pairs winners with winners. Buchholz, the combined record of every opponent you have faced, breaks the ties and, at a Major, seeds the playoff bracket. Survive the hardest schedule in the room and you are handed a number that reads like dominance and behaves like a trap.
Vitality seeded first. Spirit seeded second. Both landed on the same half of an eight-team single-elimination bracket, and Falcons walked through both of them. Vitality in the quarterfinals, Spirit in the semis. FURIA arrived at the grand final from the opposite side, past Aurora, and lost 3–0 to a Falcons side that had already eaten the two teams Stage 3 had certified as the best.
m0NESY took MVP. Falcons took their first Major. Ultimately, IEM Cologne Major 2026 Stage 3 changed how teams approach both strategy and consistency throughout the event.
Stage 3 gave every team room to lose a map. It never gave them room to lose the shape of their run. The punishment did not disappear at Cologne. It moved upstream, into three weeks of pairings nobody was watching, and it collected in the bracket.
