Astralis and the Pressure to Perform: A Starladder Berlin Major 2019 Preview

“To the stars; and back”. If ever there was a phrase that summed up Astralis and their journey in the last year or so. The Danish stack had a supposed mental hurdle of not being able to convert their good placements into event victories at the onset.

The Rise

But, bringing in gla1ve in place of karrigan worked like a charm for Astralis. The former Heroic star, along with zonic, brought in fresh tactical styles combined with more focus on the impact utility usage can make. The improvement wasn’t instant but gradual and definite.

The Danish stack deservedly won the ELEAGUE Major in 2017. Astralis began correcting their mentality and went from being a top-four team to title hopefuls to ultimately title favourites by early 2018.

But, it is after the shocking departure of Kjaerbye and the subsequent addition of Magisk that Astralis became the dominant side they have been regarded as by analysts all over the world.

The newest iteration boasted a win rate of more than 77%, an unprecedented statistic from any team in the modern-day Counter Strike scene. To give it a fair view, the current iteration of Astralis has won almost the same number of games/maps (254) as all of their previous iterations combined (259), but with a staggering difference in terms of losses (74 current vs 153 all former).

What was once thought of as a questionable and desperate decision is now hailed as one of the best in the CS ecosystem. Magisk has now become a key star within the lineup outgrowing the early supposed tertiary role he would be given when he joined.

The Self-Created Pitfall

So, what has led to their downfall? There is a famous quote that goes, “Everyday you do not train, the Enemy grows stronger” that best describes the situation Astralis find themselves in.

The Danish stack chose to skip many events in order to recuperate after their triumph at the IEM Katowice Major, securing back-to-back Major trophies after their win over Natus Vincere earlier at the FACEIT Major in London.

In fact, Astralis attended just 8 events after IEM Katowice 2019, two of which were regulation group stage or qualification events – ECS Season 7 week 1 and ESL Pro League Season 9. Two others were the events (Finals) they qualified through the aforementioned phase. Three of the 8 events were Blast Pro Series circuit events, which for a lack of a better explanation, just does not have an ideal format to be considered part of the professional circuit.

The only Major LAN Event they were a part of since their win at IEM Katowice 2019 was ESL ONE Cologne 2019, where they were handed a beating by ZyWoO and co. in the semi-finals, with Astralis unable to reach double figures in two of the three maps and barely edging Vitality in the map they won.

In the meantime, Liquid acquired Stewie2k from mibr, who chose to return to being a full Brazilian roster. Much was made of the move, with the North American organisation seeing zews follow TACO back to mibr. But, in adreN, they recruited a coach, who, despite being fairly new to the world of coaching, had a modern view of the game and knew most of the players on the Liquid roster. In addition, adreN was still playing, albeit semi-professionally with Mythic, and would have also taken some gimmicks from teams in the Tier-2 circuit.

What followed suit was a fluent and flexible style of play from Liquid. But, an even more impressive challenge in which they succeeded was to look dangerous on their T sides, and not just due to their firepower. It was down to adreN in part but also to the players who had willingly bought into his tactical briefs.

Liquid overtook Astralis as the new Numero Uno in the HLTV Rankings and deservedly so, after their many LAN triumphs. The North Americans also removed any doubts as to who the superior team was, defeating Astralis at the ESL Pro League Season 9 Finals and winning the event along with ESL One Cologne 2019, where Astralis were also present but succumbed to Vitality.

Uncharted Territory

So now, Astralis, going into the Starladder Berlin Major, have not won a single credible LAN event since IEM Katowice. Unlike other Majors, Astralis are no more overwhelming favourites and now have a target on their back. Astralis have lagged a bit and Vitality, Liquid, ENCE, Natus Vincere and maybe more would not view the Danish stack as a daunting opposition.

Astralis have gotten used to the pressure of winning. But, this is something new for the current iteration. A realm where they do not go into the Major as the favourites is uncharted territory.

Now, it’s not just about winning. It’s about the climb back to the top of the throne. It’s a battle of redemption for Astralis, who will now be under pressure to prove they haven’t lost their ‘golden touch’. The Starladder Berlin Major 2019 will be a battleground worth keeping an eye on.

It could potentially have two great storylines – of Astralis and an unprecedented threepeat or of their self-created downfall and the true crowning of a new King.

As Jon Snow rightly said, “There is only one war that matters. The Great War. And it is here.“

CSGO Berlin Major: oBo is half the age of NEO

Esport is a very fast-paced division where in esport athletes or more knowingly professional players begin their career as early as 15-years of age. On the other hand, several pros are either sidelined or they retire in their late 20s while few even get to play until their early 30s. Retirement age is this early because esport requires reflexes, concentration, impulsive decision-making ability and fine touch with the game which depletes as we grow.

The upcoming major will feature players ranging from tender age of 16-years to all the way up to 32-years of ago. For few players, this major could mark an end to their decisive careers while it’s dawn for a bunch of upcoming teenagers who have qualified for the most prominent CS:GO event.

Owen “oBo” Schlatter will be 16 years and 53 days old as the major begins while the IGL of FaZe Clan Filip “NEO” Kubski is nearly double his age โ€“ 32-year-old. This exhibits the diverse age groups in the professional Counter-Strike ecosystem. However, this major could be the last one for several professionals in their early 30s.

Head & Shoulders releases commercial featuring Virtus.pro RAMZES

As around last yearโ€™s TI8, we reported the partnership between the carry of Virtus.pro’s Dota 2 lineup Roman โ€œRAMZESโ€ Kushnarev and Head & Shoulders. As the first The International in China returns this year and is just around the corner, the campaign is back at it again.

RAMZES and HeadShoulders have released a commercial this time with him sporting his distinctive blue hair, dashing haircut, and a company of other gamers.

With this campaign, Head & Shoulders aims to support the gamers in modern society. Friends and relatives may not take them and their hobbies seriously, and some even judge their interests and looks.

Vega Squadron to halt its CSGO operations

Vega Squadron, an esports organization that participated in three recent CS:GO Majors, decides to temporarily shut down it’s CS:GO operations.

All of Vegaโ€™s players have been up on the market, including Denis โ€œseizedโ€ Kostin, the most well-known player from this lineup. He represented Natus Vincere from 2013 to 2018.

The team didnโ€™t make it out of the CIS Minor closed qualifier for the upcoming StarLadder Berlin Major. They played their last match this week at the BLAST Pro Series Moscow CIS closed qualifier and came in last place after losing to AVANGAR and Team Spirit.

Although seized and crew didn’t live up-to the expectations over the last few months, the organization took part in three CS:GO Majors: PGL Krakow in July 2017, ELEAGUE Boston in January 2018, and FACEIT London in September 2018. Vega never made it to the Legends stage at those events, but Vega squadron managed to pull out some major upsets against bigger squads

Since the organization is open to offers for its players, some of them should find a new home soon on another CIS team. Aside from seized, Dmitriy โ€œjRโ€ Chervak has been Vega Squadronโ€™s in-game leader for years and is a competent AWPer. Dmitriy โ€œDimaโ€ Bandurka also has experience playing for Team Spirit for almost three years.

Vega Squadron said this is a โ€œpause for the time beingโ€ but the Vega squadron didn’t mention that they’ll be returning back to the cs go scene leaving us to speculate that this might be the end of Vega squadron’s CS GO Era.

S1mple’s Twitch Channel Suspended for a Week

In a shocking turn of event, one of the highly skilled CS:GO players Oleksandr “s1mple” Kostyliev’s Twitch channel is suspended. Natus Vincere star player is one of the most popular streamers on Twitch and players tune in to watch his gameplay. The reason behind 21-year-old’s ban is not clear yet.

However, netizens suggest that he might have received Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) strike due to streaming copyrighted songs. “He said forbidden word on stream as a joke (in Russian),” commented a user on Reddit. However, another user suggested that Oleksandr is suspended because he streamed EASports while the FIFA tournament was live.

Definite cause behind the suspension is unclear, however, the article will be updated as the story unveils.

EDIT: Oleksandr is suspended for a period of one week. He received a suspension for using homophobic slur (pidor) on his July 29 stream.

Coldzera reveals to have received four offers; opens up about his time at MIBR

In a recent interview with ESPN Brazil, Marcelo “coldzera” David shed light on several instances that took place during his tenure at MIBR. He further briefed about future and his determinants in deciding upcoming team.

Photo HLTV

Marcelo revealed that the addition of former Cloud9 major winning star players โ€“ Jake “Stewie2K” Yip and Tarik “tarik” Celik was working quite well back then and the team displayed potential with play-off finishes. However, the team’s decision to pull the plug was quite amusing for Brazilian star and he criticized this move. Communication problem was another reason behind the departure of Jake and Tarik as MIBR went back to fully Brazilian roster soon after.

Marcelo said that FalleN and co. ‘went overboard’ in criticising his move to bench himself and further revealed that Epitรกcio “TACO” de Melo and Joรฃo “felps” Vasconcellos received same treatment during their exile. Marcelo said, “I think that was very low and it hurt me a lot to see that because I left the team and I did not say anything bad about anyone. I was just quiet like nothing had happened.”

“They kind of started to put the fans against me. It seems that they want me to feel bad about my choice, even though I had been thinking about it for a year, and they knew that. I was pretty upset and I did not think it was right.”

Marcelo revealed that he will be heading to Europe tomorrow to practice individually.“By the time I join another team I will be very strong,” he said. During his four years with FalleN and co., he revealed that for once he fought with Fernando “fer” Alvarenga because of gambling problems and later apologized. “I cried a lot because I really like fer.ย This made us open our eyes a little because the way we were playing was very bad and we should give our 110% again as a team.ย This made us finish 2017 brilliantly,” he said.

Coming to offers, Marcelo suggested that he has received offers from four organizations, however, he did not reveal much about the organizations. He said, “After a Major there is always this game of musical chairs in the scene, so I still need to wait and see if I receive some other offers.” He further added that financial issues are least of his concerns and organization, teammates and structure are his major concerns.
