Stephen Root Confirms He’s Playing Brian Heder in GTA 6

Actor Stephen Root has confirmed he plays Brian Heder in Grand Theft Auto VI, making him the first performer to publicly acknowledge a role in Rockstar’s upcoming game.

Root, known for King of the Hill, Office Space, and Barry, spoke to the Associated Press at the BAFTA TV Tea Party in Beverly Hills on September 13. Asked directly whether he appears in GTA 6, he said: “Yeah, you’re going to see me in that.”

What Stephen Root Said About His GTA 6 Role

Root told AP that keeping the role quiet was never really possible. “I think from the first rollout of GTA that they were doing almost a year ago, they had my character in there, and too many people knew me from King of the Hill and my voice, so that secret got divulged then,” he said.

He added that he was “so happy” to be part of the project, calling it “an amazing thing to look at.”

Root’s confirmation is notable because Rockstar has not released an official cast list for GTA 6, and actors working on the game are reportedly bound by non-disclosure agreements. Root’s remarks make him the first person connected to the cast to speak on the record about a specific character.

Who Is Brian Heder in GTA 6?

According to Rockstar’s official character page, Brian Heder is a longtime drug runner based in the Leonida Keys. The bio describes him as someone from “the golden age of smuggling” who still moves product through his boatyard with his third wife, Lori, while letting other people handle the riskier work.

Brian is tied directly to protagonist Jason Duval. He lets Jason live rent-free in one of his properties, on the condition that Jason helps with local shakedowns and stops by for Lori’s sangria now and then. The character first appeared in GTA 6’s second trailer and later showed up in the GTA 6 Extended Look Netflix special, where he had a scene with Jason and co-protagonist Lucia.

Why Fans Already Suspected Root’s Casting

Fans had flagged Root as the likely voice behind Brian Heder well before this confirmation, mostly because his delivery is hard to miss. Root voices Bill Dauterive and Buck Strickland on King of the Hill, and once Brian Heder’s dialogue surfaced in trailer footage, plenty of viewers picked up on the resemblance right away.

That kind of guesswork has followed most of GTA 6’s marketing. As covered in GameSpot’s report on the confirmation, Root is the only actor to confirm a role so far, even though speculation around the rest of the cast has been building for months.

Other Actors Linked to GTA 6

Root isn’t the only name fans have tried to attach to the game. Actress Manni L. Perez has long been rumored to play Lucia, though she hasn’t confirmed it on her official accounts. Fake profiles claiming to be Perez have circulated online, and she recently thanked fans for reporting them.

Separately, actor Robert Bogue, who played Agent Steve Haines in GTA 5, has said he auditioned for around 60 roles in GTA 6 without hearing back from Rockstar. For a fuller rundown of who fans think is behind the game’s two leads, see this breakdown of GTA 6’s speculated voice cast.

GTA 6 Release Date and What’s Next

GTA 6 is scheduled to launch on November 19, 2026, for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. No PC version has been announced yet.

With Root’s confirmation now public, attention shifts to whether the actors behind Jason and Lucia will follow. Rockstar has stayed quiet on both roles so far, and neither actor has spoken publicly the way Root has.
