What Is YOLO Mode in Modern Warfare 4?
YOLO mode in Modern Warfare 4 is a difficulty option that gives you 1 life for the entire campaign. YOLO stands for “You Only Live Once,” which is also the mode’s rule.
Standard difficulties send you back to the last save point after a death. YOLO does not. A death ends the run, and you restart the whole campaign from scratch.
To unlock YOLO, you must finish the campaign on Realism difficulty. Realism itself unlocks only after you finish the campaign on any difficulty.
Dying is not the only way to lose a run. These actions also trigger a full reset:
- Failing an objective
- Shooting civilians
- Straying too far from your squad
- Causing accidental friendly fire
Players who finish YOLO earn exclusive rewards.
How to Unlock YOLO in Modern Warfare 4
YOLO is not available from the start. It becomes selectable only after you complete the full campaign on Realism difficulty.
Follow these steps:
- Finish the Modern Warfare 4 campaign on any difficulty.
- Realism difficulty unlocks.
- Finish the full campaign again on Realism.
- YOLO appears as a selectable option.
This means you need at least 2 full playthroughs before your first YOLO attempt.
How YOLO Runs Work
Once unlocked, you can start a YOLO attempt at any time. You cannot choose a mission, though. Every attempt begins at the start of the campaign.
That rules out jumping into favorite missions and clearing them in any order. Any death or failure that would normally return you to a checkpoint sends you back to the beginning instead.
Standard modes use checkpoints and let you choose missions. YOLO uses a full restart from mission 1.
Modern Warfare 4 Campaign Details
Call of Duty campaign has 16 missions. They take place across the Korean Peninsula, Paris, New York, and Mumbai. The story follows a new invasion that threatens to destabilize the world, while Price hunts the person pulling the strings.
Campaign Early Access is live for players who digitally pre-order or pre-purchase the game. It runs until the official launch on October 23. DMZ early access starts on October 20.
The campaign also has completion rewards. Players earn them as they progress through missions. They become usable in Multiplayer and DMZ when the full game launches.
Infinity Ward has used the YOLO name before. Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare also had a YOLO mode with 1 life. Players unlocked it after finishing that game’s campaign on Specialist difficulty.
