Predictions play an important role when it comes to NFL – they allow us to compare teams, get a better idea of what to expect throughout the season, and help us to place bets to win a bit of cash. Of course, their predictions are based on a few factors, like last season, and players that have been added to the team, and we cannot rely on them to accurately predict what’s going to happen – as we saw this season with a few unexpected successes – which we will look at in more detail below. There were 256 props on last years Super Bowl at one sportsbook, so it’s safe to say it’s one of the most diverse events when it comes to bets you can choose from! But how did the predictions for last year turn out? We’ll look back at some of the teams, their predictions, and how they measured up last season. 

The Rams 

If you follow NFL, you’ll know that the Los Angeles Rams lifted the trophy at the SoFi stadium last year, as they went up against the mighty Cincinnati Bengals, to beat them 20 -23 on the day. When it comes to predictions, The Rams were not said to be in the top 3 when it came to expected winners of the Super Bowl last year, in fact, they were actually ranked 4^th. The team managed to beat the Bengals to come out on top – their first Super Bowl win since 2000.  The Rams had a record of 12-5 last season and won five titles over the course of 2021/2022, such as the Wild Card Playoffs, Divisional Playoffs, NFC championship and, of course, The Super Bowl. 

The 49ers 

The San Francisco 49ers are next up as we take a look at how their odds last season measured up. It was their 72^nd season in the NFL, and 5^th year under the leadership of Kyle Shanahan and John Lynch. The team managed to improve their record from the 2020 season, and even managed to go ahead and win 7 of the last 9 games they played. One of the most notable wins was over The Rams in week 18. The 49ers clawed back from being beaten 17-0, to win 27-24. This helped them to get into the playoffs. Their team had some prominent achievements too, having the 5^th best defence in the league.  The 49ers were ranked first to win the Super Bowl last year – which they didn’t manage to pull off, but they did manage to reach the NFC title game.  

The Chiefs 

The Kansas City-based Chiefs were ranked overall 5^th when it came to predictions last year, but they managed to reach their conference game. Their record was 12-5 throughout the season, and they hosted their conference championship – but unfortunately, although making it this far, they couldn’t quite hold off the Bengals, and lost 24-27 in overtime. The Chiefs managed to come 1^st in the AFC West Division and won their Wild Card Playoffs against The Steelers. They also racked up another win against the Bills in the Divisional Playoffs. Generally, the Chiefs had a good year, coming top of their conference – better than the predictions may have shown! 

The Bengals 

The Cincinnati Bengals caused the biggest shake-up when it came to predictions and how the season would pan out for them. Although many said that they would be an improved team, they blew that prediction out of the water. Ranked incredibly low down the pecking order when it comes to who would make it to the Super Bowl, this team proved sportsbooks and experts all over the country – if not the world – wrong! The Bengals made it all the way to the Super Bowl to go head-to-head with the Rams, who were undoubtedly higher up the list than them – and although they didn’t win, the margin was tight – as the LA team pipped them to the win by just 3 points. A team that was understated but proved everyone wrong.

Liverpool’s loss to Nottingham Forest

On the 22^nd of October this year, Nottingham Forest welcomed Liverpool to the City Ground. Last season, Liverpool were highflyers, and contenders for winning the Premier League, so it’s safe to say that teams coming up against them this season may have been worried about the onslaught such a skilled team could unleash – especially on a newly promoted Nottingham Forest. However, the 22/23 season didn’t get off to a great start for the Liverpudlian side. After winning 9-0 against Bournemouth in August, the team couldn’t seem to keep up the momentum, drawing with Brighton and losing to Arsenal in the weeks proceeding. Coming up against Nottingham, fans would not have been expecting a 1-0 win for Forest, after a 55th-minute goal from Awoniyi – especially with Nottingham only having 24% possession throughout the whole game! 

Brentford’s victory over Manchester United 

On the 13^th of August, we saw Man Utd head to the Gtech Community Stadium to take on the Bees in one of the first Premier League matches of the season. But little did we know what an action-packed game it would turn out to be. Manchester were facing a tumultuous time before the end of the 21/22 season, but with a new manager getting stuck in, fans were keen to see if they could start off on the right foot. A ruthless attack from the Brentford side in the first half saw 4 Brentford goals in the back of the net, one from Dasilva in the 10^th minute. Whilst the second half was less eventful, there was a shot for Eriksen to try and claw back a consolation goal for the side. Brentford managed to keep a clean sheet, sending Manchester United to the bottom of the table. A truly historic, and unforgettable day for both teams. 

Liverpool’s late winner at St. James 

Another Liverpool highlight making it into the list, this time as they faced Newcastle on the 31^st of August. Again, if we’re basing opinions on last season, this match could be hard to predict, with Newcastle growing stronger. They had a new addition to the team in this particular match, Alexander Isak, signed from Real Sociedad, and fans were eager to see how the Swede would slot into the team as a striker. However, Liverpool still remain one of the strongest teams in the league, and there is no denying that.

 Approaching the end of the first half, new signing Isak scored for Newcastle, sending them into the lead. But the joy was soon to be over, as a goal from Roberto Firmino took Liverpool level. But this is when it all got a bit controversial. Both teams were level on goals as 90 minutes approached, to which 5 extra minutes were added. Newcastle had further injuries throughout the added minutes which found the teams playing 3 minutes more – where Liverpool’s Carvalho slotted a goal into the net in the 98^th minute. Newcastle fans felt understandably cheated by this, whilst Liverpool couldn’t quite believe their luck. 

Thomas Tuchel Sacked from Chelsea 

When it comes to shocks, this is one of the biggest, and not many of us can say we saw this one coming. After being appointed by Chelsea in 2021 and winning the Champions League with the team – the club parted ways with Thomas Tuchel in September 2022 after just a year at the club. Parting ways with the manager came approximately 24 hours after Chelsea were defeated by Croatian team Dinamo Zagreb. Fans and those of us that follow the premier league were left confused by the sacking. Chelsea had a bumpy start to the 2022/23 season with only a handful of wins. It has been said that Tuchel parted ways with the team as they didn’t share the same views, and the team needed a change with it came to collaboration. Chelsea then went on to poach Graham Potter from fellow PL side, Brighton. 

Leeds’s victory over Chelsea 

Another shock that we saw at the start of the season was a game between Northern side Leeds, and Londoners Chelsea, who travelled North to Elland Road on the 21^st of August this year. The game was one of the most exciting we’ve seen in a while – as you’d be expecting Chelsea to take the win against Leeds, who have been anything but consistent in the past! Brenden Aaronson opened the scoring at 33 minutes for Leeds, closely followed by Rodrigo 5 minutes after. Giving Leeds a 2-0 advantage. The third goal from Jack Harrison at 69 minutes sealed the deal for Leeds, but it wasn’t over yet. In the 84^th minute, Kalidou Koulibaly received a second yellow card for a foul, resulting in a red and getting him sent off! A 3-0 win for Leeds, and a game that Chelsea would rather forget.
