ESL announces changes to the format of IEM Katowice Major

ESL has announced that it would be changing the format for the upcoming Major to be held in Katowice in February, by introducing a seeding system for the matchups in the Swiss system.

In a move that will be welcomed by analysts and fans alike, the new format will match the highest seeded team with the lowest seeded team for the first match in the Swiss system, with the seedings being decided by an ELO rating, like the one used in IEM Chicago last year.

This will ensure that only deserving teams will make through to the playoffs, as the likelihood of 2 top teams battling for 1 spot is greatly reduced.

โ€œThe Swiss system at prior Majors would sometimes allow comparable teams to have much harder or much easier opponents on their way to advance or exit the tournament,โ€ ESL said.

โ€œLive seeding will help prevent such situations and also-self-correct differences in perceived form and actual performance. If the number 16 seed defeats the number one seed, that suggests that the number 16 team is not yet number one, but probably a bit better than their seeding and vice versa.โ€

Another big change to the format is that unlike previous Swiss System Tournaments, where there were best of 3 matches in only the 5th Round at a score of 2-2, this time there will be Best of 3 Matches for Qualification and Elimination changes. This effectively increases the number of Best of 3โ€™s and the uncertainty and luck that comes with a one-off, with 2-0,2-1,1-2,0-2 and 2-2 matches all being best of 3โ€™s.

ESL explained this decision by saying

Ultimately, if we are testing the champion in a best-of-three series, then we should be testing for potential champions for the ability to win a best-of-three before they get to the Champions Stage,

Best-of-three elimination series were introduced to minimize the influence of random factors in teams getting knocked out and to allow lower-ranked teams to gain valuable international experience.

Gujarat government issues notice to ban students from playing PUBG

3

PUBG Mobile has caught by storm the interest of millions of Indians, so much so that its addiction has caught the attention of the Gujarat government, who have issued a circular asking school to ban students from playing PUBG Mobile during school hours.

The circular, directed at the District Primary Education Officers of Gujarat, was issued by Gujaratโ€™s Primary Education Department, and stated that the addiction to the multiplayer game was “adversely affecting their studies”.

Chairperson of the Gujarat child rights body, Jagruti Pandya, has stated to the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) to issue a recommendation to ban PUBG in the entire state. Jagruti Pandya stated,

The NCPCR had sent a letter to all the states and recommended a ban on the game. All the states are required to implement it. Looking at the negative effects of the game, we had recently sent a letter to the state government recommending a ban on the game.

The popularity of PUBG is such that it has already been downloaded 100 million times on the play store itself, with over 10 million daily active players. It has overtaken YouTube as the 2nd most download app, and India is just behind USA as the most active user base. All these factors, along with a concerning report by Quartz India stating that an average player plays the game for about 8 hours a week, has been the main reason for this move.

G2 announces new PUBG Roster consisting of ex PENTA Team

The announcement comes a month after they disbanded their former lineup, and have since acquired the entire roster of PENTA Esports, who finished 2nd in the PEL Qualifier in December 2018.

This means that Alexander โ€œCaintโ€ Syukrin,ย Christian โ€œItzz_ChrizZโ€ Blank,ย Magnus โ€œudyRRโ€ Hartmann, and Rene โ€œBraexcoโ€ Rehling will play under the Spanish organisation.

โ€œIt is a big honor for me to represent such an organization as G2 Esports. Our goal is to reach our potential on every single playday, to stay on the top of the leaderboards, and successfully qualify to Global Events,โ€ said Caint in G2โ€s announcement.

G2 CEOย Carlos โ€˜oceloteโ€™ Rodriguez said

The moment we identified the opportunity to build the strongest PUBG team in the world, we jumped on it. They are our first fully German line-up which is amazing and a great representation of the local talent available here. Theyโ€™re set for success and will take the trophy home.

The announcement comes as a much-needed boost to the PUBG scene as the declining popularity has caused many organisations, including OpTic Gaming and Evil Geniuses to drop their roster, and there has been a shift towards other Battle Royale games like Fortnite.

The all-German time is set to begin their journey at the PUBG Europe League by StarLadder featuring a โ‚ฌ1,000,000 prize pool.

Texas Esports aims to sell its stake in OpTic Gaming

2

Texas Esports, one of the major stake holders of Dallas-based Infinite Esports and Entertainment, is meaning to move its stake in the organization for in any event $150 million (ยฃ117 million).

In November 2017, it was reported that Texas Rangers co-proprietor Neil Leibman had gained OpTic Gaming. Soon after, its parent organization Infinite Esports and Entertainment set up a suite of supporting organizations for the association.

This included creation arm No Scope Media, associations arm Triggerfish, dress brand Third Label (later securing Sector Six), foundation arm GG Esports Academy (GGEA), and a wellness arm known as Innovative Performance Institute (IPI). These organizations have either moved far from the organization or have been closed down totally.

Its occasion association organization NGAGE Esports, which possesses Esports Stadium Arlington in association with the Texan city, has been moved to Esports Venues, LLC, a different organization additionally claimed by Leibman.

Simply a week ago, Infinite Esports and Entertainment had an inside rebuilding that saw some of its workers exchanged to OpTic Gaming or Houston Outlaws โ€“ a move that apparently makes the corporate overhead of the parent organization lighter.

s1mple tops HLTV Top 20 players list for 2018; device, Niko round out the top three

Itโ€™s that time of the year again, when Counter-Strike Global Offensive fans get excited to see who has made it to the Top 20 list made by HLTV. The 2018 edition was a highly anticipated one, with fans eagerly waiting to see just how much the landscape of the Top 20 rankings had changed in the space of a year.

HLTV have a unique way of revealing the Top 20, starting backwards revealing one player each day. But, they added another cool feature, perhaps owing to the immense speculation as to who among device and s1mple will bag the #1 spot. HLTV decided to reveal #1 and #2 on the same day, which added to the anticipation among the CSGO fans.

But, at the end of the day, the community was happy as HLTV crowned s1mple as the best player for 2018, with the Natus Vincere AWPer boasting insane statistics throughout the calendar, especially in BIG events.

device was a close second, despite having more MVPs than s1mple and bagging more team honours as well. Niko came third and was undoubtedly a step ahead of electronic, who was a positive surprise for Natus Vincere fans after his addition to the roster.

The entire Astralis roster made the Top 20 rankings, with four of them in the top 10 – dupreeh (5), Magisk (7), gla1ve (8), Xypn9x (13).

There was just one North American player in the Top 10, with Liquid star NAF coming in sixth, owing to his impressive fragging power at Renegades and eventually, Liquid throughout the calendar.

But, there was more cheer for North American fans, with as many as four players from the region making it to the top 20, which is a record for the region.

Not as big of a surprise, but mousesports had three players in the top 20 but none in the top 10, perhaps showing just how consistent the team had been without actually being able to break into the top 3.

While Astralis are the most represented organisation within the top 20, with all of their players making the list, organisations like Faze, mousesports, and Liquid are close behind with three of their players on the list, showing just how dominant they have been within the CSGO scene in 2018.

Natus Vincere had just two, with both of them in the top 5, showing just how hard the duo have had to carry the team in order to achieve the success they did in 2018. Nine teams were represented in the top 20 list, making it one of the most diverse lists in the history of HLTV rankings.

The players usually call out a name they believe will make the top 20 in 2019. Newly acquired Optic star refrezh was the most named among the players, with sergej close behind. Interestingly, XANTARES was named just one, despite recently moving to BIG and having impressed everyone already over the last couple of years.

There are a few players that will feel hard done by HLTV, with the likes of Stewie2k, Tarik and no one from NRG making the list, despite a confirmation that nahtE was on the cusp of making it to the top 20, along with Natus Vincere rifler Flamie.

It will surely be intriguing to see how 2019 pans out for s1mple, device, Niko and the rest of the stars that made the list.
