North, consistency and their journey towards Standard deviation

0

Billed as the team to test Astralis and their supremacy within the Danish scene when formed, saying that North have underperformed or not fulfilled the expectations would be an understatement. The fate of the two Danish powerhouses have changed so dramatically that they could have been plotted on the extreme opposites of the spectrum that is the Counter Strike Global Offensive scene.

Astralis are now the champions of the scene and have removed the โ€˜chokersโ€™ tag from them with aplomb. North however, plummeted into a spiral of inconsistency they are still trying to dig their way out of. MSL tried to steer the ship in a positive direction. But, the IGLโ€™s ways were deemed either too rigid or extremely risky at times; one could point towards their roster with mertz, wherein MSL devised a plan of leaving mertz alone at B in almost all the rounds on the CT side of Inferno while the other 4 players did not even try to push or gather information.

MSL was benched after perhaps the most damning evidence of the inconsistency under his leadership. Right after winning Dreamhack Masters Stockholm 2018 in fantastic fashion beating teams like mousesports and Navi and overcoming local rivals Astralis, North plummeted to a quick exit from the FACEIT Major 2018 Main Qualifiers, thus not even getting to the New Legends Stage.

cadian was brought in, seeing his success with Rogue. The IGLโ€™s arrival has shown a bit of improvement in form in terms of the overall map record. But, the inconsistency has somehow remained.

After a top-four finish at the ECS Season 6 Finals, North were one of the first teams to bow out of the ESL Pro League Season 8 Finals. But, there has been steady progress since. The roles seem to have finally been put into place and it seems to be suiting the players that are currently part of the roster.

While they failed to land a spot in the ESL Pro League Season 9 Finals with losses against mousesports and Optic, North managed to win ECS Season 7 Week 2, which qualifies them for the ECS Season 7 Finals.

valdeโ€™s form has improved and cadian has performed better on the server compared to his predecessor MSL, which is perhaps the reason of Northโ€™s upturn in fortunes.

By no means are North not equipped to go toe-to-toe with the best of teams, if only for a bit more rigidity in terms of results.

Consistency is what the North lineup seems to be petering towards. But, after the tapering results, they have shown over the course of the last year or so, it is a long road before they are finally considered consistent enough to be labelled a threat to the other top teams in the CSGO ecosystem.

The North remembers. Now they must improve.

Polish President considers esports as a sport and extends support for esport scene

0

Polish president Andrzej Duda, in a press conference, said that โ€œEsports without a doubt can be considered sports.โ€ The press conference was addressed by the president himself to announce the eight Polish FIFA representative for the upcoming FIFA eWorld Cup 2019.ย  The representatives are included under the project name National Team of Esport and more players would be added later.

The president later in a speech said (translated on Google translate) that

Young people who are at the forefront of something that is very modern, which is very important today. This is personal development, but also technological development at the highest world level. Is this useful? This is very useful. There are many useful skills that can later be used for various purposes in adult, serious life. Especially that gentlemen are also improving themselves in a personal way, some of the men finished their studies, hello learn. They are constantly evolving, so this is a combination of two very important elements – personal development with development in the technical and sports sense.

Later he spoke in a discussion about why he considers esport as a sport โ€“ โ€œcan we say that esport is a sport? If we can say that chess is a sport, if we can say that the sports bridge is a sport, then the esport, which develops the manual skills, develops the player’s reflexes, undoubtedly can also be included in sportsโ€. Later he went on to praise how FIFA doesnโ€™t associate with anything negative and doesnโ€™t evoke bad behaviour among the younger generations โ€“ โ€œFIFA, where you play online or on a football console, is an absolutely uncontroversial game. There is no controversy here, no elements that could be negatively perceived in any way. I am happy, therefore, that this area will be promoted, the more so because football is something that probably most of the boys in Poland are very close to.โ€

With esports getting more support from major political powers across the globe, more people have started to see esports as regular sports and have extended support for the same. With esports gaining traction and popularity among the different populace, the esport division is set to witness new highs and might even be included officially as a sport in The Olympics.

MPL CEO Sai Srinivas talks about his experience of managing one of the most valuable mobile esports platforms in India

Last year, something miraculous happened in mobile esports. Sai Srinivas Kiran G, a graduate from IIT Kanpur bred with an entrepreneur’s mind stepped up to change the mobile gaming scenario once and for all. He along with his friend, Shubham Malhotra, an alumnus of BITS Goa came up with an idea of a digital platform which can enlist and host games from various third-party app developers onto a single app. And with this idea, Mobile Premier League was born.

Today, a year later MPL boasts over 30 million registered users who on a daily basis enjoy a variety of fun arcade as well as rewarding games such as chess, trivia, carrom, cricket and that too all on a singular app. MPL was backed by help from prominent investors like Go Ventures, Times of India, Sequoia capitals which all helped MPL reach where it stands today resolute and unshakeable

We sat down with the co-founder of MPL Sai Srinivas Kiran G as he shares his experience of managing one of the most valuable mobile esports platform in India, as well as the challenges and the road ahead for MPL.

Full interview:

Q. MPL has seen phenomenal growth in just a couple of years with a $35M investment at the start of this year. What is the story behind this unprecedented growth?

I think it is about finding a market which a lot of people didnโ€™t think existed. Everybody talks about esports and competitive gaming outside of India but when it comes to India people usually have a very give up look on their faces and the reason for that being nothing happens in India. That because they are slamming a business model from first world countries onto the Indian market and they donโ€™t realize if Indians want it in the same way. We here at MPL donโ€™t judge our customers, we give them what they want and not what first world country describes as esport. We believe monetizing peopleโ€™s skills is a great way to drive traction. We gave the people what they wanted and they liked it, thus our company took off after the first 5-6 months.

Q. You have roped in huge ambassadors like Virat Kohli and partnered with Cricbuzz in the latest season of IPL. How has the mainstream media help you grow your user base?

Mainstream media is helpful but to be honest for us the real growth came from the lesser-known influencers. Virat is helpless in a big way to establish our brand and to establish the fact that you should try our company, but he is very helpful in getting our brand out there. The lesser-known influencers like YouTubers helped in our growth immensely.

Q. How much has the ease of access to the internet and smartphones for the average user helped you?

100%. There is nothing without the internet. It is like water for our business. If there was no Internet, I donโ€™t think we would be talking here. The three things that are most important for the gaming industry are good and cheap devices, good connectivity and payment. All of which came to India 2-3 years ago and the industry started booming.

Q. We have seen over 35 games on the platform, some of which are very casual and arcade-like. What is the thinking with incorporating so many games and do you have an active user base for niche games like maybe a Fruit Dart or Kite Up?

As people become gamers, they tend to incline towards the complicated ones. But the simpler the game is, the more people tend to play it given the fact that it is less intimidating. As I said, we donโ€™t judge our customers, if they want to play Fruit Dash we let them. Telling customers what to do has been a problem for India for a long time. The customers want to play and earn money and we are here to help them, not the tell them what to do.

Q. In the online gaming space we have seen a huge market being formed, with players like Dream 11 also offering something similar like you do. How would you say you are different from then and who are your main competitors in this space?

I think Dream 11 does fantasy and they have been doing it for a while. Fantasy is a small part of us. We are like a supermarket of games where fantasy is also an option. The reason it is so popular because we advertised it during IPL but personally I prefer other games over it.

Q. The fantasy sports and virtual gambling industry in India is a very grey area, with no regulations as such on virtual currency or this industry in general. What do you think of regulations being set to protect the playersโ€™ best interests and what measures are you taking to eliminate fraudsters and cheaters?

I already gave you an insight into the measures we are taking to eliminate fraud. We are a part of the AIGF and IAMAI and the Rummy Federation as well. These organizations are helping us to develop the best practices, alongside the charter for esports.

Q. Do you have plans into getting in Traditional Esports and more conventional PC and Console games that already have a huge fan following?

We have a very clear philosophy, that is we stick to the devices that are accessible to everyone.

Q. As much as we attribute Fantasy Games to skill, there is a significant level of Luck required for someone to win. How can we ensure that it is being played fairly and there are no conflicts of interest or no scenarios of say โ€œfixingโ€ happening on a larger scale?

We have understood the practices of wrongdoing in this industry that happens at the fundamental level. And at that level, we have robust TNCs with anti-money laundering policies, anti-collusion policies and defraud policies. On top of that, we have a KYC procedure where we ask for government-issued identification so that we know who our customers exactly are. Services like PayTM and UPI which are integrated into our system also have a KYC at their backhand to assist us in this process. Anti-hacking algorithms and software are also invigilating for potential fraud. These fights are very dynamic, hackers get better every day and we try to keep the industry level security for our platform so that we get as close to perfection as possible.

Astralis maintains the top spot for a year

1

The latest HLTV Rankings have confirmed that Astralis have maintained their top spot for a whole year without being displaced- with an unassailable lead of over 400 points over NA rivals Liquid.

The 22nd April ranking update- which put the Danish side at 1000 points, confirmed the long-standing belief of the dominance of Astralis in this era, which has seen them win 15 of the 22 premier events they attended.

After the addition of Magisk in early 2018, there was scepticism whether he would be able to live up to his potential in a team like Astralis. But any initial doubts of the move were dispelled after a monstrous second half of the year- which saw them win the Intel Grand Slam Title and $1 million, having won 4 of the 10 Intel sponsored events which included ESL and Dreamhack tournaments.

Perhaps what was the most satisfying for the squad, was the fact that they won back to back Majors at London and Katowice which had put them in the history books. Their absolute ruthlessness was in doubt at Blast Pro Series Miami recently, but that is seen as just a blip in an otherwise dominant era.

Iโ€™ve been really glad to be part of coL for the past 5 months and would like to thank both the team and the organization for everything. Chinaโ€™s new gaming rules bans poker, blood and imperial scheme genre games

0

In the latest round of news coming from Chinaโ€™s gaming industry, the newly formed State Administration of Press and Publication introduced new restrictions and requirements for games entering the Chinese market. These new set of restrictions includes banning games with Blood, gambling (poker and Mojang) and Imperial scheme. The administration also capped a number of games allowed annually in the market. The State administration believes all these restrictions will help curb the influx of gambling problems in the younger population and the wrong depiction of Chinaโ€™s past in games.

This news comes after the Chinese government started accepting licenses for new games after they halted the review process for 9-months. With more companies applying for approval these new rules come as a hindrance.

With the huge population of China, the country generates US $30 billion alone from video games sales, which will likely rise in 2019. Although the market cap could have been bigger but the uncertainty has always kept big developers of the market. With these new rules coming in hot, the entry to market did get easier but with heavy censorship.

Before developers used to change colour of textures and release the game, but that wonโ€™t work now. With new restrictions the developers need to present detailed scripts, screenshots and features to help curb gameplay addiction and overspending of money on game by younger population.

But all these changes do come as positive for companies such as Nintendo, whoโ€™s content is more focused towards kids and toddlers. With the recent news of Tencent receiving approval to start selling Nintendo Switch in China and the new approval guidelines, Nintendo will be expecting in increased sales and market reach.
