Two Boys that bonded over gaming are now fighting cancer together

0

Due to COVID-19 pandemic, people all over the world are in isolation and maintaining social distancing. During this time, video and online games have emerged out to become one of the best distractions & as a means of killing the time during the lockdown period. But for 2 young boys out there named Zac Carter and Carson Dimsdale, video games are more like a lifeline.

Before his 11th birthday, Zac was diagnosed with two separate cancers and was being taken to the recovery room after yet another surgery. He would play video games after such surgeries to distract himself. Zac owns a Nintendo Switch and would play it all day and would even decline any kind of anti-anxiety medication as it made him too groggy to play. He said, “It helps me take my mind off everything, it does distract me a lot.”

In a way, gaming introduced Zac to one of his best friends Carson. Zac was playing on his Nintendo at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis where eight-year-old Carson Dimsdale was wheeled in. The parents of these two boys met in a waiting room and soon the boys met and bonded over gaming.

In a video interview Carson said, “I feel like we’re brothers from two different families and the feeling is mutual.” In reply Zac mentioned that, “He’s really nice and I love playing games with him, and that he thinks of Carson as his little brother.” Zac’s mother would call Carson as her other son whereas Carson’s father terms both of them as the best buds.

Despite a gap of 2 years and the fact that they live across the country from one another, their friendship emerged and grew stronger because of the common love they shared for gaming. The boys surely have strength and determination in them as they battle cancer.

Zac’s mother recalled the story when the tumour in one of Zac’s leg showed up on his other leg as well and amputation was the only choice they had. She told how Zac reacted by saying that, “Atleast it’s not my arms, so I can still play my video games.” Coming to Carson, he was diagnosed with Acute Myleoid Leukemia in 2016 and has been fighting since then.

The joy of both these boys is sparked by gaming, and games like Animal Crossing, Minecraft, Roblox, Super Mario Maker, Smash Bros, Zelda, Fortnite and Pokemon being their most favourite games that they play together for up to a stretch of 6 hours or even more.

Dota 2 team suspended from WePlay! Pushka League for alleged match fixing

Match-fixing in esports seems to know no end as another such incident has recently surfaced in WePlay! Pushka League for Dota 2.

A match between two teams Cyber Legacy and CyberTRAKTOR was held in the league on April 26th. Three days later on April 29, WePlay! has officially released a statement through their website saying that the match might not have been played fair and square.

The BO3 series between the two teams saw Cyber Legacy win it 2-0. However, when WePlay! decided to investigate the games, they came to a conclusion that members of CyberTRAKTOR might have been involved in betting on the match to make some easy money.

They said in the post, “Our esports department and the analysts of WePlay! Pushka League carefully examined the matches and came to the conclusion that Cyber TRAKTOR, with a high degree of probability, made bets on some intermediate results of their matches. At this time, we are gathering evidence and investigating the situation.”

They came to a decision that CyberTRAKTOR will be prohibited in participating in further games till clarification of the circumstances.

They further added, “We encourage Cyber TRAKTOR also to conduct an internal investigation and publicly share its results if the information about trying to earn on intermediate results is confirmed.”

The blog post also included a statement from Vitaliy “Nexius” Bozhko – WePlay! Esports Lead Esports Manager.

The statement said, “One of the main reasons for the existence of Division 2 in WePlay! Pushka League is the support of talented players who have not yet been discovered. For the participants, even if they are not yet ready to take the big stage, the official matches serve as an incentive to improve and work on themselves. Unfortunately, no one is safe from the fact that a player or an entire team uses this opportunity to try and earn easy money. We will announce punishments for the perpetrators when we fully understand the situation.”

It goes without saying that this isn’t the first case of match fixing in esports, or even Dota 2. Match fixing is a punishable offense regardless and players involved with it in the past have not only been permanently banned from the game, but have been arrested too on rare occasions.

Later after the match, Riyan spoke with Sportskeeda in an interview, where the cricketer revealed that he was surprised that the game stretched all the way down to the last map. He also said that while he just played for fun, he ended up performing better than his own expectations.

The Rajasthan Royals Star also revealed that he prefers CSGO over other popular games like PUBG and Free Fire. According to him, PUBG and FreeFire are well thought and good games but nothing comes close to CSGO for him. The youngster spoke about how Games like Counter-Strike have helped him in playing better cricket as well. According to him, a game of CSGO feels just like Cricket, one part of his mind remains focused at the enemies aka fielders while the other part focuses upon the 1v1 aka bowler and the match situation at hand.

Later in the interview, Riyan Parag also shared that just like him, his Rajasthan Royals teammate Jofra Archer also likes playing online games and added that he wants to challenge Archer in a game of CounterStrike. Among other Indian cricketers, Riyan also challenged Chennai Super Kings pacer, Shardul Thakur.

Dubai Police recently issued an advisory and urged families to be extra careful when playing online video games. The advisory comes in light of massive data leaks and privacy breaches which have been linked to online video games.

In its tweet, the Dubai Police quoted, “Most “Free” online games make profit through collecting and exploiting personal information thus violating your privacy, so be careful and spread awareness among your family members.”

This advisory is issued as a counter measure to potential breach of privacy and exposure of personal data online. Many of the popular online video games like Call of Duty Mobile, PUBG Mobile, Garena Free Fire and Mobile Legends: Bang Bang are entirely free to play games but do have access to a lot of data on our mobile phones.

In this world of digital footprints, we must be highly aware about our personal data and privacy because nothing remains hidden on the internet.

CSGO surpasses Fortnite in prize money to reclaim its No. 2 spot

If you’ve been following us for a while, you’re probably aware of the time Fortnite overtook CSGO in esports earnings. Back then Fortnite was still a young esport and it being able to surpass CSGO – a well established title in the world of esports – caught many esports enthusiasts off-guard. However, Fortnite couldn’t enjoy the lead for long as it appears that CSGO has reclaimed its #2 spot on the charts within months of losing it.

According to esports earnings, CSGO now holds over a 10 million dollar lead to Fortnite in terms of prize money, bouncing back from the $200k deficit it had back in September 2019. The prize money of the Valve title now stands at an estimated 95,190,049$ while the Epic Games battle royale lags behind at $85,164,796.

It’s undeniable that Valve has shown CSGO a lot of love recently. From constant updates including game improvements and weapon fixes to a new operation and lots of new skins, CSGO has seen it all in the last few months. The community has also reciprocated the love, resulting in an unprecedented increase in playerbase and consequently the prize money of the game.

While CSGO and Fortnite battle it out for the #2 spot, Dota 2 still stands firm at top of the chart with a prize pool of over 223 million dollars, which is heavily influenced by The International – the crowd funded annual tournament for the MOBA by Valve. For reference, The International 2019 single-handedly enjoyed a prize pool of over 34 million dollars.
