Xbox disc drive supply problems are getting worse, according to a new report from Digital Foundry. The outlet has corroborated an earlier report that said the global supply chain for optical disc drive components is collapsing.
Digital Foundry said the shortage is becoming “problematic” for Microsoft, since the company relies on outside suppliers for optical drives. Based on this, the outlet believes Microsoft’s next-generation console, codenamed Project Helix, will almost certainly launch without a disc drive. Xbox Disc Drive Supply Chain Collapsing, Reports Say
Reports revealed that the entire supply chain for components used to build optical disc drives is shrinking, as manufacturers shift assembly lines away from the tech.
The core issue is falling demand. Fewer companies still need optical drives now that PCs, TVs, and most entertainment devices have moved on from DVD and Blu-ray players. That leaves consoles like Xbox and PlayStation as some of the last major buyers, which makes it harder and more expensive for manufacturers to source the parts.
Microsoft has not made an official statement on whether Project Helix will include a disc drive. However, previous reports revealed that Microsoft was already leaning toward dropping the drive entirely. The shrinking supply chain appears to support that direction rather than change it.
PlayStation’s Disc Exit Adds Context
Sony has already committed to a digital-only future for new PlayStation releases. In a statement on the PlayStation Blog, the company confirmed that physical disc production for all new PlayStation games will stop from January 2028.
Sony said the shift reflects how players already prefer to buy games, adding that digital demand “significantly outpaces physical discs.” Games released before January 2028 are not affected and will remain available on disc.
It is still unclear if the PlayStation 6 will support an optional external disc drive, similar to certain PS5 models. Sony has not detailed hardware plans beyond the 2028 production cutoff.
What This Means for Xbox Project Helix
With PlayStation already moving away from discs and the supply chain for drive components shrinking further, Xbox appears to be following a similar path. Neither Microsoft nor Digital Foundry has confirmed a final decision on Project Helix’s hardware, but current reporting points toward a console without a built-in disc drive.
Microsoft recently rolled out a Disc-to-Digital program for Xbox, letting players convert physical game libraries into digital entitlements. That move lines up with a future where physical media plays a smaller role across both major console platforms.
