PS5 emulation now works on a console for the first time. A modder named Devran Cosmo Uenal has taken KytyPS5, an open-source PlayStation 5 emulator for PC, and ported it to the Xbox Series X. He calls the port PS5X. It runs through Xbox Developer Mode, and a small number of PS5 builds now boot on Microsoft’s hardware.
The project is still early, and nobody can download it yet. Here is what works, what doesn’t, and how the Xbox manages to run PlayStation code at all.
What Is PS5X?
PS5X is a port of KytyPS5, which was built for Windows, Linux and Apple Silicon Macs. Uenal moved that code onto the Xbox Series X. He describes it as a research project aimed at PS5 homebrew and at backups of games people legally own. He has also said he used AI tools while developing it.
The build does not include any Sony firmware or decryption keys. Most emulation projects follow this same rule so that they stay on safer legal ground.
Which PS5 Games Run on Xbox Series X?
Four PS5 builds currently start on the console:
| Game | Status on PS5X | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Quake II | Boots and plays | Only title shown with performance footage |
| GEX Trilogy | Boots | No performance footage released |
| Hellboy: Web of Wyrd | Boots | No performance footage released |
| Marvel Cosmic Invasion | Boots | No performance footage released |
BGR reports that the developer is also testing Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time, Grand Theft Auto 5 and Gran Turismo 7. None of those are confirmed as playable yet.
All four working games also came out on other platforms, which means no PS5 exclusive runs on the Xbox so far.
PS5X Performance: How Well Does It Run?
Quake II is the only game with public footage. In that footage the frame rate moves between about 20 and 45 FPS, and it sometimes drops below 20. Input lag is easy to notice. The Xbox controller works in all four games, and sound works in some of them.
The PC version of KytyPS5 has trouble with heavier games too. On PC, titles like Astro Bot and Demon’s Souls fall into single-digit frame rates.
Why PS5 Emulation Is Harder on Xbox
The main problem is the graphics layer. KytyPS5 renders through Vulkan, a cross-platform graphics API, and the Xbox Series X does not support Vulkan. It uses DirectX 12, so PS5X has to translate the emulator’s graphics work into DirectX.
That translation step causes two problems:
- Compatibility: Some rendering features don’t carry over cleanly, so fewer games boot.
- Performance: The extra work lowers frame rates on hardware that is already emulating a different console.
Fixes to the PC version’s Vulkan renderer also don’t reach the Xbox port automatically. Each improvement has to be adapted separately.
How PS5X Runs: Xbox Developer Mode Explained
PS5X runs only in Developer Mode. This is not a jailbreak or a hack. Microsoft built the mode so developers could test software on regular retail consoles. According to Microsoft’s Developer Mode documentation, you need three things to turn it on:
- The Xbox Dev Mode app from the Microsoft Store
- A Microsoft Partner Center app developer account
- An activation code entered on the Partner Center website
Switching modes will not brick the console, and you can go back to Retail Mode at any time. Retail games and apps don’t run while the console is in Developer Mode, though. Retro gamers have used the same mode for years to run emulators such as RetroArch on Xbox. Microsoft has been pushing its platform onto more hardware as well, including its recent Xbox mode for Windows 11 PCs.
Is PS5 Emulation Legal?
Emulators are generally legal in most regions, as long as they don’t contain copyrighted code. PS5X leaves out Sony’s firmware and keys for exactly that reason. Downloading PS5 games you don’t own is a different case: that counts as piracy.
Sony has sent takedown requests to modding and emulation projects before, and it could still take action against PS5X. The debate over whether players can keep the games they buy has also grown this year. Sony has changed how PS5 physical discs are labelled, and a PS3 update left some older consoles stuck. Both stories feed the game preservation argument that emulation projects often cite.
Can You Download PS5X?
No. There is no public release, no download link and no official repository for the Xbox port. Uenal has shared the project only through a video demo and social media posts.
What Comes Next for PS5 Emulation
PS5X shows that PlayStation 5 code can run on another company’s console. It is still far from running big PS5 exclusives at playable speeds. Progress on the Xbox depends on two things: better DirectX translation, and improvements to KytyPS5 itself. Emulating a current-generation console usually takes years of work before most of its library becomes playable.
