GTA 6 Confirms On Demand Podcasts and Lets Players Listen to Radio While Walking

  • Six stations have been revealed, including returning Vice City favourite Flash FM, Cocoteo FM and Dirty South Classics.

Rockstar Games has confirmed that GTA 6 will feature on-demand podcasts and allow players to listen to radio stations outside vehicles using smartphone-connected headphones and earbuds, alongside six newly revealed radio stations.

Grand Theft Auto 6 is making one of the biggest changes to its in-game music system in the franchise’s history, allowing players to listen to radio stations and on-demand podcasts even when they are not driving.

Rockstar Games confirmed the feature in a new announcement on October 8, revealing that protagonists Jason and Lucia will be able to listen to music and podcasts while travelling through Leonida on foot, using headphones and earbuds connected to their in-game smartphones.

The announcement also introduces six radio stations, ranging from Latin music and Southern hip-hop to heavy metal, African music and country, while bringing back Flash FM, one of the most recognisable stations from the original Vice City.

For a series whose radio stations have helped define its atmosphere since the early Grand Theft Auto games, the ability to carry that experience beyond a vehicle represents a significant change in how players will interact with the open world.

GTA 6 confirms on-demand podcasts for the first time

Perhaps the most interesting part of Rockstar’s announcement is the introduction of an on-demand podcast system, a feature that takes the franchise’s long-standing tradition of fictional radio programming into a format familiar to modern smartphone users.

Unlike conventional radio broadcasts, on-demand podcasts suggest that players will have greater control over when they listen to particular programmes rather than relying entirely on whatever is playing on a station at that moment.

Rockstar has not yet detailed the complete podcast catalogue, individual programme names, episode lengths or whether players will be able to pause and resume episodes across gameplay sessions. The announcement nevertheless establishes that podcasts will exist as a separate listening experience beyond Leonida’s terrestrial radio stations.

Readers can find the announcement through Rockstar Games’ official GTA 6 music and radio reveal.

Players can finally listen to GTA radio while walking

The more consequential gameplay change may be the decision to make radio programming accessible outside vehicles.

Traditionally, Grand Theft Auto’s radio experience has been closely associated with driving. Players entered a vehicle, selected a station and listened to music, fictional advertisements or talk-radio programming while navigating the city.

GTA 6 changes that arrangement by introducing headphones and earbuds connected to Jason and Lucia’s smartphones, allowing radio and podcasts to accompany them while walking through Leonida.

The feature could substantially change the atmosphere of ordinary exploration. Players travelling along Vice City’s beaches, walking through crowded neighbourhoods or exploring the state’s rural environments will no longer need to enter a vehicle simply to continue listening to their preferred station.

Rockstar has not yet explained how the listening system interacts with combat, dialogue, cutscenes or other gameplay activities, so the precise controls and limitations remain unknown.

All six GTA 6 radio stations revealed so far

Alongside the new listening features, Rockstar has revealed six stations that illustrate the musical range it is building around Vice City and the wider state of Leonida.

Cocoteo FMLatin music, including bachata, merengue, dembow and reggaetonEl Martillo and La Gata

The Chamber 106.6Classic heavy metalDJ Kerry and DJ Tom

Dirty South ClassicsSouthern rap and hip-hop classicsTrick and Trina

The six stations are not necessarily the complete GTA 6 radio lineup. Rockstar has presented them as an initial selection, leaving room for additional stations, presenters and music to be revealed.

Flash FM returns to Vice City in GTA 6

For longtime Grand Theft Auto players, the return of Flash FM may be the most immediately recognisable part of the announcement.

The station became closely associated with Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, where its selection of pop music contributed to the distinctive atmosphere of Rockstar’s fictional interpretation of 1980s Miami.

In GTA 6, Flash FM returns as a pop station hosted by Robyn and Alex, bringing a familiar name into the franchise’s modern-day version of Vice City.

The decision illustrates how Rockstar is balancing nostalgia with a considerably different setting. GTA 6 returns to Vice City, but its contemporary world, characters and culture are far removed from the 1980s backdrop of the original game.

GTA 6’s stations reflect the wider culture of Leonida

The other stations demonstrate how Rockstar is extending the musical identity of GTA 6 beyond Vice City itself.

Cocoteo FM focuses on modern Latin music, while AfroBank FM brings together African musical styles spanning older recordings and contemporary genres. Dirty South Classics concentrates on regional hip-hop, and The Chamber 106.6 introduces a dedicated heavy-metal presence.

Back Country Radio appears particularly connected to Leonida’s geography, with programming associated with areas including the Grassrivers and Port Gellhorn. Its announced format also includes fictional personalities and regional segments, continuing the series’ tradition of using radio presenters to develop the culture and humour of its open world.

That approach has historically been one of Grand Theft Auto’s strengths. Radio stations do more than provide background music; their presenters, advertisements, commentary and musical selections help establish the character of the fictional society surrounding the player.

GTA 6’s music system goes beyond traditional radio

The introduction of podcasts and portable listening also reflects how much music consumption has changed since Grand Theft Auto V launched in 2013.

Streaming platforms, wireless earbuds and on-demand audio have become routine parts of everyday life, while traditional radio remains only one of several ways people discover music and listen to spoken-word programming.

Rockstar’s decision to incorporate smartphone-connected audio into GTA 6 therefore feels consistent with the contemporary setting rather than simply adding another menu option.

It also creates opportunities for fictional podcasts to develop characters, satire and the wider culture of Leonida beyond what can be communicated through missions or conventional radio broadcasts.

Whether Rockstar uses the format for fictional interviews, true-crime satire, political commentary, celebrity culture or other programming remains to be seen. None of those podcast formats has yet been individually confirmed.

Rockstar is making music a major part of GTA 6’s launch

The new radio announcement follows Rockstar’s September reveal of Grand Theft Auto VI: The Album, a separate music release featuring 34 original tracks developed with Atlantic Records.

The album is scheduled to arrive alongside GTA 6 on November 19, 2026, forming another part of Rockstar’s unusually extensive musical rollout for the game.

The existence of the album does not establish that all 34 tracks will appear on GTA 6’s in-game radio stations, and Rockstar has not yet published a complete station-by-station playlist.

Nevertheless, the combination of an original soundtrack album, newly revealed stations, fictional presenters, portable radio and on-demand podcasts suggests that music and audio programming will occupy a particularly prominent place in the game’s wider world-building.

When does GTA 6 release?

Grand Theft Auto VI is scheduled to launch on November 19, 2026, for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.

The game follows Jason and Lucia through Vice City and the wider fictional state of Leonida, with Rockstar promising its most expansive interpretation of the Grand Theft Auto open world to date.

The radio announcement provides another example of how that expansion is extending into activities outside the central storyline. Players will be able to experience the game’s music and spoken-word programming while driving, exploring on foot or simply moving through Leonida’s everyday environments.

For a franchise whose soundtracks have remained memorable long after players completed their final missions, the decision to take radio outside the car may ultimately prove more consequential than it initially appears. GTA 6 is not simply introducing more music; it is changing when, where and how players can experience one of Grand Theft Auto’s most enduring features.
