Maharashtra Rewards Asian Games Esports Athletes – Historic Move for India

In a landmark decision, the Maharashtra government has taken a significant step towards recognizing Esports as a legitimate sporting discipline. The state’s Directorate of Sports and Youth Services has awarded INR 10 lakhs to each Esports athlete who represented India at the 2022 Asian Games in Hangzhou. This unprecedented move solidifies Maharashtra’s position as a pioneer in supporting the growth of Indian Esports.

Recipients of the reward include the Indian DOTA 2 team – Darshan Bata (captain), Krish Gupta, Ketan Goyal, and Shubham Goli – as well as League of Legends player Samarth Trivedi. The athletes expressed their heartfelt gratitude for the recognition and support.

“This is a huge moment for us and for Esports in India,” said Darshan Bata, captain of the DOTA 2 team. “Thank you to the Maharashtra government and the Esports Federation of India (ESFI) for believing in us.”

The 2022 Asian Games marked the first time Esports was included as a full medal event. India sent a strong contingent selected by the ESFI through nationwide qualifiers. The League of Legends team notably achieved a historic fifth-place finish.

This recognition by the Maharashtra government comes on the heels of India’s bronze medal win in DOTA 2 at the Commonwealth Esports Championships. It’s clear that India is making its mark on the global Esports stage.
