GTA 6 Can’t Break This Baldur’s Gate 3 and Clair Obscur GOTY Record

Grand Theft Auto 6 has not even been released yet, but one Game of the Year record is already mathematically beyond its reach.

Rockstar Games’ long-awaited GTA 6 launches on November 19, 2026, eight days after this year’s Golden Joystick Awards take place on November 11. That scheduling means GTA 6 cannot complete a same-season sweep of the five major Game of the Year awards — a rare achievement previously accomplished by Baldur’s Gate 3 and later matched by Clair Obscur: Expedition 33.

This does not mean GTA 6 cannot become one of the most decorated games of its generation, nor does it prevent Rockstar’s game from winning individual Game of the Year awards. Instead, its release date creates an unusual technicality: one particular awards-season record is impossible for GTA 6 to equal, regardless of how well the game is eventually received.

Why GTA 6 cannot complete the five-award GOTY sweep

The distinction revolves around five ceremonies that are commonly treated as the major Game of the Year awards: the Golden Joystick Awards, The Game Awards, the D.I.C.E. Awards, the Game Developers Choice Awards and the BAFTA Games Awards.

Winning Game of the Year at all five during the same awards season is exceptionally rare. Baldur’s Gate 3 accomplished the feat following its 2023 release, collecting the top honour at the Golden Joysticks and The Game Awards before completing its run through D.I.C.E., GDC and BAFTA in 2024.

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 subsequently repeated the achievement during the 2025-26 awards season, putting Sandfall Interactive’s RPG alongside Larian’s Baldur’s Gate 3 in a remarkably exclusive group.

GTA 6 cannot follow them in exactly the same way because the first ceremony in that sequence will already be over by the time Rockstar’s game becomes available.

The 44th Golden Joystick Awards will take place on November 11, while Rockstar has scheduled GTA 6 for November 19 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Public voting for most Golden Joystick categories begins on September 25 and ends on October 23, with Ultimate Game of the Year voting running from October 26 through October 30.

In other words, players will not even have access to GTA 6 when voting closes. The game is consequently ineligible for the 2026 Golden Joystick Awards.

GTA 6 could still win the Golden Joystick, just a year later

The scheduling quirk does not permanently exclude GTA 6 from the Golden Joysticks. Rockstar’s game can instead become eligible for the 2027 ceremony, meaning it could theoretically collect the Ultimate Game of the Year award approximately a year after launch. That is where the technical distinction becomes important. If GTA 6 were eventually to win Game of the Year honours from the Golden Joysticks, The Game Awards, D.I.C.E., GDC and BAFTA, Rockstar could still claim victories across the same five major organisations.

What it cannot do is win all five as part of one continuous awards season in the manner achieved by Baldur’s Gate 3 and Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. Whether that distinction matters to players is another question entirely, but for awards statistics it means the specific five-show sweep will remain unavailable to GTA 6 from the moment it launches.

GTA 6’s November 19 release creates other awards complications

The Golden Joysticks are the clearest example because their ceremony takes place before GTA 6 releases, but Rockstar’s unusually late launch also puts the game close to eligibility deadlines elsewhere.

BAFTA has already structured its 2027 Games Awards around an eligibility window ending on November 19, 2026 — GTA 6’s exact release date. Games released between August 1 and November 19 are eligible under BAFTA’s later entry deadline, meaning Rockstar’s title falls inside that window.

The situation around other ceremonies will depend on their respective eligibility rules and deadlines. A late-November launch also gives awards voters substantially less time with GTA 6 than games released earlier in the year.

Rockstar, however, has shown no indication that awards eligibility is determining its launch schedule. The developer has consistently positioned November 19 as the date required to deliver the game at the standard it expects.

Rockstar currently lists GTA 6 for November 19, 2026, with Jason and Lucia leading the story across Vice City and the wider state of Leonida. The game is confirmed for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.

Clair Obscur has already set another enormous GOTY benchmark

The five-award sweep is also only one way of measuring awards dominance.

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 produced an extraordinary awards run after its 2025 release. At the Golden Joystick Awards alone, Sandfall Interactive and its game collected seven awards, matching the record haul previously achieved by Baldur’s Gate 3.

Broader tracking of Game of the Year selections has placed Clair Obscur even further ahead. Different databases use different methodologies when counting awards from publications, critics and reader polls, so totals can vary considerably depending on which awards are included. What is clear is that Sandfall’s RPG became one of the most heavily awarded games in the industry’s history.

That provides useful context for GTA 6. Rockstar’s game enters its launch period with extraordinary expectations, but commercial anticipation and awards records are separate questions. The latter depend not only on critical reception but also on eligibility windows, voting schedules and how individual organisations define their awards year.

GTA 6 could still have an unusual awards season

Ironically, missing the Golden Joysticks could produce an awards run unlike almost any other major release.

GTA 6 could potentially compete at several major ceremonies shortly after its November launch before returning to the Golden Joysticks in 2027. That would spread its opportunities across two nominal awards cycles rather than concentrating them into the single-season sweep achieved by Baldur’s Gate 3 and Clair Obscur.

None of this tells us whether GTA 6 will actually win any of those awards. The game has yet to release, reviews do not exist and its eventual critical reception cannot be assumed from the anticipation surrounding it.

But one outcome can already be established before anyone sets foot in Rockstar’s new Vice City: even if GTA 6 eventually wins the biggest prize everywhere it is eligible, the calendar means it cannot replicate the same-season five-award sweep achieved by Baldur’s Gate 3 and Clair Obscur: Expedition 33.
