Roblox Disables Direct Messaging for Users Under 13 Amid Security Concerns

In a decisive move to bolster child safety, Roblox has announced significant updates to its security framework. Among the most impactful changes, users under the age of 13 can no longer send or receive direct messages (DMs) on the platform. This update reflects the company’s commitment to creating a safer digital space for younger audiences.

The restriction applies to communication outside of in-game interactions, although parental controls allow guardians to modify these settings. Roblox has also restructured its content rating system, introducing four distinct categories—Minimal, Mild, Moderate, and Restricted—to help parents better manage what their children access.

New Content Rating System

The newly introduced categories specify age-appropriate content as follows:

  • Minimal: Occasional mild violence or fear, light unrealistic blood.
  • Mild: Repeated mild violence, heavier unrealistic blood, crude humor.
  • Moderate: Moderate violence, realistic blood, and gambling content.
  • Restricted: Strong violence, heavy realistic blood, romantic themes, and alcohol presence.

Children under nine are limited to Minimal or Mild content, with access to Moderate content requiring parental approval. These settings adapt as users age, ensuring ongoing alignment with Roblox’s commitment to safety.

Responding to Increased Scrutiny

These measures come amid heightened criticism of Roblox’s security protocols. Reports from Bloomberg and Hindenburg Research have highlighted serious risks, labeling the platform a potential haven for child predators. Stephen Balkam, CEO of the Family Online Safety Institute (FOSI), praised Roblox’s initiative, emphasizing the importance of empowering parents to monitor their children’s activities.

What’s Next?

Roblox plans to implement these changes fully by early 2025. By addressing safety concerns proactively, the platform aims to rebuild trust while maintaining its reputation as a leading creative outlet for young gamers.

Roblox’s efforts underscore its commitment to evolving its systems to meet modern safety standards, ensuring a secure and enriching experience for all its users.
