Leaked Mass Effect: Universe Trailer Shows the Game EA Cancelled

A trailer for the Mass Effect game BioWare was making before its closure has leaked online, and Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier says it’s real. The roughly two-minute cinematic carries the title Mass Effect: Universe and surfaced on Reddit on October 22, 2026. That was one day after EA shut BioWare down and cancelled the project.

The footage pitches a smaller, spy-flavored story set in the Milky Way after the Reaper war. Liara T’Soni shows up. There is no Commander Shepard and no gameplay.

Who Leaked the Mass Effect: Universe Trailer?

The video was posted to r/masseffect by a Reddit user called Random_Hyabusa_Ninja. A fan in a thread had begged someone to share the rumored trailer, and the account answered with “Ask and you shall receive.”

The user said they couldn’t make a standalone post because it was a fresh burner account. Their identity hasn’t been confirmed, and outlets differ on whether the poster is a current or former BioWare developer.

Hours before the video appeared, a user claiming to work at EA said on an Austin subreddit that they’d seen “a trailer ready for Mass Effect 5” a few months earlier. That lined up neatly with what came next.

Jason Schreier Confirms the Trailer Is Real

Reddit moderators couldn’t verify the clip at first. Then Schreier, who covers the games industry for Bloomberg, posted on Bluesky that he could “confirm that this is a real trailer” for the game BioWare worked on until it closed.

That confirmation carries extra weight here. Fan-made Mass Effect trailers circulate every N7 Day, and AI-generated fakes have made leaks harder to trust. PC Gamer noted that at least two of its staff believe the voice heard in the trailer is Liara’s real actor.

What the Leaked Trailer Shows

The clip opens with a disclaimer saying it is “in-engine footage from our small team” built with “pre-production assets.” So this was a pitch-stage cinematic, put together by a handful of people inside BioWare, and nowhere near a finished product.

The story follows a weary human ex-soldier who meets an Asari woman in a bar. Flashbacks fill in his Alliance military past and the shadier “new line of work” he has picked up since, with gunfights, a hulking Krogan, high-speed vehicle chases and a brief romance with an Asari.

It ends with a betrayal and a bar fight. Liara appears near the end, the Mass Effect: Universe logo lands, and a “coming soon” card closes things out.

The protagonist is a new character with a strong Shepard look. That fits what BioWare had hinted at since its first teaser in December 2020, which showed a figure in N7 armor and pointed to a story connected to both the original trilogy and Andromeda.

Why the Leak Hurts So Much: BioWare Is Gone

EA confirmed on October 21 that it is closing BioWare as part of a round of roughly 400 job cuts, according to Bloomberg. About 50 of those roles were at BioWare’s Edmonton studio. You can read the full breakdown in our report on how EA shut down BioWare and cut 400 jobs.

In a letter to staff, EA COO David Tinson and chief studios officer Cam Weber said the company had “taken a hard look at our business.” EA’s memo described the next Mass Effect as being in early development. A new The Sims game was also cancelled, and the Skate team was downsized.

BioWare’s farewell post thanked fans for being “the most meaningful part of our story.” The studio was founded in Alberta in 1995 and made Baldur’s Gate, Knights of the Old Republic, Jade Empire, Mass Effect and Dragon Age.

A Promise From 2025 That Didn’t Hold

In November 2025, BioWare told fans that EA was still committed to Mass Effect 5. Less than a year later, the studio is closed. The cut also lands about a year after EA agreed to a $55 billion take-private deal backed by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, Silver Lake and Affinity Partners.

Recent history didn’t help BioWare’s case. Forbes pointed to Mass Effect: Andromeda, Anthem and Dragon Age: The Veilguard as a string of costly misses. Key franchise leads like Casey Hudson, Mark Darrah and Mac Walters had left years ago.

How Fans Reacted

Most of the reaction on r/masseffect was grief. One commenter said the clip “brought me back to that world for a bit,” and another admitted they expected a Rickroll until the trailer turned out to be real.

The spy-thriller pitch got plenty of praise. Several fans called a smaller, character-driven story a smart way back into the series, which makes the cancellation sting harder.

Leaks after a studio closure aren’t new, but this one is unusually polished. Our game leaks coverage tracks how often cancelled projects resurface this way.

What Happens to Mass Effect Now?

EA hasn’t said what it plans to do with the Mass Effect license. Former BioWare executive producer Mark Darrah suggested on YouTube that EA could sell IPs like this one, or simply “bury them in the vault.”

The live-action series at Amazon is reportedly still moving forward, with Doug Jung, writer of Star Trek Beyond and Mindhunter, attached. For now, that show is the only confirmed Mass Effect project still alive.

EA is keeping its focus on sports, Battlefield, Apex Legends and Star Wars, per Push Square. If you’re after something new to play while the Mass Effect fandom processes this, our list of major November 2026 game releases is a good place to start.
