Sony Pictures is in talks to acquire the Battlefield movie, the live-action adaptation of EA’s military shooter. Christopher McQuarrie is set to write and direct, and Michael B. Jordan is producing with a possible starring role. The deal is not final yet, but Sony now looks like the frontrunner after months of competition between studios.

Sony is in talks to land the Battlefield movie
According to Variety’s report, Sony is in talks to acquire McQuarrie and Jordan’s big-screen Battlefield adaptation after a bidding war between several studios. Sony declined to comment on the negotiations.
The Hollywood Reporter also confirmed that Sony Pictures is now the frontrunner. TheWrap was the first to report Sony’s involvement.
In short, nothing is signed. “In talks” means Sony is the most likely home for the film, but the deal could still change.
Who is making the Battlefield movie?
McQuarrie is attached to write, direct and produce the film, and Jordan is attached to produce. Here is the full team named so far:
| Name | Role |
|---|---|
| Christopher McQuarrie | Writer, director, producer |
| Michael B. Jordan (Outlier Society) | Producer, possible lead actor |
| Jesse Stern (Electronic Arts) | Producer |
| Carter Swan (Emerald Neon) | Producer |
| Roy Lee and Miri Yoon (Vertigo) | Producers |
| Elizabeth Raposo (Outlier Society president) | Producer |
Christopher McQuarrie
McQuarrie is best known for his long run on the Mission: Impossible films with Tom Cruise. He takes on Battlefield after apparently wrapping up Cruise’s time as Ethan Hunt with last year’s The Final Reckoning. He also co-wrote Top Gun: Maverick and won an Oscar for writing The Usual Suspects.
His action films rely heavily on practical stunts and large-scale set pieces, which is a natural fit for a series built around big multiplayer warfare.
Michael B. Jordan
Jordan, who won an Oscar for Sinners, is on board to produce and possibly star. Whether he plays the lead depends on how the project comes together.
This is not Jordan’s first link to a military game adaptation. He was once attached to a Rainbow Six movie after starring in Without Remorse, but that project appears to have stalled.
How the Battlefield movie deal came together
| When | What happened |
|---|---|
| Earlier years | Fox and Paramount both tried to adapt Battlefield as a TV series |
| Spring 2026 | McQuarrie and Jordan’s package is pitched to studios, including Sony and Apple |
| April 2026 | Reports of a bidding war between several major studios and streamers |
| October 2, 2026 | Sony emerges as the frontrunner and enters talks |
When the project was first shopped in spring, the team made clear it was meant for a theatrical release, not streaming. The Hollywood Reporter warned at the time that the deal would “not be cheap,” since both the talent and the game rights would be expensive.
By April, Insider Gaming reported a bidding war involving Warner Bros. Discovery, Amazon MGM Studios, Sony, Universal and Netflix.
Why Hollywood wants Battlefield now
The timing makes sense. The Hollywood Reporter called Battlefield 6 the biggest video game of 2025. It launched on October 10, 2025, and the series started with Battlefield 1942 back in 2002.
The game’s success has had a cost, though. Earlier this year, EA laid off staff across its Battlefield studios despite Battlefield 6’s record sales. The game is still getting regular content, including the Season 3 update with Ranked Battle Royale Quads, so the movie would arrive while the series is still active.
Battlefield movie vs Call of Duty movie
Battlefield’s long-time rival is getting a film too. Paramount is making a Call of Duty movie, which has a release date of June 30, 2028.
| Battlefield movie | Call of Duty movie | |
|---|---|---|
| Studio | Sony (in talks) | Paramount |
| Director | Christopher McQuarrie | Not covered here |
| Release date | Not announced | June 30, 2028 |
| Status | Deal not final | In development |
If both films happen, the two biggest military shooters of the last two decades would end up competing in cinemas as well as in games.
What we don’t know yet
There is no plot, setting or release date yet. The Battlefield games have covered both world wars, Vietnam and near-future conflicts, so the film has plenty of eras to draw from. McQuarrie hasn’t said which one he will use, or whether the story will follow a specific game at all.
Casting beyond Jordan’s possible role hasn’t been discussed either. Expect those details only after Sony closes the deal.
