FIDE Online Chess Olympiad 2020 is a new ongoing chess major tournament that started on 25th July and will end on 30th August. Team India currently sits at the top position in Pool A taking over China by a single point.

After cancelling all the over-the-board competitions in 2020 due to pandemic except Biel Chess Festival, the Olympiad was moved to an online format. A unique collaboration between chess.com and FIDE gave birth to a new major international competition where 163 teams from all over the globe are participating.

The tournament also has a unique structure where a team of six should participate, including atleast two women.

Team India recently faced with Mongolia and after some unfortunate set of events, they had to draw with Mongolia in a 3-3 score. The team captain Vidit Gujrati cited internet outage as the reason of losing a ‘won-match’. He also states that a similar thing happened to his teammate Koneru Humpy and as a result, the team had to settle for a draw situation.

According to official standings, Team India currently has a total of 17 points accumulated and ranks number one in pool A, followed by China and Germany. Team India currently has an average rating of 2463 and detailed standings with player profiles are available on the official website.
