Fortnite is not down right now. As of 6:30 PM ET on Friday, October 16, 2026, Epic Games’ official status page lists every Fortnite service as Operational and shows no open incident.
Login, matchmaking, the Item Shop, voice chat, LEGO Fortnite and Fortnite Festival all show green. If the game won’t let you in, the problem is probably your connection, your platform, or something hitting only a small group of players.
Searches for “is Fortnite down” jumped across the US in the past hour, according to Google Trends. Below you’ll find the live status we checked, what went wrong earlier this week, and the fixes to try first.
Fortnite Server Status Right Now
Every Fortnite component on the Epic Games Public Status page reads Operational. The page banner says “All Systems Operational.”
| Fortnite service | Status (6:30 PM ET, Oct 16) |
|---|---|
| Login | Operational |
| Game Services | Operational |
| Matchmaking | Operational |
| Parties, Friends and Messaging | Operational |
| Voice Chat | Operational |
| Item Shop | Operational |
| Stats and Leaderboards | Operational |
| Fortnite Crew | Operational |
| LEGO Fortnite | Operational |
| Fortnite Festival | Operational |
Outside trackers agree. IsDown said “Fortnite is working normally” at 6:25 PM ET and logged just 3 player reports in the previous 24 hours.
One tracker picked up a brief blip. On Friday evening, StatusGator flagged a minor warning on Epic Online Services Sessions and Lobbies. Epic’s own page kept both components at Operational the whole time.
Epic confirms real outages in two places first: the status page and the official @FortniteStatus account on X. If neither one mentions a problem, there is no confirmed outage.
Why Are So Many Players Asking If Fortnite Is Down?
Epic has not reported any problem on October 16, and we found no confirmed cause for the spike. What we did find was a handful of scattered player complaints.
According to StatusGator’s report log, a player in Ontario had repeated disconnects and failed logins at 3:14 AM on October 16. Late on October 15, a player in Texas reported an error code that stopped them from playing.
Player numbers are also high right now. Fortnitemares 2026 runs until November 1, and the v42.40 update landed only a day ago with new Sprites and loot. Busy Friday evenings in the US often bring out small connection problems that never become an official incident.
What Happened During the Fortnite v42.40 Downtime?
The last real Fortnite outage was planned maintenance. Epic took the servers offline at 4 AM ET on Thursday, October 15, to install v42.40, the final major update of Chapter 7 Season 4.
The downtime ran long. Epic estimated about 90 minutes, but German outlet MeinMMO reported that the servers were still offline when that time was up.
| Time (ET) | Time (UTC) | What happened |
|---|---|---|
| Oct 14, 4:12 PM | Oct 14, 20:12 | Epic schedules v42.40 downtime |
| Oct 15, 3:30 AM | Oct 15, 07:30 | Matchmaking disabled |
| Oct 15, 4:00 AM | Oct 15, 08:00 | Servers go offline |
| Oct 15, 5:30 AM | Oct 15, 09:30 | Planned end passes, servers still down |
| Oct 15, 5:39 AM | Oct 15, 09:39 | Servers back online (per MeinMMO) |
| Oct 15, 6:02 AM | Oct 15, 10:02 | Epic marks the maintenance Completed |
We tracked the whole window live in our Fortnite servers down October 15 report. The update brought back Thorn’s Vampiric Blade, Finger Pistols, the Gatekeeper Shotgun, the Hunting Rifle and the Boost Pack.
The update also lets you automatically swap to a higher-tier copy of a weapon you’re carrying, and it adds new locker sorting. You can find every change in our Fortnite v42.40 patch notes breakdown.
Fortnite Not Working for You? Try These Fixes
When Epic shows everything green, the problem is almost always on your end. Work through these steps in order.
- Check the official channels again. Fresh incidents can appear within minutes.
- Fully close and restart Fortnite. On PC, close the Epic Games Launcher too, not just the game window.
- Restart your router. Use a wired connection if you can, since Wi-Fi drops cause most mid-match disconnects.
- Check your platform’s network. An outage on PlayStation Network, Xbox network or Nintendo will block Fortnite logins too.
- Verify game files on PC. In the Epic Games Launcher, go to Library, click the three dots on Fortnite, choose Manage, then Verify.
- Install pending updates. An outdated client can’t join matches after a patch like v42.40.
If you’re seeing the “Servers Not Responding” message, our guide to fixing Fortnite servers not responding walks through that error step by step.
When Is the Next Fortnite Downtime?
As of October 16, Epic has not announced any new Fortnite maintenance. The status page lists no upcoming Fortnite downtime.
There is one booked window for Epic Online Services, the backend that many games use for sessions and lobbies. It runs on November 10 from 06:00 to 07:30 UTC (1:00 to 2:30 AM ET). Epic says sessions and lobbies may be degraded for up to 90 minutes.
Fortnite update downtimes usually start at 4 AM ET and last 2 to 3 hours. Chapter 7’s final season is reported to start next month, so expect a longer break then. Our Fortnite news hub will post the exact time once Epic announces it.
