Does Fortnite Record Voice Chat? How Epic’s Reports Led to an FBI Arrest

Fortnite keeps a rolling five minutes of voice chat on your device, and Epic hears it only when someone reports you. That system led to the FBI arrest of an Alabama player known as WagesOfNinja.

Yes, Fortnite records voice chat, but only in a short rolling window. Your PC or console keeps the last five minutes of voice audio and deletes anything older. Epic hears that audio only if another player reports you. That system is how Epic Games ended up sending a player’s recordings to the FBI in September 2026.

The FBI arrested Edward Lee Frith, 29, of Alabama, on September 23, according to court records. He played under the name WagesOfNinja. Prosecutors charged him with interstate threatening communications after Epic flagged threats he allegedly made in voice chat. Frith has pleaded not guilty, and his trial is expected in December 2026.

How Fortnite Voice Chat Recording Works

Fortnite added voice reporting on November 16, 2023. It runs on your own device. Your console or PC stores the latest five minutes of voice chat and keeps overwriting it. Nothing goes to Epic’s servers until someone files a report.

When a player reports you, the last five minutes of audio are attached to the report and sent to Epic’s moderators. Epic says its systems also look for high-harm talk, such as threats of real-world violence, self-harm and child endangerment. According to Epic’s voice and text reporting FAQ, confirmed cases can be escalated to law enforcement, and the accounts are banned.

How long does Epic keep reported clips?14 days, or as long as any ban that follows, whichever is longer

How to Turn Off Voice Reporting in Fortnite (18+ Only)

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Go to the Communication tab.
  3. Find Voice Reporting and select Off When Possible.

“Off When Possible” only works in parties where every friend has the same setting. In public Game Channels, voice reporting stays on for everyone. Players under 18 can’t turn it off, but they can mute themselves or switch voice chat off. Parents can add more limits with Fortnite parental controls.

What Did the Fortnite Player Say in Voice Chat?

The FBI affidavit, first reported by Aftermath, says Frith talked about killing people and threatened any agents who came to his home. One line quoted in the filing reads: “Let’s see if the FBI is going to show up at my door because I’ll shoot them motherf**kers too.”

The affidavit also describes statements he allegedly made about harming himself if he was arrested.

A court has not tested any of these claims. Frith is presumed innocent.

How Epic Games Reported the Player to the FBI

Epic used what it calls a voluntary emergency disclosure. The package sent to the FBI had the WagesOfNinja account details and the audio clips captured by Fortnite’s voice reporting tool.

Investigators traced the account to Frith. According to court records, it was accessed more than 1,700 times from Alabama IP addresses. An FBI agent listened to every clip and confirmed the audio matched the transcripts in the affidavit.

The case moved fast. A typical Fortnite voice report ends with a warning or a ban. This one went from an in-game report to a federal indictment in about 72 hours. Epic has used the courts against bad actors before, most recently when a Fortnite DMA cheat seller was banned after an Epic Games lawsuit. This time it handed the evidence to federal agents.

What Charge Does Edward Frith Face?

Frith is charged, not convicted. He has pleaded not guilty and is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court. The details in this article come from the FBI affidavit filed in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Alabama.

Prosecutors have to prove a “true threat,” meaning a serious statement of intent to commit violence against a person or group. Since the Supreme Court decided Counterman v. Colorado in 2023, they also have to show the speaker was at least reckless about how his words would be understood. Ordinary trash talk usually doesn’t reach that bar. Saying you will shoot federal agents who come to your door can.

Earlier Fortnite Threat Cases

Federal prosecutors have brought Fortnite-related threat cases before. In September 2025, Jayden Griffin, a 19-year-old from South Dakota, pleaded guilty to sending death threats to Epic Games staff between October and November 2024. He faced the same charge and the same five-year maximum. He told the court: “I intended for the messages to be viewed as a threat at the time that I sent the messages.”

Griffin sent written messages to Epic staff. Frith’s alleged threats were spoken during matches and recorded by Fortnite’s own reporting system.

What the Arrest Means for Fortnite Players

With voice chat on, anything you say can be stored for five minutes on another player’s device, and players under 18 record by default. One report sends that clip to Epic. Epic has now shown it will pass serious threats to law enforcement.

For most players, nothing changes. Swearing and trash talk lead to in-game penalties at most. Threats of real violence are treated differently, as this case shows.

If you hear a threat, report the player in-game and pick voice chat so the audio is attached. If someone is in immediate danger, call local emergency services first. Players in the US can also send tips to the FBI at tips.fbi.gov.

FAQ

Q: Does Fortnite record your voice chat?

Yes, briefly. Your device keeps a rolling five minutes of voice chat and deletes older audio. Epic receives that clip only if another player reports you. Reported clips are kept for 14 days, or for the length of any ban that follows, whichever is longer.

Q: Can Epic Games listen to my Fortnite voice chat?

Only audio that has been reported. Epic says it cannot access voice chat unless voice reporting is on and a report has been submitted. Moderators then review the five-minute clip attached to that report.

Q: Can you turn off voice reporting in Fortnite?

Players 18 and older can choose “Off When Possible” under Settings, then Communication, then Voice Reporting. It still stays on in public Game Channels. Players under 18 can’t turn it off but can mute themselves or switch voice chat off.
