The upcoming Call of Duty movie will take place inside the Modern Warfare universe. Director and co-writer Peter Berg confirmed the setting at Fanatics Fest in New York City over the weekend, ending months of speculation about which corner of the franchise the film would adapt.
The reveal came during a panel called “Call of Duty in Culture,” which also promoted the upcoming launch of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4.
Peter Berg Confirms the Setting
Berg made the announcement on stage at Fanatics Fest, and Call of Duty’s official account shared the news online soon after. Taylor Sheridan, the writer behind Yellowstone, Landman, and Lioness, is co-writing the script with Berg.
Berg brings his own experience with military stories to the project. His directing credits include Friday Night Lights, Battleship, Lone Survivor, The Kingdom, and Deepwater Horizon.
Speaking in an earlier teaser, Berg said he and Sheridan are “deeply connected to the special ops community.” He added that the team wants to prioritise authenticity while also portraying the soldiers “on a human level.” The pair also promised “amazing scale” for the adaptation.
Why Modern Warfare Makes Sense
Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare launched in 2007 and marked the franchise’s first move away from its original World War II setting. Two direct sequels followed in 2009 and 2011.
The series was rebooted in 2019 with a new Modern Warfare title. That reboot brought an updated engine, refreshed visuals, and a grittier retelling of the story while keeping the same core characters. Two more sequels followed: Modern Warfare II in 2022 and Modern Warfare III in 2023.
Across these games, the story follows Captain John Price and his Task Force 141 squad on a mission to stop terrorist leader Vladimir Makarov. Given how central this storyline has been to the franchise for nearly two decades, using it as the basis for the film’s setting fits the series’ biggest and most recognisable arc.
It is still not confirmed whether the movie will adapt the Modern Warfare storyline directly or use the setting as a starting point for a new story.
What Activision and Paramount Have Said
In a joint statement, Activision and Paramount said the film is designed to thrill the franchise’s global fan base while also expanding it to new audiences. Both companies said they are committed to honouring the brand’s narrative and style for longtime fans and newcomers alike.
Paramount boss David Ellison said he has spent “countless hours” playing Call of Duty. He compared the studio’s approach to the film with the work put into Top Gun: Maverick, describing it as a “disciplined, uncompromising commitment to excellence.”
The movie was first announced in September 2025. Activision’s Rob Kostich also discussed the project in April at CinemaCon.
Call of Duty Movie Release Date
The Call of Duty movie is scheduled to arrive in cinemas on June 30, 2028. Plot details beyond the Modern Warfare setting remain under wraps.
While the movie sits years away, the next mainline game in the series arrives much sooner. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 launches October 23 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2. Players who pre-order the game get early access to the single-player campaign starting October 16.
Modern Warfare 4 is notable for a few reasons. It is the first Call of Duty title to launch on a Nintendo platform since 2011, though it will not be released on PlayStation 4. The game’s story features a war breaking out between North and South Korea. It will also be at least a year before the title reaches Xbox Game Pass, following Microsoft’s recent changes to the subscription service.
