HoYoverse released Genshin Impact Version 7.1, “A Rekviem for the Underworld,” on September 23, with the Archon Quest building toward a showdown with Ronova, the Ruler of Death. The fight ends with Ronova defeated in Snezhnaya. Since then, one question has dominated player discussion: is Ronova dead?
The short answer is that the game does not say. Ronova is beaten and loses her divine authority, but no line of dialogue after the battle confirms that she died.
Is Ronova dead? What the game confirms
The ending is easier to follow when you separate what the story shows from what it leaves open.

How Ronova loses her divine authority
Ronova’s power depends on a rule she has to follow. According to the Genshin Impact Fandom wiki, her killings broke the rules of the Heavenly Principles, so she worked with Rhinedottir to revive her victims before a monitoring cycle ended. That kept her authority from being revoked.
Version 7.1 goes after that weak point. While the fight goes on, the Tsaritsa confronts Rhinedottir, and the six Gnoses she collected activate and lock Rhinedottir inside a cube shaped barrier. Cryo energy slows the passage of time inside it. With Rhinedottir unable to help bring the dead back, Ronova loses her divine authority and becomes open to a fatal strike from Pierro.
The Ronova boss fight: both phases
The boss name on the health bar changes during the fight, and that change tells you whether the Fatui plan has worked yet.

Phase 1 cannot be won. After a platforming section where the Traveler escapes the afterlife, Pierro arrives with the finished Eye of the Fatui, a purple crystalline Delusion. Ronova warns him that no mortal body can hold that much power. He destroys it anyway, and her authority breaks.
In the final cutscene, Pierro confronts her about the Curse of Immortality she placed on him 500 years ago, drives a crystalline weapon through her, and activates a sealing array that traps her in a huge crystal formation.
What Pierro tells Dainsleif after the battle
The strongest evidence comes from the conversation after the fight. Dainsleif asks Pierro directly whether the final strike killed the Ruler of Death. Pierro does not say yes. He admits she may have left the battlefield without anyone seeing it.
He also says that if she did survive, her injuries would be severe and permanent, and he warns that she could come back for revenge. The Curse of Immortality is still active.
A cursed Pierro is also a clue on its own. If Ronova’s death had removed every curse she cast, the game would likely show it. It doesn’t.
Ronova’s “parting gift” and the Celestial Nails
Ronova does get one last scene. Injured, she retreats to a pillar in the sky, coughs, and says she now understands what dying feels like. She then cracks the celestial spire, calls it her parting gift, and fades into dim light and feathers.
That line sounds like a goodbye. As Game-M points out, a farewell line is not proof of death.
The effects show up across Teyvat. After her defeat, the Nails of Retribution light up in Dragonspine, The Chasm, Inazuma, the Sumeru desert, and Natlan. The epilogue sends the Traveler to check on each one.

The undated Ronova scene
Ronova also appears in a separate scene that has no clear place in the timeline. It could be a flashback, a memory, or a setup for something later. Because of that, it cannot be used as proof that she survived.
Does the Ronova Weekly Boss mean she is alive?
No. Ronova’s addition as a repeatable Weekly Boss says nothing about her status in the story. Trounce Domains are kept separate from the quest timeline.

How to unlock the Ronova Archon Quest
The battle is in Chapter VII, Acts III and IV. Both are permanent content, require Adventure Rank 18, and unlock after you finish Act II, “Wraith’s Nocturne.” Clearing the new Archon Quest content gives 620 Primogems.
