What is The Precinct about?
You play as Officer Nick Cordell Jr., a rookie beat cop in Averno City. The city is fictional, set on the East Coast in 1983, and based on New York City during its worst crime years. The game has a neo-noir look, a day and night cycle, and dynamic weather.
The main story follows Cordell as he looks into local gangs and a wider conspiracy. He’s also trying to find out what happened to his father, who died while serving in the same police force.
How The Precinct gameplay works
Most of the game happens on patrol. The world is a sandbox, so crimes happen on their own and you decide how to handle them.
The main activities are:
- Answering radio callouts across the city
- Car chases and helicopter pursuits
- Picking a tactical approach for shootouts and arrests
- Calling in backup when a situation escalates
- Writing tickets and arresting suspects for minor offenses
The open world, the 1980s city and the car chases are why people call it a GTA-like game. In GTA you commit the crimes. In The Precinct you stop them. Readers following Rockstar’s next release can see how GTA 6 handles dynamic weather and storms next to the weather system in this game.
The Precinct reviews and ratings
Critics gave the game mixed scores at launch. The Wikipedia page for The Precinct collects the main review data:
| Platform | Metacritic score | Rating label |
|---|---|---|
| PS5 | 66 | Mixed or average |
| PC | 66 | Mixed or average |
| Xbox Series X/S | 75 | Generally favorable |
OpenCritic lists 49% of critics recommending it. IGN liked the variety and realism but said the game gets repetitive. Push Square called it an “impressive sandbox romp,” while PCGamesN called it “deeply repetitive.”
Players on the PlayStation Store have rated it higher than critics did: 4.34 out of 5 from 5,599 ratings.

Is The Precinct worth buying on sale?
At $17.99, The Precinct costs $12 less than its regular price. It suits players who want a 1980s open world with police gameplay and don’t need the crime side of GTA. Critic scores sit in the mid range, but PlayStation Store users rate it at over 4 stars. The sale ends on October 8, 2026.
