Pokémon’s 30th anniversary celebrations are heading to Target stores across the United States this weekend, with participating locations preparing a four-hour in-store event featuring Pokémon activities, giveaways, photo opportunities and merchandise.
The Pokémon 30th Anniversary Celebration will take place on Sunday, September 27, from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. local time at participating Target stores. The event arrives during a particularly busy period for Pokémon collectors, following the launch of the franchise’s 30th Celebration Trading Card Game products and Target’s wider anniversary collaboration with The Pokémon Company International.
Fans attending the event will be able to participate in Pokémon-themed activities, create their own Pokémon Trading Card Game card through a drawing activity and take photos at dedicated displays. Giveaways will also be available while supplies last.
Perhaps the most interesting attraction for video game fans is Pokémon Pokopia. Select participating Target locations are expected to offer a demo of the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 game, giving some visitors an opportunity to try it ahead of release.
What happens at Target’s Pokémon 30th anniversary event?
The September 27 event is designed as an in-store Pokémon experience rather than simply another retail launch. Participating stores will feature dedicated Pokémon areas where families and longtime fans can take part in activities throughout the afternoon.
One of those activities allows visitors to draw and create their own Pokémon TCG card. Stores will also have themed photo opportunities, while promotional giveaways will be distributed while stocks last.
Pokémon merchandise, video games and other products will naturally be available during the event as well. Target has spent much of 2026 expanding its Pokémon offering as part of a year-long collaboration celebrating the franchise’s three-decade milestone.
The retailer’s relationship with Pokémon goes considerably further than the September event. Target is the only US-based mass retailer with an exclusive collection co-created with Pokémon for the anniversary, with the collaboration spanning more than 100 products across apparel, accessories, home goods, food and beverage and other categories.
Target initially launched the collection in May before following it with a second merchandise drop in June. The retailer has continued expanding its Pokémon anniversary presence in the months since, including through the release of the highly anticipated Pokémon TCG: 30th Celebration products.
Some Target stores will have a Pokémon Pokopia demo
The Pokémon Pokopia demo makes the event particularly notable for players rather than collectors alone.
Pokopia is being developed for Nintendo Switch 2 and takes Pokémon in a substantially different direction from the franchise’s traditional RPG formula. Players control a Ditto that has transformed into a human-like appearance and gradually build a habitat for Pokémon by collecting resources, crafting objects and reshaping the surrounding environment.
Not every participating Target is guaranteed to offer the demo, however. Local event information specifically describes Pokémon Pokopia demonstrations as being available at select stores, so fans primarily interested in playing the game should check their local Target’s event details before travelling.
Pokémon TCG collectors have another reason to visit Target
The celebration also comes less than two weeks after the first products from Pokémon TCG: 30th Celebration arrived in stores on September 16.
TalkEsport previously covered the Pokémon TCG: 30th Celebration set and its special anniversary cards, including the 30 different Pikachu rare cards created to mark the franchise’s 30th year.
The anniversary expansion is being released through multiple product waves rather than arriving entirely on one date. Target lists additional products including the 30th Celebration Booster Bundle and Mini Tins for October 2, giving collectors several more releases to watch after this weekend’s event.
Demand has already been significant enough for retailers to introduce special procedures around anniversary Pokémon products. Target has also increased the visibility of collectibles in its stores as Pokémon’s 30th anniversary drives renewed interest from both longtime collectors and newer fans.
When is the Target Pokémon event?
The Pokémon 30th Anniversary Celebration is scheduled for Sunday, September 27, 2026, with participating stores hosting activities between 12 p.m. and 4 p.m. local time.
The event is not limited to one region. Local announcements have confirmed participating stores across multiple US markets, including dozens of locations in Maryland, while reports from Nevada similarly list Target stores taking part in the celebration.
Activities and availability may differ between locations, particularly the Pokémon Pokopia demo and giveaways. Fans should therefore confirm that their nearest Target is participating before making the trip, especially if they are visiting for a specific activity.
The September 27 celebration adds another stop to what has effectively become a year-long birthday for Pokémon. Between Target’s exclusive merchandise, the 30th Celebration TCG expansion and new games, The Pokémon Company has stretched the franchise’s 1996 debut into a series of events and releases throughout 2026, and this weekend gives US fans another opportunity to celebrate it in person.
