The Max Payne 1 & 2 remake has received a fresh update, and it confirms that Rockstar Games remains firmly in control of any news about the project. Remedy Entertainment shared the update in its half-year financial report, published on August 11, 2026. The studio confirmed the remakes are still in full production but said it cannot share further details, since Rockstar handles all publishing decisions for the games.
Here is what Remedy revealed, and what it means for fans waiting on more news.
Why Remedy Can’t Share Max Payne 1 & 2 Remake Details
Remedy’s H1 2026 financial report addressed investor questions about the Max Payne 1 & 2 remake directly. A studio representative explained that Rockstar Games controls the publishing side of the project, which limits what Remedy can say publicly.
The representative stated: “There’s a lot of questions concerning Max Payne; on that game, Rockstar Games is handling the publishing side, so we can’t comment on those questions.”
The remakes have been in full production since August 2025. Rockstar currently owns the Max Payne intellectual property, since Remedy sold the rights to Take-Two Interactive back in 2002. That ownership structure is why Remedy cannot self-publish updates the way it does for its other titles.
Rockstar’s Focus Remains on GTA 6
Rockstar is currently occupied with the release of GTA 6, scheduled for November 19, 2026. The scale of that launch likely explains why the publisher has stayed quiet on Max Payne, choosing not to split attention between two major releases.
Remedy, meanwhile, is self-publishing its next major game, Control Resonant, which releases on September 24, 2026. The same financial report noted that Control Resonant has already gathered 1.5 million wishlists and ranks among the top pre-ordered PS5 games in the US. Since Remedy controls that title’s marketing, updates on Control Resonant have flowed more freely than those on Max Payne.
What Happens After GTA 6 Releases
Once GTA 6 ships, Rockstar is expected to turn some attention back to its other projects, including the Max Payne remakes. No official release window has been confirmed for the games.
There is also a physical media concern tied to timing. If the Max Payne 1 & 2 remake launches after January 2028, it will not receive a PlayStation disc release, following Sony’s shift away from physical game discs. Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick addressed this trend during the company’s August 7, 2026 earnings call, defending GTA 6’s digital-only release strategy. If the remakes arrive in 2028, players may only be able to buy a code-in-a-box version on PlayStation, rather than a traditional disc.
The remakes combine the original Max Payne (2001) and Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne (2003) into a single game, rebuilt on Remedy’s Northlight engine. For now, fans will need to wait for Rockstar to decide when the next update arrives.
