Is PlayGTA5 Still Working? GTA 5 Browser Port Status Explained

PlayGTA5 let anyone run GTA 5 in Chrome with a 700MB download, then went offline within hours. Here's what happened, who may be behind the takedown, and how to play GTA 5 safely now.

Status (checked October 7, 2026, 23:57 IST): PlayGTA5 is not working. The site shows a GTA 5 logo and a loading screen stuck at “Starting…0%”, and the game does not start. We will update this page if that changes.

PlayGTA5 is not working, and you can no longer play GTA 5 in browser for free. The unofficial site ran Grand Theft Auto V’s story mode inside Google Chrome on October 6, 2026. Within hours it went offline. The page now shows a GTA 5 logo and a loading screen that never finishes.

Neither Rockstar Games nor Take-Two Interactive has said anything publicly. Beebom and games.gg report that Take-Two had the port removed. Other outlets say the cause is still unconfirmed. Below, we separate what is known from what has only been reported.

Is PlayGTA5 Back Online?

No. As of our last check, playgta5.com shows a GTA 5 logo and a “Starting…0%” loading screen, and the game never starts. Earlier on October 6, visitors saw Cloudflare errors, a “Thanks for playing!” message and, according to Tom’s Hardware, an unrelated 1970s food advert.

A page that loads is not the same as a game that works. If any version of the site asks you to download a file or enter a login, close the tab.

What Was PlayGTA5?

PlayGTA5 was an unofficial website that let you run GTA 5 in a web browser with nothing to install. GTA Boom reports the domain playgta5.com was registered on October 3, 2026. Three days later it was all over X and Reddit.

The normal PC version needs about 170GB of space. The browser version started with roughly 700MB of compressed files and loaded more while you played. Reports say it used WebAssembly, a web technology that runs compiled code inside the browser at close to native speed. The game ran on your own device instead of a remote server, so players reported very little input lag.

According to Tom’s Hardware, Wonder Interactive founder Alex St. Louis posted on X that “GTA 5 has been ported to WebAssembly using AI.” No person or group has formally said they built the site. Our earlier report on the GTA 5 web browser port covers launch day in more detail.

FeatureWhat was reported
Game contentStory mode and free roam around Los Santos
Starting downloadAbout 700MB
BrowsersChrome and Edge (Chromium-based)
ControlsKeyboard and mouse, controller, touch on mobile
PerformanceAround 60 FPS claimed on an Apple M3 Pro (not independently tested)
GTA OnlineNot available

Not everyone got in. Many players got stuck on a “Mounting archives 24%” screen or saw runtime errors. One Linux user told LibertyCity the game used about 4.5GB of RAM, and some players said their browser cache filled up several gigabytes within minutes.

Why You Can No Longer Play GTA 5 in Browser on PlayGTA5

The site went offline on the same day it went viral, and the free game has not come back. Here is the order of events, based on multiple reports.

Stage (October 6, 2026)What happened
MorningClips of GTA 5 running in Chrome spread on X and Reddit
Within hoursHeavy traffic slowed the site, and many loads failed
Same dayVisitors started seeing Cloudflare Error 1014
Late October 6The site showed a default page and a “Thanks for playing!” message
After thatTom’s Hardware reported the domain was showing a vintage 1970s food advert

Cloudflare’s own documentation describes Error 1014 as a blocked CNAME record between domains on different Cloudflare accounts. It is a DNS and hosting error. It fits with a site being taken down. It doesn’t say who took it down or why.

Did Rockstar or Take-Two Shut It Down?

There is no official confirmation. Rockstar and Take-Two have not commented, and no copy of a DMCA notice for playgta5.com has been made public.

The company’s track record points in one direction, though. Take-Two used DMCA notices to take down an unofficial GTA Vice City browser port in December 2025. It also sent a cease-and-desist letter to the creator of a homebrew GTA V port for Nintendo Switch. Tom’s Hardware’s report on the takedown gives more detail on that history.

Timing adds pressure. GTA 6 launches on November 19, 2026, about six weeks from now. RockstarINTEL and games.gg also report that some players loaded a leaked in-development GTA 6 map into the port. Rockstar has already filed DMCA notices against accounts sharing leaked GTA 6 gameplay and map footage earlier this year.

GTA Boom and other outlets report that the port was built from leaked GTA 5 source code. Nobody has published technical proof of this. Treat it as reported, not confirmed.

Is It Safe to Use PlayGTA5 Copies or Lookalike Sites?

No. Once the original went down, copies and lookalike sites started claiming to offer the same thing. None of them are the original project, and none have been checked by anyone you can trust.

Before you click one, keep these risks in mind:

  • These sites are unofficial and use Rockstar’s game without permission.
  • A site that asks you to download an installer, add a browser extension or turn off your antivirus is a red flag.
  • Never enter your Rockstar, Steam or Epic login on a third-party site.
  • Never pay for “access” to a browser port. Nothing you get will be official or supported.

TweakTown reports that the site’s operator asked “Who wants the source code?” after the takedown. A user on X also claimed to be running a saved local build. Copies like these can be modified by anyone before they reach you.

How to Play GTA 5 Legally Today

The safe way to play GTA 5 is an official copy from Rockstar or a major store. Story mode and GTA Online both work, and you get updates and support.

PlatformWhere to buyNotes
PCSteam, Epic Games Store, Rockstar StoreSold as Enhanced and Legacy editions
PlayStation 5PlayStation StoreIncludes the upgraded next-gen version
Xbox Series X and SMicrosoft StoreCheck Game Pass too, as its catalogue changes

You can see editions and platforms on the official Grand Theft Auto V page. GTA 5 goes on sale often, and Epic gave it away for free in May 2020. Waiting for a sale is a cheaper legal option.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I still play GTA 5 in browser for free?

No. PlayGTA5 stopped working on October 6, 2026, a few hours after it went viral. The site now shows error pages or a “Thanks for playing!” message instead of the game. Any other site claiming to offer the same browser version is unofficial and could be unsafe.

No. PlayGTA5 was an unauthorized port of a game owned by Take-Two Interactive. It was reportedly built from leaked source code and was never approved by Rockstar. Sharing or hosting copyrighted game files without permission breaks copyright law in most countries.

Did Rockstar shut down PlayGTA5?

Nobody has confirmed it. Rockstar and Take-Two have made no statement, and no takedown notice has been published. Several outlets still believe Take-Two was behind it, because the company has removed unofficial GTA ports before, including a Vice City browser port in December 2025.

Could you play GTA Online on PlayGTA5?

No. Only story mode and free roam worked on PlayGTA5. GTA Online runs on Rockstar’s own servers and needs a verified account, which an unofficial browser port can’t connect to.

How big was the PlayGTA5 download?

The site started with about 700MB of compressed game files and loaded more as you played. The full PC version takes about 170GB. Some players reported several gigabytes of browser cache and about 4.5GB of RAM use during play.
