Overwatch Season 5 Balance Changes: Every Buff, Nerf and Hitbox Change

Overwatch Season 5 balance changes landed on October 6, 2026, with A Grim Doctrine. Doctrine launches already nerfed. Sombra moves to Support and loses Hack. Roadhog gets a new ability called Trash Compactor. Genji, Ana, Lucio, D.Va, Domina and Emre get buffs, and 40 heroes have resized hitboxes. Every number is below.

Season 5 went live at 11 AM PT, which was 11:30 PM IST on October 6 for players in India. Blizzard posted the official Season 5 patch notes on its forums shortly before launch. All values here come from that post.

Doctrine Nerfs: What Changed Before Launch

Blizzard weakened Doctrine before he was ever playable in a live season. The developer notes say he was overperforming against other supports during the September trial weekend. Dot Esports reported that he held a win rate of around 58 percent in that trial.

Ultimate costBase8% higher

Deliverance drone fire rate45

Deliverance is the one ability that got faster. The drones fire more often, so the ultimate applies its effects sooner. Those effects then end 2 seconds earlier. Losing crit immunity on Shrouded Momentum matters most for anyone trying to escape a Widowmaker or Hanzo.

Support Sombra: Every New Ability in Season 5

Sombra From Overwatch

Sombra is now a Support hero in the Tactician subrole. Hack is gone. Blizzard’s notes say players found being locked out of their abilities jarring and frustrating. She now applies a new debuff called Weaken, which halves an enemy’s damage and healing output.

AbilityStatusWhat it does
Machine PistolChanged7 damage per bullet (was 8). Falloff starts at 20m (was 15m)
Hotfix (secondary fire)New65 instant heal plus 25 per second, up to 175 total or 12 seconds. 2 charges, 8s cooldown, 17m range
Cyberspace (Ability 1)NewExplodes for 40 damage or healing, leaves a 5m zone for 3 seconds that Weakens enemies
TranslocatorChangedStealth lasts 6.5s (was 5s). Range 12.25m (was 18m). Cooldown 7.5s (was 6s)
EMPChangedUltimate costs 67.5% more. Damage is 20% of current health (was 25%)
Conspirator (passive)NewReveals enemies who have a fully charged ultimate
Hack, Virus, OpportunistRemovedNone

Hotfix still hacks health packs and most enemy deployables, which triggers a separate 6-second cooldown. Hacked health packs now stay hacked for 30 seconds, down from 45. She can also cast Hotfix while stealthed. That reveals her briefly without breaking stealth.

Her perks are all new except one minor perk. Life Hack makes EMP apply Hotfix to nearby allies. Data Packet cuts Hotfix’s main cooldown by 4 seconds when she hacks a health pack. Cybersecurity doubles Cyberspace healing on allies below half health. Her perks also take longer to unlock, with 67% more XP needed for the minor perk and 69.5% more for the major.

Roadhog Rework: Trash Compactor and the New Scrap Gun

Blizzard rebuilt Roadhog to make Chain Hook less lethal and give him a way to protect his team. His primary fire now shoots two bursts per volley. The old secondary fire is gone, and Trash Compactor sits in its place.

Scrap Gun ammo612

Trash Compactor absorbs enemy projectiles in front of Roadhog for 2 seconds. He then fires back an explosive shot worth 75 to 200 damage, based on 30% of what he absorbed. He moves 15% slower while it is active. The cooldown is 10 seconds in 5v5 and 11 seconds in 6v6.

His perks change too. Scrap Hook now reloads 4 ammo instead of 2. Here, Piggy Piggy cuts Chain Hook’s cooldown by 80% during Whole Hog. Toxic Exhaust slows enemies in front of an active Trash Compactor by 30% and deals 20 damage per second.

Every Other Hero Buff and Nerf

Tank: D.Va’s Micro Missiles fire faster, at 14 shots per second instead of 11. Total damage stays the same, but the burst comes out sooner. Domina’s Crystal Charge drops to a 7-second cooldown, and Reconstruction’s ability lifesteal rises from 75% to 100%.

Damage: Genji’s Swift Strike now hits for 60 instead of 50. To balance that, Dragonblade drops from 110 to 100 damage but swings 15% faster. Emre’s Cyber Frag cooldown falls from 10 to 9 seconds. Bastion’s Reconfigure lasts 5 seconds instead of 6. Cassidy can no longer use High Noon while attached to Jetpack Cat’s Lifeline. Shion swaps Rapid Reload for Survival Instinct, which adds 1 second to Evade’s overhealth.

Support: Ana’s Groggy perk is replaced by Local Anesthetic. Sleep Dart now explodes on impact, slows enemies, and deals 45 damage over 3 seconds. Lucio’s Sound Barrier goes back to 6 seconds, and the Beat Drop perk now gives 4 seconds of Amp It Up after casting it.

Overwatch Season 5 Hitbox Changes for 40 Heroes

Blizzard resized hit volumes across most of the roster to make aiming more consistent between similar heroes. To offset the bigger hitboxes, hitscan projectiles shrank. Large hitscan shots went from 0.07 to 0.04 meters, and small ones from 0.04 to 0.02 meters.

Head heights for Mizuki (10 to 6) and Mei (10 to 4) were also lowered. Most Supports got larger heads, and Lucio’s jump from 13.2 to 16 is one of the biggest. Zenyatta and Torbjorn are the only two heroes whose heads got smaller.

Top 500 Changes in Season 5

Top 500 now ranks players by their actual Rank instead of Challenger Score. Blizzard also removed the Heat Bonus, which rewarded players for showing up in consecutive weeks. Challenger Score still decides who makes the leaderboard. A player with the lowest score among the 500 can now be Rank 1 if their actual rank is highest. End-of-season titles follow Rank as well.

For grinders, this is the biggest competitive change of the patch. High playtime alone no longer pushes you up the board.

Stadium Changes in Season 5

Stadium Quick Play is now Open Queue with role limits of 1 Tank, 2 Damage and 3 Supports. Passive health from currency is down 50%, and several healing reduction items now hit 40%. That fits Blizzard’s July plan for Stadium, which we covered when it ended new content for the mode: balance updates continue, but no new heroes or maps.

Will These Changes Reach Pro Play?

Yes. OWCS teams play on the live patch, so the Sombra and Roadhog reworks will reach pro matches. The last big international event, the OWCS Midseason Championship in Paris, was played before any of these reworks existed. How teams use Support Sombra’s Weaken in coordinated fights is the first thing to watch.

Other Season 5 Updates Worth Knowing

The Mystery Madness: Graveyard Games event runs for four weeks. Its Halloween mode mixes Mystery Heroes, Junkenstein’s Lab and Stadium, and players earn Powers each time they die. Halloween versions of Hollywood, Lijiang Tower and Chateau Guillard stay available in all queues through November 3.

Grimsvotn is the new Escort map. Map voting will no longer offer the last 2 maps you played within a 2-hour window.

Unvaulted Battle Passes from Seasons 1 to 15 are now in the shop. Only one can be active at a time alongside the current pass. Mythic Skins, Mythic Prisms, Overwatch Coins, XP Boosts and Player Titles can’t be earned from unvaulted passes. If you plan to buy old passes, our guide on earning Overwatch Coins for free can help. The 2026 Season 4 pass will be unvaulted at midseason.

Support Sombra on the hero select screen

Blizzard says the forum version of the notes will not be updated. Later hotfixes will appear on the official Overwatch patch notes page.
