Overwatch Ends Stadium Mode Support: What It Means for Players

Blizzard has confirmed that Stadium mode in Overwatch will no longer get new content. The studio says player numbers for the mode have dropped well below other core modes in the game.

Stadium launched on April 22, 2025, before the game’s rebrand from Overwatch 2 back to Overwatch. It was the biggest new mode the game had seen in years. Stadium uses a best-of-seven format. Players earn in-match currency between rounds and spend it on upgrades that change how their Hero plays.

The mode drew attention early on for its roguelike-style mechanics. It gave players a fresh way to experience Overwatch’s combat. But Blizzard says the audience has settled into a much smaller group compared to the game’s main modes.

Stadium Won’t Get New Heroes or Maps

Blizzard shared the update in a developer blog post from game director Aaron Keller. The post explains that Stadium still has a loyal player base. But the studio does not plan to expand the mode further.

As of June 28, Stadium Ranked and Stadium Unranked each made up about 3% of daily players. Unranked Role Queue, by contrast, accounted for roughly 54% of daily players. Ranked Role Queue sat higher too, at a much bigger share than Stadium.

Blizzard also shared numbers for 6v6 modes. Unranked Open Queue made up around 19% of daily players. Ranked Open Queue reached about 8%.

“Overall, 5v5 has maintained its majority and 6v6 continues to see an increase in popularity,” Blizzard wrote in the blog. “Stadium, meanwhile, has settled into a dedicated, smaller audience.”

What Happens to Stadium Now

Stadium is not going away. Blizzard says it will keep the mode alive with seasonal balance updates, competitive rank resets, and rewards. What ends is new content. No new Heroes. No new maps.

“With this in mind, while we’ll continue supporting Stadium with seasonal balance updates, rank resets, and rewards, we’re not planning on expanding Stadium with new Heroes or maps,” Blizzard’s developers explained.

Stadium currently supports 33 of Overwatch’s 52 Heroes. Blizzard had been adding Heroes to the mode gradually since launch, since each one needs a custom build and unique ability tweaks for Stadium’s format.

Dev Team Moves to Other Projects

Rather than keep building out Stadium, Blizzard is shifting the team behind it toward other Overwatch projects. The studio says it will apply what it learned from developing Stadium to future plans for the game.

The announcement came alongside news of new experimental 6v6 formats. One of them, a Quick Play test called Flex Queue, runs from July 16 through July 19.
