To get a pet chicken in CS2, you claim a Chicken Egg from your Weekly Drop. The egg hatches into a chick after about a week, and the chick grows into an adult chicken once you feed it.
Valve added the pet system in the Rush Hour update on September 22, 2026, but it isn’t in the patch notes. The official September 22 update notes mention chickens only once: they can now take damage from the Zeus x27. Players found the eggs themselves when they opened their weekly rewards.

What you need before you start
Weekly Drops are available only to Prime accounts, so a free account cannot get a Chicken Egg. Players report that the egg appears as a reward option the first time you rank up in a given week.
Some players have not seen the egg in their drop yet. Valve has not said whether every account gets one or whether it is rolling out in waves.
How to get a pet chicken in CS2: step by step
- Earn your weekly rank up. Play matches until you gain enough XP to level up for the week.
- Open your Weekly Drop. The Chicken Egg shows up as a reward option.
- Claim the egg. It uses both reward slots, so you won’t get a case, weapon finish or any other item that week.
- Go back to the main menu. The egg sits in a small basket next to your agent. It does not appear in your Steam inventory.
- Check on the egg. Hover over the basket to see its status, or open the inspect view to hold the egg up close.
- Wait for it to hatch. Early reports say this takes about a week.
- Feed the chick. Use Chicken Feed from later Weekly Drops so it can grow into an adult.
So far the Weekly Drop is the only way players have gotten an egg. One report from bo3.gg says eggs are won through bids in the Armory, but no player has shown that working in the current build.
How long does a CS2 chicken egg take to hatch?
Players estimate about seven days. Valve has not published an official hatch time.
Reports also disagree on whether the game shows a countdown. Some players say there is an egg timer on the main menu. Others see only a short message saying the egg will hatch soon, with no timer. When the egg hatches, there is a full hatching animation.

A chick is too young to follow you into matches. Only an adult chicken can join you in lobbies.
How to feed your chick in CS2
Chicken Feed is a separate item that also comes from Weekly Drops. A chick won’t grow unless you feed it, so you’ll need to keep claiming feed over the following weeks.
Valve has not confirmed how much feed a chick needs or whether feeding affects which chicken it becomes.
What is the Hatchbook?
The Hatchbook, called “Pet Book” in the game files, is a photo album for your pets. You can drag and drop photos of your chickens into it. Because chickens eventually leave, the Hatchbook keeps a record of every pet you have raised.
All CS2 chicken breeds and colours
The game files contain three adult chicken breeds:

Dataminers found 34 to 35 colour variants across the three breeds. A Reddit thread listing the 35 new chicken skins includes natural brown and white birds along with unusual ones in bright blue, purple, yellow, nuclear red and toxic green.
All chicks look the same, so you won’t know your chicken’s variant until it grows up. Eggs do come in different colours and patterns, and some players think the egg decides the final chicken. Dataminers report that each bird stores its own colour seed, which would make most pets unique to their owner.
Valve has not confirmed a rarity system. Any claim that one chicken is rarer than another is guesswork for now.
Can you trade or sell a CS2 pet chicken?
No. Eggs, chicks and chickens are not in your Steam inventory, so you can’t trade them, sell them on the Steam Community Market or move them to another account.
You also can’t collect several at once. If you already have an egg, a chick or an adult chicken, you won’t get a second egg. Offers to sell eggs or “rare chickens” on Discord or third party sites are not real.
