VCT 2023 LOCK//IN Day 1 Recap

0

The VCT 2023 LOCK//IN got underway last night at Sao Paulo in Brazil. A total of 32 teams entered the competition to grab the LOCK//IN Championship title alongside a lion’s share of $100,000 USD from the prize pool.

The first two matches were played between KOI and NRG followed by Detonation FM and Giants both played on LAN in Brazil. NRG and Giants both advanced onto the ROund of 16 while Detonation FM and KOI were sent packing home due to the format being a single elimination.

Below we have jotted a quick breakdown of events between these four teams in Brazil at the VCT 2023 LOCK//IN

NRG Vs KOI : (Best of 3, Played on : LAN, Single Elimination Bracket)

1. NRG ban Ascent

2. KOI ban Split

3. NRG pick Icebox

4. KOI pick Haven

5. NRG ban Fracture

6. KOI ban Lotus

7. Pearl was left over

Map 1 : Icebox (Picked and won by : NRG, Final Score : 13-11)

KOI’s Nikita “trexx” Cherednichenko and his men came alive on NRG’s map pick, with the former on Sova scoring a triple kill haul to help enable a 9-3 start to the map for his team. NRG showed signs of life toward the latter portion of the first half and clawed back to post eight rounds of their own thanks to Sam “s0m” Oh and his heroics which halted KOI’s onslaught.

As we speak about the onslaught forced upon by KOI, the European-CIS side were hit by the 9-3 curse with NRG successfully being able to chart a comeback into the map and go 1-0 up in the series.

Map 2 : Haven (Pick : KOI, Winner : NRG, Final Score : 13-9)

On Haven, no side got off to a commanding start with NRG and KOI having traded rounds back and forth. But gradually it seemed as if NRG were the better team to have posted unrelenting efforts to bag the first half in their favor with Ardis “ardiss” Svarenieks going berserk on his Jett pick, picking off on KOI’s defenses.

The first half ended with NRG beating KOI to settle on 8-4. Early trading of rounds gave KOI a chance to run away with 4 consecutive rounds over NRG on their attack but the North Americans began to leave no stone unturned when it came to locking out KOI off from the blast sites.

NRG comfortably cruised to a 13-9 win over KOI as they advanced onto the Round of 16 where they play Giants in 3 days.

Detonation FM Vs Giants : (Best of 3, Played on LAN, Single ELimination Bracket)

Map Veto :

DFM ban Split

GIA ban Fracture

DFM pick Haven

GIA pick Icebox

DFM ban Lotus

GIA ban Ascent

Pearl was left over

The second match of the VCT//LOCK IN 2023 Brazil was played between DetonatioN FM and Giants Gaming. DetonatioN added two new players, while Giants added star fragger nukkye, hoody, and IGL rhyme to their active roster in the transfer window.

Throughout the Best of 3, Žygimantas “nukkye” Chmieliauskas and his men never let DFM have the honeymoon period to come to life with their new roster. The Giants were instrumental in picking both maps over Detonation with both seemingly played in a one-sided affair.

13-4 and 13-7 read the score lines for both Haven and Icebox in favor of the Giants as they now lock horns with NRG in the Round of 16 bracket. Detonation have been eliminated from the tournament due to the event being a single elimination which itself makes the tournament brutal.

The VCT 2023 LOCK//IN tournament continues today with 3 star-studded match-ups scheduled. FunPlus Phoenix plays Karmine Cops while BBL Esports take on DRX and to end the day, we will see a new faced Cloud9 take on Paper Rex.

In an attempt to tackle corruption in the esports industry, GG.Bet has entered into a three-year agreement with ESIC. This collaboration will see GG.Bet support ESIC’s anti-corruption video tutorial series, aimed at educating players and other stakeholders on the perils of betting while participating in a game. As a “Tier 1 Anti-Corruption Supporter,” GG.Bet reinforces its commitment to creating a secure and equitable environment for all players and stakeholders.

ESIC has formed partnerships with multiple esports companies, such as Esports Charts, PandaScore, and Promod Esports, among others, to aid its anti-corruption investigations and educational endeavors. The partnership between GG.Bet and ESIC is a positive move in the right direction, ensuring a fair and secure environment for all players and stakeholders in the esports industry.

CSGO: Valve Regional Rankings Locked Ahead of RMR Closed Qualifier Invites

Valve has recently updated their Regional Rankings, following the conclusion of IEM Katowice, and the teams who should receive invites to compete in the BLAST.tv Paris Regional Major Ranking (RMR) closed qualifiers can now be analyzed.

The final list remains subject to change based on various factors such as roster tweaks, multiple teams within an organization, and the choice of certain teams to compete in either the North American or South American qualifiers. However, the majority of the teams listed can now be confident of their attendance in their region’s qualifiers.

The RMR format is such that teams who made it to the Legends Stage of the IEM Rio Major have received direct invites to their respective RMR events. The remaining teams will be determined through regional closed qualifiers. Europe will have two closed qualifiers, each with 16 teams. North America and South America each get a 16-team qualifier, while Asia, China, Oceania, and the Middle East each get an eight-team qualifier.

Half of the teams in each closed qualifier are determined by Valve’s Regional Rankings, while the other half will earn their spots through the upcoming open qualifiers. The final update to Valve’s ranking is crucial as it determines which teams will avoid the open qualification stage.

In Europe, the teams invited to the closed qualifier are G2, Astralis, 9INE, Copenhagen Flames, Monte, Falcons, Apeks, Illuminar, OG, Aurora, GamerLegion, forZe, SAW, HAVU, 1WIN, and IKLA. These teams will be split evenly based on seeding between RMR Closed Qualifier A and RMR Closed Qualifier B.

In North America, the teams invited to the closed qualifier are Complexity, paiN, Nouns, TeamOne, MIBR, Evil Geniuses, ATK, and Vendetta. MIBR, paiN, and TeamOne can choose to compete in the South American qualifier instead, and if they do, Strife, Detonate, and timbermen will be next in line. Organizations with multiple teams, such as Evil Geniuses, will not be allowed to field multiple rosters, and EG Black and EG White have been left off the list as a result.

In South America, the teams invited to the closed qualifier are Fluxo, 9z, Sharks, ARCTIC, 00NATION, Imperial, Corinthians, and O PLANO. O PLANO, ARCTIC, and Corinthians would fall off the list if one of the Brazilian teams in North America chose to compete in South America instead.

In Asia, the teams invited to the closed qualifier are IHC, NKT, Eruption, Clutch. In Oceania, the teams are Grayhound, Rooster, VERTEX, and Encore. In China, the teams are Lynn Vision, Rare Atom, HSG fe, and Wings Up. In the Middle East, the teams are Invictus International, Nixuh, Bravado, and Goliath. Nixuh has since disbanded and may forfeit their spot, while Bravado has changed a majority of their roster and may also forfeit their spot.

The Regional Rankings update by Valve has provided a clearer picture of which teams will be competing in the BLAST.tv Paris RMR closed qualifiers. With the majority of teams now confirmed, the anticipation for the closed qualifier events is building. It will be interesting to see how the remaining teams secure their spots through the open qualifiers and how the final list will be affected by roster tweaks, multiple teams within organizations, and teams choosing to compete in different regions.

G2 Esports wins IEM Katowice 2023

0

G2 Esports made history at the Intel Extreme Masters (IEM) Katowice tournament, becoming champions after defeating Heroic 3-1 in the grand final. The international squad, consisting of cousins Nikola “NiKo” Kovač and Nemanja “huNter-” Kovač, among others, won the title without losing a single series and only dropping one map. This marks a momentous occasion for the Kovač cousins, especially the elder of the two who had previously played in three IEM Katowice grand finals before finally lifting the iconic trophy in Poland.

Justin “jks” Savage Makes History

In addition to G2’s victory, player Justin “jks” Savage made his own mark in the history books. This win marks his second IEM Katowice championship in a row after he raised the trophy as a stand-in with FaZe in 2022. With this achievement, Savage became the first player to win back-to-back IEM Katowice championships since 2016, and the first player ever to do so with two different teams.

G2’s Dominant Performance

G2 Esports dominated the tournament, extending their win streak to 12 matches. The team played with precision and strategy, showing their skills and teamwork on the global stage. Their victory at IEM Katowice solidifies their position as a top-tier team in the competitive esports world.

The Significance of IEM Katowice

IEM Katowice is one of the most prestigious tournaments in the esports world, attracting top teams and players from around the globe. The tournament has a rich history, dating back to 2007, and has been a staple in the competitive esports calendar. Winning at IEM Katowice is a huge accomplishment for any team and is a testament to their skill and determination.

Map Recap

Nuke

G2’s pick prompted the Danes to start on the defence where they managed to do well. Only letting slip 5 rounds, G2 was looking shaky with their offence looking not as sharp in comparison with their previous showings. However, the sizeable 5 rounds deficit was quickly levelled once they moved on the defence. On the CT side, things look just how everyone anticipated with the experience and firepower coming into play for the international team where they closed the map 16-12.

Mirage

Heroic answered back with a strong offence of their own and all of a sudden G2 didn’t look as invincible. The skipper in cadiaN looked like the point person as a well-drilled T side took a 3-round lead before it was G2’s chance to attack. A better showing on the offence and G2 found themselves levelled with Heroic taking the lead in the 21st round. Everyone on the G2 side pulled their weight and their star power working in unison overpowered the Danes who themselves managed to close the gap in the end but not enough to push it over the line as G2 took home a close victory.

Inferno

Similar to Mirage, Heroic converted a 2nd round force buy following a pistol defeat leaving G2 in search of consecutive round wins. Heroic switched to a higher gear and looked almost unrecognizable later in the 2nd half. G2 failed to find their footing and Heroic pulled off a miracle, becoming the first team to take a map away from them in this tournament, a feat that no one achieved. G2 futile resistance left Heroic needing two more maps in a row if they were to take the trophy home while they needed just one.

Ancient

G2 on the CT side kick off the map with a 3-0 lead before the Danes showed up. A series of back and forth between the two sides saw G2 take a marginal 3-round lead on their defence. Their offence started with a pistol round conversion and building a 6 rounds lead before both teams had rifles out. Back and forth till G2 reach 16 in remarkable fashion winning the final map 16-7.

Heroic Secures Grand Final Spot at IEM Katowice CSGO 2023

Heroic, have once again solidified their place as a dominant force in the world of esports by securing their spot in the prestigious IEM Katowice Grand Final. The Danish squad effortlessly overpowered Natus Vincere in a two-map series, clinching commanding wins of 16-8 on both Inferno and Mirage. This marks their second grand final appearance in just three months, following their triumphant victory at the BLAST Premier Fall Final in November.

The team’s success was largely due to the exceptional performance of Casper “cadiaN” Møller, who credited the close-knit bond of the squad as the key ingredient to their triumph. “We believe that camaraderie is a crucial piece to the puzzle of building a successful team, which is why we make sure to engage in a lot of social activities outside of playing,” Møller stated in a post-match interview. “You can see that it’s working, as our players are thriving and having a good time.”

The match between the two teams began on Natus Vincere’s map pick of Inferno, where Heroic had only a 38% win rate over the past three months. However, the Danish team overcame this disadvantage and made a remarkable comeback, securing a 5-1 lead on the CT-side despite an early deficit. Natus Vincere attempted to catch up with double kills from Denis “electroNic” Sharipov and Valeriy “b1t” Vakhovskiy, but their efforts were to no avail, as the Danes took map one with a 16-8 victory.

The second map, Mirage, started with a B site shutdown from b1t and Ilya “Perfecto” Zalutskiy, Heroic quickly regained the upper hand, securing a 5-1 lead. Despite Natus Vincere’s attempts to grab the advantage with multiple opening picks, they were unable to convert them into round wins. The Danes pulled ahead in the later rounds, securing a one-sided first-half victory of 11-4.

In the second half, the Danish squad continued to apply pressure on Natus Vincere, reaching map and series point with well-timed flanks and gamble stacks. Despite the Ukrainians’ best efforts, they could not prevent Heroic from closing things out, securing a 16-8 victory on Mirage and the series win.

CadiaN and his teammates will now advance to the grand final in Poland, where they will face the winner of the Liquid vs G2 semi-final match on Sunday at 20:30. This marks an impressive achievement for the Danish team, who have consistently proven themselves as one of the top contenders in the world of CS:GO.

Heroic’s commanding performance against Natus Vincere serves as a testament to their teamwork and dedication to the game. With their second grand final appearance in three months, the Danish squad has firmly established themselves as a force to be reckoned with, leaving fans eagerly anticipating their showdown with the winner of Liquid vs G2 in the IEM Katowice Grand Final.
