The Sims universe is undergoing a seismic change as dozens of the most well-known content creators of the franchise have left behind their collaborations with Electronic Arts, launching what could become one of gaming’s most historic creator-led boycotts.
The exodus comes after EA’s $55 billion acquisition by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF), Silver Lake, and Jared Kushner’s Affinity Partners, the largest all-cash sponsor take-private investment ever. Top creators, such as James Turner, Lilsimsie, Plumbella, Devon Bumpkin, Vixella, and CarynandConnieGaming, have openly disassociated themselves with the EA Creator Network, losing early access to game packs and rich creator codes that have professionally supported their careers.
Lilsimsie, with more than 2 million subscribers, put the community’s core issue into words: “The values represented by the people buying EA are fundamentally contradictory to what I believe in and will support.” Her exit is especially heartbreaking. EA had already partnered with her in creating bespoke DLC, but she decided her contributions would ultimately go to new ownership that did not share The Sims’ legacy of inclusivity.
Plumbella, a veteran Sims historian, emphasized the ethical math involved in taking a step back: “I’m in a position where I can say I’m leaving so easily. I hope that the sale doesn’t work out, and if it does, I hope that the people who remain put pressure on EA to hold the level of inclusiveness that The Sims has always been about.”
What distinguishes this movement is its calculated sacrifice. These creators recognize that their early access content drives marketing momentum for EA, making their departure a genuine leverage point. James Turner, who has built nearly two decades around Sims content, announced plans to pivot toward alternatives like Paralives, effectively fragmenting EA’s creator ecosystem just as the company faces a leadership transition.
The firm answered back in measured tones, asserting that The Sims “will always be a space where you can express your authentic self”- an implicit concession to community concerns. But the contradiction is telling: EA made the announcement at the same time that it announced a partnership with Stability AI to integrate generative artificial intelligence into game development, and questioned future creative direction.
