Codenamed ‘Pitt’ Pearl is the eighth addition to the Valorant map pool. To be launched with Episode V ACT I, Pearl would replace Split in the Active map pool in Valorant. Riot released the early Beta, where the content creators were able to play the map and test it out with the New Skin Bundle ‘Prelude of Chaos’.
The map is set in Lisbon, Portugal, underwater on Omega Earth, where the Pearl is the kingdom’s answer to climate change. The map also includes a lot of Portuguese art from Lisbon and tries to mimic the city. The map is “A nice visual juxtaposition of Kingdom Industries structures with older structures of Portugal.”
Gameplay-wise, the map follows a classic, three-lane design, similar to all the older maps, somewhat reminiscing CSGO maps like Dust II, Inferno, etc., where the map can be easily divided into three parts, A, B, and Mid. Unlike the previous Valorant maps, Pearl is more traditional than its predecessors, without teleporters, doors, or ziplines. The map, though, while playing, is as complicated as any other map, if not more, With the map developers calling it “deceptively simple.”
The map provides extensive map control to the Defenders, with defenders almost covering 65% of the map while the attackers have to actively contest for map control. The importance of coordinated attacking is heavily emphasized on the map, especially if the defenders are holding passively. The attackers would have to work together to flush out the defenders, win the duels and then control the area before making any progress towards the site.
The map heavily promotes a slow and strategic approach to the game. With the number of angles to cover and clear, rushing to sites would be heavily frowned upon. Using multiple controllers would be a meta on the map, especially Omen and Astra, who have rechargeable smokes.
The map can easily be divided into two halves, and the ‘MID PLAZA’ serves as the divider for the map. Both sites have two entry points, one through mid and the other through individual site mains. Flanking would also play a massive role in the map design, and it’d make or break the round.
Raze would play a critical role on the map, with her utility helping to flush out defenders. Sova, won’t be as effective as the map has closed angles, and players can easily hide from the recon darts. The roles of the initiators would be crucial, especially on the attack, as they’d be crucial in clearing out angles and taking map control. Duelists like Jett, Reyna, Yoru, and Neon won’t be as effective. On the other hand, Phoenix can make a comeback on the map.
With the elongated mains on both the sites, Mid and B tower, Chamber’s operator would still be an essential part of the agent composition. Being as simplistic as it is, the map still is very intricate and would heavily rely on strategic takes and team play, and the winner of the game would depend on which team plays better with each other.
One good critic of the map is that it relies heavily on team play and might face backlash from Casuals. But the map would be one of the most exciting maps to watch in pro play. The map would debut in the LCQ, where teams with the strategic approach would choose to play Pearl to balance out the map pool.
The map sure is an exciting step forward. With valorant’s future in sight, the map is a clear indicator of how developers want the game to be played, and it is an exciting way, to say the least. Pearl would have its separate queue for the first two weeks post, which would be part of the regular map rotation.
Indian esports trailblazer, FanClash, has raised $40 million Series B funding to fuel its mission to build a global esports fantasy, data and fan engagement platform.
This succeeds a Series A round of $10 million from Sequoia Capital India, Falcon Edge (Alpha Wave Ventures) and Info Edge India in August 2021. Existing investors along with Matic Networks (Polygon) co-led the latest fund raise.
“The company plans to use the funds raised for global expansion, building the team and user acquisition. FanClash released its product in India in 2021 and in the Philippines in June 2022 and aims to launch in Vietnam and the USA by early 2023”, said a spokesperson from the company.
Founded in mid-2020, FanClash started its journey as a fantasy gaming application for all core esports viewers and has evolved into Asia’s largest esports fantasy platform with operations in India and the Philippines.
There are 500 million core esports viewers globally, growing at 20% CAGR. In India, this number stands at 100 million and is expected to grow threefold by 2025. FanClash provides a forum for the fans to not just enjoy the game as a viewer, but also empowers them to monetize their knowledge of esports. Users can create their fantasy teams from every tournament and earn rewards based on the real-life performance of the teams.
This is like monetizing the knowledge of cricket or football via other fantasy platforms. While fantasy gaming has seen tremendous success in traditional sports such as cricket, electronic sports had no such channel available until FanCLash. The platform enables users to play fantasy on all leading global tournaments across top esports such as FreeFire, PUBG Mobile, COD Mobile, COD PC, Valorant, CS:GO, League of Legends, DOTA 2 etc.
“Esports fans around the world spend about 8-10 hours a week watching tournaments and gameplay, yet there are not enough avenues for players and viewers to monetize their knowledge in any way. Our customers love FanClash not only because it gives them the opportunity to compete in fantasy games, but also for making them financially independent and hence taken seriously as esports fans. The industry has corroborated this by the stellar adoption of FanClash in the last 12 months.” said Rishabh Bhansali, co-founder of FanClash.
“We aspire to be a household name in the global gaming community. This is possible in esports, unlike traditional sports, because the underlying game titles have a global audience. At a broader level, our vision is to make the Indian startup ecosystem proud by creating ‘a global digital product from India, for the world’ and we believe we have the right ingredients to become world leaders” said Richa Singh, Co-founder of FanClash.
“Online gaming has over 300 million users in India and esports has hit an inflection point with over 100 million Indian viewers. The online gaming market is also monetising well and is on track to surpass $5 billion in revenues by 2025. Going after this opportunity, FanClash is building an exciting new destination for esports fans with an incredible product that is loved by its users. We are inspired by their mission to revolutionise the esports industry, and Sequoia Capital India is excited to partner with the FanClash team.” said Rajan Anandan, MD, Sequoia India.
“Esports have proven to be the next step in the evolution of the gaming industry. This is a global market which still has massive unsolved problems around fantasy as well as fan engagement. Using data as a moat, we were very impressed with the way FanClash has built out its gaming platform for global markets.
The company has also shown its execution strength across all international markets, while maintaining high capital efficiency – reflected in the industry leading metrics like LTV/CAC. We are privileged to partner with the team and are looking forward to help build out a global Esports platform” said Anirudh Singh, MD, Alpha Wave Global.
“We are fortunate to be partners with the Fanclash team since their ideation days. The team is even more special for us since Richa is a returning founder whom we backed for a second time. The execution since Day 1 has been phenomenal with Fanclash becoming a category leader within two years of inception.
They have been extremely capital efficient and are seeing strong user love which reflects in the superior engagement and retention of users on the platform. Esports is a large and growing market globally and Fanclash with its global ambitions is well positioned to become the global leader in esports fantasy.”, said Kitty Agarwal, Partner, Info Edge Venture Fund.
The founding team is from IIT Kharagpur and IIM Ahmedabad and has been VC-backed entrepreneurs in the past. Across functions, the team comprises of top talent from premier institutes (IITs and IIMs) and leading tech companies and startups such as Amazon, Samsung, Zomato, PayTm. This high caliber, customer-obsessed team, which is building in the exploding esports industry, aims to make FanClash a global leader.

Fnatic have signed Ludvig “HEAP” Alonso to their active CS:GO division on trial from Dignitas, the London-based organization announced today on their Twitter handle.
Before adding HEAP on loan from Dignitas, Patrik “f0rest” Lindberg served as a stand-in for fnatic at the PINNACLE CUP Championship due to the former falling sick right before the tournament as addressed by the team’s CGO and co-owner, Patrik “cArn” Sättermon.
HEAP will be the fifth and the final piece to the puzzle of fnatic’s rebuild after their decision to revamp their roster was triggered by middling performances of their previous iteration led by Alex “ALEX” McMeekin and company which saw the latter alongside Valentin “poizon” Vasilev move to the bench.
HEAP joins fresh signings Nico “nicoodoz” Tamjidi and Fredrik “roeJ” Jørgensen on fnatic’s main roster and will debut at the REPUBLEAGUE Season 3 where they will lock horns with Into the Breach in their Opener on June 21.
HEAP played under the banner of Dignitas before the North American organization allowed their players to explore their future plans but later pulled out from the game.
Once again the Indian esports ecosystem is under the radar for player poaching and harassment. TSM India, the regional division of world-famous Team SoloMid has accused Godlike Esports of player poaching and unprofessional behavior towards the player transfer.
While on the other hand, Arjun “SHADOW” Mandhalkar has accused TSM India of harassment and exploitation. No response has been given by Godlike Esports whereas Jeff “SuiJeneris” Chau, Director Mobile of TSM India, and Nizhum “Armin” Karmakar, TSM India Lead have been openly responding to the player poaching.
Armin wrote on his Instagram profile, “To be very clear, we talked to Shadow and gave him permission to explore options with the expectation that orgs interested in Shadow will connect with TSM. We have communicated to Shadow and Godlike that we will loan him out for free to start at this upcoming LAN event. This has been communicated for weeks but this organization does not want to do a proper loan and/or transfer agreement as any professional organization would.”
He further added, “So far we have received no communication from any organization wanting Shadow, yet he has been registered under another team for the upcoming Nodwin tournament. Player poaching and tampering are a large issue in Indian esports. TSM will ensure that business is done professionally.”
On the contrary, Arjun “Shadow” Mandhalkar accused the organization of exploiting, harassing, and threatening him. He wrote, “My position in the BGMI community, is due to all of you, who followed and supported me in my game and its strategies. Because of your inspiration, I have dedicated 100% of my mind, body, and spirit to esports and am nothing without you all. Today I am before you to inform you that I have now decided to be a fighter in real life as well, by quitting toxic relationships with certain companies/organizations, formed with the intent to exploit esports players and fanbase.”
“I have decided to challenge the boundaries, which are based on exploitation, harassment, and threat as I don’t want to set a bad example for you all by being exploited, harassed, and insulted. I need your support as this is the biggest battle of my life. I am David in front of Goliath and do not have any support except you all. Love you all. See you soon in the new Avatar. God bless.”
TSM India responded to this accusation by stating, “It’s unfortunate that a player is choosing to make false claims because he’s disappointed he got benched. We have and remain ready to loan him out to another organization and encourage any interested organizations to reach out to us through the normal league process. As is standard practice in our industry and organization need only to reach out to TSM.”
They further wrote, “This has been communicated to Shadow for weeks. The current situation exists only because other organizations do not wish to do a loan and/or transfer agreement as a professional organization would. Instead, they have chosen to instigate drama in an attempt to coerce TSM or another organization to let the player go for free. This is incredibly unprofessional.”
