Modern Warfare 4 2XP tokens will now count down only during matches. Call of Duty announced the change on September 28, 2026, through its official X account. Timers will no longer run while players sit in lobbies or menus. Tokens earned in earlier Call of Duty games will also carry over. Modern Warfare 4 launches on October 23, 2026.

Modern Warfare 4 2XP Tokens: How the New Timer Works
Call of Duty confirmed that tokens will count down in game time. The same post said existing tokens will be usable starting in Modern Warfare 4.
In practice, a 2XP token now runs only while a match is live. A 1-hour token counts 60 minutes of match play. Time spent in lobbies, menus, loadout screens, and queues no longer reduces it.
A 30-minute token starts when a match begins. If the match ends before the 30 minutes are up, the timer pauses. It picks up again in the next match.
This means the bonus time of a token now matches the time a player spends in matches.
How Double XP Tokens Worked Before
In earlier Call of Duty games, the timer started the moment a player activated a token. It kept running in lobbies, during loadout changes, and while waiting in queue. Players often ended up with only a short amount of real match time.
Internet problems or leaving the game for a few minutes also used up token time. Players usually earn 2XP tokens by completing challenges across Call of Duty game modes. Battle Passes also include them.

Black Ops 7 Tokens Carry Over to Modern Warfare 4
Infinity Ward confirmed that tokens earned in previous Call of Duty titles will carry over. They remain usable in Modern Warfare 4.
Players who own Black Ops 7 tokens do not need to spend them before buying the new game. The tokens will work under the new timer rules.
Other Modern Warfare 4 Quality-of-Life Changes
The token update is not the first player-requested change from the developer. Last week, Infinity Ward added a toggle that lets players turn off certain operator skins in Warzone and Modern Warfare 4.
Before that, the studio added shader preload support to the Modern Warfare 4 beta. It also removed the restart prompt in the game.
Modern Warfare 4 Release Date and Platforms
Modern Warfare 4 launches on October 23, 2026. It is scheduled for Windows, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 2. The single-player campaign unlocks a week earlier for players who preorder.
The open beta has ended. The next chance to play multiplayer is at launch, which is when the new token rules take effect.
