VCT LOCK/IN Sao Paulo: Format, Schedule and Details

Riot Games announced today the official tournament details for LOCK//IN, the largest event in the history of the VALORANT Champions Tour. From February 13th to March 4th, 32 of the best teams in the world will battle it out at the Ginásio do Ibirapuera in São Paulo for three weeks of intense competition.

LOCK//IN will see every team from the Americas, Pacific, EMEA leagues as well as two invited representatives from China.

VCT LOCK/IN Sao Paulo: Format

To accommodate the largest number of teams Riot Games has hosted at a single event, the tournament will use a single elimination format. Subsequent events will return to a double elimination format.

To maximize the number of inter-regional matches at LOCK//IN, a random draw process was implemented that paired teams from different regions in the first round, while also maximizing the possibility of inter-regional matches for the second round. 

First, regions were paired into 16 first round match-ups, with each match-up consisting of two team slots. 

  • EMEA vs PACIFIC – 5 match-ups
  • AMERICAS vs PACIFIC – 5 match-ups
  • AMERICAS vs EMEA – 4 match-ups
  • CHINA vs AMERICAS – 1 match-up
  • CHINA vs EMEA – 1 match-up

Each team slot was assigned a random number from 1-10 to account for the 32 teams in attendance. (Americas 1-10, EMEA 1-10, PACIFIC 1-10, China 1-2). In line with our goal to maximize geographically diverse competition, teams from China were paired with team slots from the AMERICAS and EMEA.

Second, the 16 match-ups were distributed across two sides of the single elimination bracket to maximize inter-regional matches for the first two rounds. For this event, the two sides of the bracket will be referenced as Alpha & Omega:

LOCK//IN will consist of three stages of competition:

  • Alpha Matches – February 13 -19
    • Alpha Matches will play out until two teams remain.
    • Each match will be a Best-of-Three.
  • Omega Matches – February 22 – 27
    • Omega Matches will play out until two teams remain.
    • Each match will be a Best-of-Three.
  • Finals Stage
    • The remaining four teams play through the Semifinals and Finals until a champion is crowned.
    • Matches in this stage will be Best-of-Five.

Electronic Arts is including a free copy of Dead Space 2 for PC players of the upcoming remake of the 2009 game Dead Space as an incentive to purchase the remaster. The month of January is chilly, dark, and a continuation of the renaissance of space alien terror from the PS3 and Xbox 360 eras.

Microsoft announced plans to lay off about 10,000 workers amid a wave of job cuts in the technology sector.

CEO Satya Nadella informed employees of the planned layoffs in an internal note, and stated that the layoffs, which are expected to affect less than 5% of Microsoft’s total employee base, are part of the company’s efforts to “align [its] cost structure” with its revenue and areas of customer demand.

“First, as we saw customers accelerate their digital spend during the pandemic, we’re now seeing them optimize their digital spend to do more with less,” Nadella said in the note to employees. “We’re also seeing organizations in every industry and geography exercise caution as some parts of the world are in a recession and other parts are anticipating one.” 

The layoffs were largely expected as reports had surfaced of Microsoft preparing to make cuts.

Microsoft joins other technology companies that have made recent moves to trim staff due to pandemic-fueled hiring sprees and subsequent concerns about whether inflated employee counts align with the current economic reality.

Nadella noted in his communications that Microsoft is “eliminating roles in some areas” but will “continue to hire in key strategic areas.” The company disclosed in a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission that it was also making changes to its hardware portfolio and consolidating leases “to create higher density across our workspaces.”

Microsoft expects to take a $1.2 billion charge related to these actions in its fiscal second quarter and anticipates that the charge will result in a 12-cent negative impact to earnings per share.

Other large technology companies like Meta Platforms, Amazon, and Intel have also announced layoffs in recent months, as well as smaller companies such as Shopify, Peloton Interactive, and Coinbase Global.

Sony said that PS5 sales were going according to plan and that it believed it could still achieve its 18 million sales target. The company manufactured 6.5 million consoles during Q2.
