Amazon Shuts Down Ad-Supported Streaming Service Freevee

0

Freevee, a free, ad-supported video streaming service that was first introduced by Amazon over five years ago under the IMDb name, is being shut down officially. Over the next weeks, Freevee will gradually be absorbed into Amazon Prime Video.

Freevee began as IMDb Freedive in 2019 which became IMDb TV which was eventually turned into Freevee again in 2022. It became rather well-known for more reasons than only offering free access to a variety of Prime Video series however it did not last long.

The AD-based model did not come across popular shows and eventually failed to retain the audience and as a result, its profitability came into question and Amazon finally dissolved it.

Amazon Freevee Shutdown

“We have built Prime Video into a first-stop entertainment destination where customers can personalize their viewing experience by streaming exclusive Prime member entertainment produced by Amazon MGM Studios, licensed movies, and series, content from other services as an add-on subscription, live sports, blockbuster movies and series to rent or buy, FAST Channels and the complete Amazon Freevee content offering.” read their statement.

Fast forward to 2024, Amazon was questioned for introducing ADs in Prime Video which is already a paid service. This sparked speculations that Freevee might bite the dust and finally, that day has come.

CS2 Update Fixes Lag Compensation in Latest Update

In the past few updates, Valve has been releasing update after update focusing on improving all the network issues that have been plaguing CS2 for a while. The latest update will make the smoother along with addressing the lag compensation that will make the game more fair in terms of gun fights.

The telemetry hud that conveys certain information to players will also be refreshed and will showcase more information that will help track down network-centric problems which will eventually help improve the experience.

Patch Notes are as follows:

[ NETWORK ]

  • Fixed a case mid-spray where lag compensation wasn’t aware of the user’s “Buffering to smooth over packet loss/jitter” setting.
  • Improved clock synchronization to better handle downstream jitter bursts.

[ TELEMETRY HUD ]

  • Changed the method for measuring network quality to measure how much network is negatively impacting gameplay. It now measures how often a tick is missed due to network loss or jitter.
  • Added detailed network quality display option, which can be used to display the raw packet loss and jitter numbers.
  • For more details see this article.

[ ABOUT THE NETWORK QUALITY READOUT ]
Prior to the Armory Update, the network quality readout in the telemetry HUD considered packets to be “bad” under two circumstances. 1.) If the packet was dropped. 2.) If the packet was delivered out-of-order and was not corrected at a relatively low layer in the network stack. This was not a useful metric for two reasons. First, it counted some misdelivery events as “bad” even though they did not negatively impact gameplay. This was especially a problem for packet reordering. Second, it was not counting as “bad” packets that arrived late due to network jitter and

did negatively impact gameplay. After debugging many instances of gameplay hitches with players, we determined that jitter was causing problems for many players, who believed (quite reasonably) that their network was working perfectly, since there was no packet loss.

In an attempt to let these players know that jitter might be the cause of the hitches, we changed the measurement method in the Armory Update on October 2, 2024. Now, we counted a message as “bad” if it was lost, if packets arrived out of order in a way that could not be corrected, or if the packets experienced jitter above a threshold. For players on a network connection with significant jitter, suddenly the network quality indicator became significantly worse. Many players assumed that this meant that something had changed to introduce packet loss.

Unfortunately, this method of measuring quality was also flawed. The Source 2 Engine automatically adds buffering to smooth over jitter. For many players, these automatic adjustments are enough, and the indicator was counting jittered packets as “bad” even when there was not negative impact on gameplay.

Today’s update changes the network quality readout to only measure network events that are negatively impacting gameplay. See the FAQ for more details.

Fortnite First-Person Mode Coming in December

0

In December, Fortnite will bring the long-awaited first-person camera mode. But this is not going full-scale first-person experience that fans have been craving.

Historically, Fortnite has been a game that boasted a third-person perspective and Epic Games refused all but the most obstinate of fans’ requests for it. Yes, players were permitted to change the angles of the cameras within the game settings, but true first-person mode has always been the missing link.

On the Fortnite Creator Portal, Epic Games has published a blog where it introduced its new First-Person Camera Mode device. Starting from December 11, creators will be able to incorporate this device into their Creative mode experiences, giving players a first-person perspective on custom-built islands.

It is worth noting that such a feature is exclusive to Fortnite Creative and will never make its way into the core Battle Royale or Zero Build. Meanwhile, Fortnite Chapter 6 arrives in December, so those wanting the old first-person Battle Royale experience must wait a bit longer.

For now, Epic Games is focusing on the creators of islands and UEFN users. Creators can submit their islands to the portal for content review starting from December 11 if they want access to the first-person mode.

The first-person mode is currently in beta and somewhat restricted. Most ranged weapons are playable in first-person mode, but dual-wielding will turn back to third-person.

Valorant Devs Confirm Neon Nerf in Patch 9.11

0

Riot Games has officially announced a critical adjustment to Neon, Valorant’s electrifying speedster agent, in the upcoming Patch 9.11. The nerf aims to address concerns from the player community regarding her overpowering gameplay dynamics while maintaining her unique movement-combat identity.

Neon has been a hot topic in the Valorant community since receiving buffs in Patch 8.11, particularly around her slide mechanics. These adjustments increased her slide accuracy, resulting in complaints about the agent being too dominant in matches. In response, a Valorant game designer, known on social media as PenguinVALORANT, confirmed that Riot Games acknowledges these concerns.

“For what it’s worth—we agree that Neon is too strong as well. We’re working on some adjustments to balance out the parts that feel overpowered while maintaining her grounded movement combat fantasy. These changes are coming in Patch 9.11,” stated the developer in an official post on X (formerly Twitter).

Why Neon’s Nerfs Are Necessary

neon valorant

The buffs introduced earlier this year enhanced Neon’s agility, making her slide highly precise. While players appreciated her increased fluidity, the unintended mid-air accuracy of her shots initially caused outrage. Despite a rollback on the mid-air accuracy tweak, her slide accuracy remained untouched, leading many players to argue that it disrupted competitive balance.

Community discussions have proposed a reduction in slide accuracy as a potential solution. Notably, players do not consider her core abilities as problematic, leaving the focus solely on refining her movement-based skillset. These changes aim to ensure a fairer gameplay experience without detracting from Neon’s electrifying appeal.

Upcoming Changes

Neon is not the only agent under the radar. Alongside the nerf, Riot Games has hinted at possible buffs for underperforming agents such as Deadlock and Harbor. Both characters have struggled to find their footing in competitive play, and Patch 9.11 could mark a turning point for their viability.

The adjustments in Patch 9.11 demonstrate Riot Games’ ongoing commitment to maintaining a balanced and engaging gaming environment. By actively listening to player feedback, the developers continue to evolve Valorant into a fair yet dynamic competitive experience. These updates not only reflect the community’s needs but also highlight Riot’s dedication to its player base.

COD Black Ops 6 and Warzone Season 1 Update Size Revealed

0

The gaming world is about to get a big update as Activision is soon to launch Season 1 for Call of Duty Black Ops 6 and its integrated Warzone.

Bound to come with tons of new content, this update is also the biggest yet, with the download size reportedly coming in at approximately 90 GB on the PlayStation console. Similar large file sizes are expected for PCs and Xbox units, which means bigger modifications or changes are at stake in being witnessed.

Key Features and Improvements

  • Multiplayer and Warzone Extended
The patch introduces several new maps for multiplayer and Battle Royale. Of course, these integrations will bring movement and Black Ops 6-specific armaments to the forefront of Warzone, all while ensuring cohesion in development for veterans and newbies alike.
  • Reworked Zombies Mode
Zombie enthusiasts will have new maps to play on, updated load-outs, and better gameplay mechanics. This renewal is purposed to increase player participation and widen the scope of tactical maneuvers in the highly popular mode.
  • Return of Prop Hunt
Prop Hunt mode returns this time with a new mode called Ransack. Together, both of these are going to expand the variety of gameplay styles one is accustomed to, which fit almost all tastes on the menu board.
  • Seasonal Rewards and Balance Updates
These will include rewards that are exclusive to the battle pass, such as the 12 Gauge Dragon’s Breath, which unlocks at Rank 7. Beyond these rewards, the update includes key balance adjustments, buffs, and nerfs that should go a long way in fine-tuning competitive play.

Update Size Breakdown

COD Black Ops 6

The update size of Season 1 is grand in scale but substantiated by its major content additions:

  • Core Black Ops 6 Updates: 35GB
  • Warzone Integration: >10GB

Additional Changes and Fixes: The remaining storage occupied by a myriad of small adjustments helps to maintain stability and further improves the user’s experience.

In order to alleviate storage pressures, players on storage-constrained platforms will be able to select which content they download, and this will allow them to exclude Warzone content.

Release Schedule

Season 1 of Black Ops 6 launches on November 14, 2024. Days to go, and here it is time for some storage cleaning and preparation for what’s new to come. The update symbolizes Activision’s commitment to the delivery of nostalgia-laden elements, mix-matched with fresh updates to keep the franchise young and alive.

Other reasons are that this new season update for Call of Duty Black Ops 6 and Warzone is not only enriching gameplay but also a promise to in-game progression and the evolution of gaming as a whole from Activision. Touting sprawling features nods to classic entries, and technical overhauls, Season 1 is shaping up to set a new bar for first-person shooters.

Americas RMR Round Three Matches Decided: Key Matchups and Schedule

The Americas RMR at the Perfect World Shanghai Major 2024 heats up as the tournament reaches its decisive phase. This November 13, eight pivotal matches will take center stage, as some teams clinch their spot in the Major and others get eliminated.

The action-packed day opens with high-stakes BO1s from the 1-1 pool, where FURIA will square off against BOSS at 04:00 CST, and Legacy takes on M80 in the day’s first round. Some of these matches decide who will move further forward and who eventually drops into the lower bracket of this steep competition.

At 05:00 CST, things will get hot with the second set of BO1 matches: Team Liquid vs. BESTIA and paiN Gaming vs. Imperial. This set of matches will mean a lot for teams that want to be noticed as strong contenders in this tournament.

As the day wears on, things only get hotter at 06:00 CST in BO3 showdowns. That is when Wildcard and 9z square it out for the valuable Major spot in a match that promises to keep audiences on tenterhooks, as neither of these teams wants to give any quarter. KRÜ battles it out elsewhere with Nouns in another life-and-death struggle, where the losers get knocked out.

The last series of BO3s, which were to start at 09:00 CST, would determine the future of both Complexity and MIBR since the winner would advance directly to the Major. RED Canids would also be fighting Case in the 0-2 pool, with both sides still hoping to salvage their tournament hopes.

The stakes cannot get any higher than they are now as the Americas RMR approaches its climax. All the teams will be showing their incredible skill and strategic depth, and with every team being even, it will surely be a day full of thrilling Counter-Strike action. The result will determine the significant qualifiers and set the tone for the Shanghai grand event.

Soon, all eyes will be on spectacular performances and defining moments for champions. Stay tuned for further updates as the road to the Perfect World Shanghai Major 2024 rolls onward.

MongolZ, Rare Atom Secure Spots for PW Shanghai Major 2024

0

The road to the PW Shanghai Major 2024 has just been as exciting as many could have fathomed, as Day Two of both Asia and Americas Regional Major Rankings comes to an end. Already, two powerhouses have punched their tickets to one of CS2’s majors, namely The MongolZ and Rare Atom. Surprises and stand-out performances on the move day in and out shape the narrative going into this highly-anticipated Major.

The MongolZ entered the Asia RMR as crystal clear favorites and never left that image. After briefly stumbling by dropping a map against DRILLAS, the team locked in its third straight Major appearance with victories over Alter Ego and DRILLAS to cement their place as one of the forces to be taken seriously in the Asian CS2 scene.

Amongst those who have made the cut, the qualification of Rare Atom is a really heartwarming story in this tournament. Sailing through the relatively smooth path against GR and TALON, the team ensured a place in the Major which is hosted in their home country. It will be a return to major competition after five years for the veteran player kaze, adding an emotional dimension to the journey of Rare Atom.

Americas RMR: Liquid and FURIA Suffer Early Hiccups

Shanghai 2024 Counter-Strike 2 Major

In the Americas RMR, the favorites Liquid and FURIA are in the 1:1 bracket-a sure sign of a rough start. Liquid managed to recover from their stunning opening loss to Wildcard with a convincing 13:2 victory against KRÜ but are still questioned over their consistency. FURIA also recovered from an overtime loss to Legacy with a convincing win against Case and kept their hopes for the Major alive.

Wildcard’s Cinderella story is one of the main talking points from the Americas RMR. Supported by streamer Amouranth, and with players like Sonic and stanislaw in their ranks, the team first upset Liquid in a thrilling overtime battle, then dispatched paiN Gaming as well. Now in the 2:0 bracket, Wildcard finds themselves just one win away from attending their first Major ever, but they have 9z to contend with.
DRILLAS Keep the Dream Alive in Asia RMR

Streamer without Pixel’s team DRILLAS also remains in contention as they have had surprisingly good performances so far. After edging past Lynn Vision and putting up a spirited fight against The MongolZ, DRILLAS is now set to face FlyQuest in the Lower Bracket. The Australian squad is a formidable opponent, but a win could position DRILLAS for a Cinderella qualification story.

The risk moves forward as the RMRs do. All eyes are on the favorites, who have to prove themselves, while the underdogs, such as Wildcard and DRILLAS, fight for their lives. The number of rounds remaining is small, so one may expect heavy battles in some historical upsets during the next few days.

The PW Shanghai Major 2024 RMRs have already provided a slew of gripping storylines from The MongolZ and Rare Atom’s solid qualifications to the turbulent journeys of Liquid and FURIA. As the competition intensifies, the race to claim a spot in one of the year’s biggest CS2 events is wide open, promising more surprises and unforgettable moments.

Ubisoft Hit with Class-Action Lawsuit by Players

0

Ubisoft, one of the larger game developers in the industry, finds itself in a legal storm in the wake of server shutdowns for the game The Crew this March 2024. Two disgruntled fans have taken to the courts in a class-action lawsuit against the company for what is claimed to be an effective destruction of the game and refusal of access to paid content.

The Crew was an always-online racing game when it launched in 2014, designed to take on the likes of Forza Horizon. It required active servers to play the game, however, which means it’s now unplayable since those servers were switched off. That decision “completely destroyed” the product for consumers who otherwise would have access to a game they had bought, according to the plaintiffs.

Filings range from allegations of misrepresenting to customers the sale of what amounted to a limited license, rather than an actual game in tangible form. They declare this misrepresentation renders players helpless should the servers be shut down. More importantly, the suit reproaches Ubisoft for not offering an offline single-player mode that would at least let users play part of the game after the support for the servers went dark.

Ubisoft Sued for Shutting Down Crew Servers

It’s a case that points to critical issues in the gaming world, especially with digital ownership and the preservation of online games. The industry of video gaming has increasingly moved to a live-service model reliant on access to servers. On the other hand, server shutdowns expose the intrinsic dangers for consumers by something considered to blur the lines between ownership and licensing.

Ubisoft declined to comment publicly on the lawsuit, but the incident underlines how developers are struggling to balance the dual demands of live-service models and customer demand. Curiously, The Crew 2-its sequel-released in 2018, also has an offline single-player capability, which ensures that players will be able to access the core content, regardless of server status.

The suit, with its potential to set a precedent for consumer rights in digital gaming, will be closely followed by the gaming community. But however the eventual outcome may be, the case puts the onus on the industries for more transparency and longevity in gaming services. That means companies need to rethink how they design digital game lifetimes to maintain trust and prevent other similar lawsuits.

In many ways, this takedown of The Crew servers makes for a watershed moment: the industry is on notice where game preservation and customer contract provisions in these new-fledged live-service games are concerned.
